cruzky Posted February 26, 2009 #1 Share Posted February 26, 2009 Where would be the best place to walk on a glacier? Juneau ice fields, Mendenhall, McKinley or at Denali? Thanks, Roseanna
anchorage1977 Posted February 26, 2009 #2 Share Posted February 26, 2009 For helicopter, the glaciers of the Juneau Icefield, including but not limited to Mendenhall Glacier. For fixed wing flightseeing (which is cheaper) Talkeetna offers great options into Denali National Park. Seeing the mountain from the air is spectacular for sure. Budget Queen Posted February 26, 2009 #3 Share Posted February 26, 2009 For actual ice walking, you need to look at a glacier helicopter landing out of either Juneau or Skagway. It makes NO difference what glacier you land on in my opinion, having done this 6 times. Glaciers are in a constant state of change, and Mendenhall is no better/worse than any other, just more known. I haven't done a helicopter flight out of the Denali Park area, but you are only going to get snow with a ski plane landing and may not even have time to walk to some ice. So not a good choice if ice is your priority.
