Cagney's Steakhouse- What are your honest opinions?

I ate in Cagney's on the NCL Gem last year. Unfortunately, we were a littled disappointed. The appetizers, dessert, ambiance and service were excellent. The disappointment came from the steak itself as I didn't think it was up to par with a filet mignon at Outback. My boyfriend described his steak as "livery".

So I was talking about my upcoming trip to Bermuda on the Dawn and we were thinking about trying Cagney's again. I'm curious if we just had a not so great cut of meat that night, or if Cagney's is overrated. What was your experience there?

We ate one night At Cagney's on the Star and had basically your exact experience the place was nice the service okay, not outstanding but decent but the meat itself was not good at all, it was tough, had grissle running through it on one area etc.

I know some people rave about it our experience was not that hot.

Here we go again, food is just too subjective to have any answer the right one. Hubby love Cagney's, I have clients that just got back from the Jade, loved Cagney's, I am partial to Le Bistro. My cousin got a ribeye at Cagney's that was almsot all fat, yes, ribeyes are fat, but hers was really awful..Now, does Outback have a better cut of meat? Genearlly I would say, taking everything into consideration Cagney's is better. Remember it is the ambiance as well as the actual quality of the meat..

This is my opinion and I will stick to it. LOL

Nita

now reading all the above opinions you see why I say, there is just no real answer.

I've only had dinner there once, this past February on the Dawn. I'd say my thoughts are mixed... the room was very crowded, and I was disappointed in the filet and lobster. The creme brulee was wonderful! The service was good. I might go there again just to eat the coffee kaluah creme brulee!

From my review Dawn Review Jan. 31st, the Suite Life - Cruise Critic Message Boards:

Our dinner this evening was at Cagny’s. It was somewhat disappointing. The service was excellent, our waiter repeatedly checked on us and asked if there was anything he could do to make our dinner more enjoyable. The Maitre d’hotel, Humberto was his name I believe, was also very personable and provided excellent service. Cagny’s is just crowded and somewhat noisy... too many tables jammed into a tiny space, with an open kitchen area. The food was what was most disappointing, at least for me. Had it been exceptional, I’m sure I would not have minded the crowded space. Two of us ordered the surf and turf, which carried an additional fee of $10 to the cover charge, making our dinner $30 per person. The filet was only about an inch thick and the lobster, which was cooked nicely and looked nice, had no flavor. Maybe I am spoiled having an abundance of fresh lobster in Florida, I’m not sure, but it was very disappointing. I have heard others say the filet is wonderful, so maybe you would be better off to order a filet and not the surf and turf. I ordered the lobster bisque and found it to be good. Cagny’s did add an item to the all time favorite dish... the kahluah coffee creme brulee. It was wonderful! Not too sweet at all, just perfect! Our waiter also did an amazing job at preparing the Bananas Foster. It was exceptional.

Maybe the steer was having a bad day when it went to the butchers!!:D

I have had great steaks in Cagneys and great service, I have also had a poor steak and when the restaurant manager came round to make sure everything was OK he saw it and immediately ordered a replacement and also would not charge me for the meal.

I have also had less than great service, but generally it was OK.

If ever I have had a problem the restaurant manager has put it right and has gone above and beyond what he/she had to do to put it right.

So I have every confidence in eating in Cagneys.

It may also depend on whether you understand the "system" and the NCL way of doing things and of getting them put right. After quite a few NCL cruises I have at least a slight understanding of that.

And the early/late bird specials - if they are on at all - are great.

My one gripe with Cagneys - and its a head office problem - was that on our last cruise there was no proper Maine lobster in the shell like they used to have. It was the same in Le Bistro. This may have been a temporary change, I don't know.

I have to admit that when we went to Cagney's on the Gem it was not on par with Cagney's on the Dawn or Spirit. I found them to be superior.

On the Gem the lamb chops tasted par boiled, my dh's steak was of very low quality and the taste wasn't as good as you get in the main dining rooms. We were disappointed.

The waiter in Cagney's on the Gem not knowing we had dined in Cagney's before on other ships kept trying to steer us to lower quality of choices than what we really wanted. So on our 2nd cruise on the Gem we didn't even attempt to try Cagney's again. Next Feb. we will and will voice our dislikes if we find they are still the same.

Cagneys on the Dawn was so fantastic we went back a second time. The molten chocolate cake was one of the best desserts I've had anywhere!

I know many who don't care about dessert at a steakhouse but really---yum yum yum!

The service was great both times.

We're just off the Pearl on Sunday. Ate at Cagney's two nights. The first was tremendous. The shrimp cocktail was ok...they had been out of the refrigerator and sitting on the serving counter so they weren't really cold. My husband's and my rib roasts were out of this world. Our friends had the filet of beef. Both said they were good. All in all, we were impressed.

On our second visit, it was different. Service was slow and the food, when it finally came, was bordering on cold. Our waiter was very concerned, said the kitchen wasn't working well that night and comped one dessert. Needless to say, we were sorry we returned.

Here is a tip. One of you order the Lobster (gets TWO tails) and one of you order the large filet (no upcharge) and then split it. Two surf&Turfs and only one upcharge.

We used to get a tasty proper Maine style lobster in the shell in Cagneys, all the accoutrements, bib, clawcrackers, picks etc.

Last time - not on the menu.

Is it back? Or permanently gone? Anyone know?

Strangely the best ribeye steak we had on Jewel last time was in the Italian restaurant, they didn't use to have it on their menu but since they started charging in there it appeared and was GOOD! Specially for $10.

If you thought everything was great other than the steak..I would definately give it another try. You might have just hit an "off" night. It happens...and it's not like you had to pay a $100 check like you might at a land based steak house.

We ate in Cagney's a few times...some times were excellent and some were just good...it was never awful. And the french fries...were delish!

Hey, just give it another shot...or not...and if not..use the oportunity to try one of the other restaurants.

We had the same experience when my partner ordered a steak our first time at Cagney's. It was really disappointing. We chalked it up to living in Texas and knowing how to grill a steak how we like. I had ordered the Prime Rib, which we don't do at home, and it was wonderful. Since then we have always ordered the Prime Rib and found it to be wonderful. Hope this helps.

Every time I sail on the Dawn, and it has been three times now, I hear from others how much they enjoyed Cagneys. People rave about it, so on our last cruise in January, DH and I decided to give it another try. We had been underwhelmed the first two times, but since we kept hearing from others how good it was, we thought we must have just been there on off nights.

Well, we did try it. Service was great, atmosphere ok. Our table for two was kind of stuck in a corner with my seat facing the wall. Lobster bisque and

the Cagneys fries were outstanding, but the rib eye steak was just ok.

I would go again if we were with others, but prefer LeBistro overall

I have tried Cagneys or the equivalent on the Pearl, Star, Sun, Spirit. I found the Prime Rib to be basic (easily purchased at chain restaurants in California) and the steaks to be average ( again much better at land based steak house )--

the lamb chops I found to be excellent-- have not tried the veal. Lobster is not my favorite on NCL-- I have sent it back 3 of 4 times at speciality restaurants on NCL ships.

Thanks for everyone's respones.. My reason for asking this question was to see if the majority liked or disliked Cagney's as I'm always hearing people talking about how great it is..

If time allows for it on my next cruise on the Dawn, I will try Cagney's again. When I order steak, I always order it with Roquefort cheese on the side to sprinkle on top! MMM I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

It's always been a hit and missed with us, 50% of the time the steaks are under or over cooked and once that happens if it's under cooked they nuke it which makes it tuff. The same for the prime rib.

So we haven't eaten at Cagneys for our last couple of cruises now.

And there are enough restaurants to choose from so we don't miss Cagneys.

Yes, the lamb chops are excellent! Sorry your prime rib wasn't.

The Cagney's on the Spirit was wonderful. In fact, it was the only good meal we had all week long. (The food on this ship was terrible, worst ever!) Definitely go to Cagney's though. We had the lump crab cake for the appetizer and I had the small filet, you could practically cut it with a fork.

Packard89, We are going on the Spirit in April and I wondered if you tried any of the other specialty restaurants? I felt the same way on the Crown Princess last October, the best meal we had was at their Crown Grill. This is our first time to cruise NCL so I've been trying to research where the best places to eat on the Spirit are. Thanks

Last April on the Gem, DH and I were treated to Cagneys by the Casino, I am a big loser:D the ship was rocking and I swear when we sat for dinner there were 30 people by the time our dinner was served we were the only ones there LOL We loved it, maybe because we were the only people in Cagneys:p Anyway DH had surf and turf, he loves food and said it was fantastic, I had filet it was awesome, well anytime I am not doing the cooking, cleaning up, etc... I am happy. We are on the Dawn April 11th E. Carib.and Aug 9th to Bermuda and we are absolutely eating at Cagneys again, it is my fave. pay rest. on the cruise. Our DD's who are 10 and 15 order room service and a movie and it is our date night:D we really look forward to it. Enjoy and have a great trip!!!
