Iris5383 Posted March 8, 2009 #9 Share Posted March 8, 2009 What was the itinerary since you couldn't dock in Kauai? Will you be posting a longer review? I'll be on the same cruise in November, would love to hear what you have to say. Thanks!
DAllenTCY Posted March 8, 2009 #10 Share Posted March 8, 2009 I was told that the reasons for missing Kauai and Ensenada had to do with an "engine problem". Could it be that one of the side thrusters was inoperble? Did you recieve an on board credit for missing those two ports? Thanks. David
Sleepladypalmdesert Posted March 9, 2009 #11 Share Posted March 9, 2009 I can definately see how it could be difficult to get into the Kauai port to dock in either bad weather or with a side thruster not working properly. That is a tricky place to enter for sure. That being said, I would have been disappointed, Kauai was my favorite of all. We missed Ensenada due to being late due to rough seas early on the way back. I didn't care about that one though. But Kauai, would have made me sad. Still.....you can't be mad when it is weather causing rough seas. No way to reign in the wind. Part of cruising. GTVCRUISER Posted March 9, 2009 Author #12 Share Posted March 9, 2009 We got on board credit and Champagne ,I do not think it was a engine problem ,we had some rough seas and had to slow down , we got to Ensenada about 11:30 PM
Iris5383 Posted March 9, 2009 #13 Share Posted March 9, 2009 Was that day just another "at sea", or did you visit another island? Thanks :).
GTVCRUISER Posted March 9, 2009 Author #14 Share Posted March 9, 2009 The Captain waited from 7:00AM until 10:00 AM , the sea was to rough to dock , at that time we cruised the Napali Coast of Kauai .
Iris5383 Posted March 9, 2009 #15 Share Posted March 9, 2009 I have read about the Napali Coast and how beautiful it is. Thanks for the photo. It's a place I'd like to see.
HVLcruiser2 Posted March 9, 2009 #16 Share Posted March 9, 2009 We got on board credit and Champagne ,I do not think it was a engine problem ,we had some rough seas and had to slow down , we got to Ensenada about 11:30 PM Hey There GTV, We are still trying to get our "land legs" not use to that many rough days at sea. I'm wondering what kind of "on board credit" you got for us missing Kauai? (We only got a glass a champagne at dinner.)
GTVCRUISER Posted March 9, 2009 Author #17 Share Posted March 9, 2009 Kauai - $6.25 and glass of Champagne and Ensenada $12.51 and a glass of Champagne , I did not plan on getting off the ship in Ensenada , but I was looking forward to seeing Kauai again. Susie51 Posted March 9, 2009 #18 Share Posted March 9, 2009 When I cruised the Hawaiian Islands, our ship had to skip Kauai because of rough seas also. Our captain took us full speed to Maui and got there in the afternoon. We spent the night and took our catamaran snorkeling tour the next day. Our Kauai shore ex was refunded. Like you, that was the island I really wanted to see. I hope you get back someday. I'm looking forward to more details. I cruised to Hawaii in late March and there were hundreds of whales with their babies and escorts in Maui. Did you see any whales?
the2ofus Posted March 9, 2009 #19 Share Posted March 9, 2009 What a shame that you had to miss Kauai but better than risk damage to the ship trying to get into that harbor. The Napali coast is very beautiful, I'm glad you were able to see it. Now you have a good reason to go back to Hawaii on another cruise. For those who have taken this cruise in November, how were the crossings at that time of year? Did you see many whales in November?
RuthC Posted March 9, 2009 #20 Share Posted March 9, 2009 I'm wondering what kind of "on board credit" you got for us missing Kauai? (We only got a glass a champagne at dinner.) Kauai - $6.25 and glass of Champagne and Ensenada $12.51 and a glass of Champagne Port charges are always returned when the ship can't make it to a given port. Those appear as an OBC. jbhcw Posted March 9, 2009 #21 Share Posted March 9, 2009 Another question for GTV, or any other Hawaii cruiser!! Our cruise is next April 6th. Will we see any whales during that time of the year, either going/coming or while we're there? I think that would be a delight, and am hoping that we do see some marine life:)
Barocl Posted March 9, 2009 #22 Share Posted March 9, 2009 We were on the 05Feb09 Hawaii Cruise and had nearly the same problems. Rough seas and cold weather. We had to leave Lahaina early because of the weather and like you arrived in Mexico around 11:30 pm and sailed on to San Diego. We received out port charges back for missing Mexico and a drink at meal time. I had my usual diet coke and my wife had a glass of white wine. So it appears passengers had their choice of drinks. Take care.

Take care. We didn't have a choice of drinks. It was very disappointing to miss Kauai.... and when I heard On Board Credit... I was thinking it was more than just that little port charge returned:p. We had no plans for Mexico port... just hoping to put our feet on some land for a few hours. For us... it was LONG days at sea.:D

I think that would be a delight, and am hoping that we do see some marine life:) Whales were all over the place in Maui. Those that took the whale watching trips (both from HAL and private) were so very happy ! We saw them them from a far (on the ship) and as we drove around the island. They couldn't be missed. One couple said they went with a private company.. took the morning tour, enjoyed it so much, book the same tour for the afternoon ! They loved both trips. So ENJOY !:D We enjoyed driving around Maui, the north shore and seeing the breath taking views and the volcano we were happy with our choice too. They will begin their way back to Alaska then, just like all the cruise lines ships.;) Enjoy your cruise! John
