Holland America Review Day 1

This is the first of a daily review of the 11/27 sailing of the Zaanadam, eastern Caribbean cruise. The daily review will be short covering the major events. This is our first HAL cruise but have been on a number of other cruise lines.

Day 1 – Embarkation, Port Canaveral

Embarkation

Drove in from home and arrived around 10:40am. Bag drop is where the busses unload and if you are early, there is a parking lot straight ahead ($70 and they take MC and Visa). Otherwise parking is across the street. Security is just inside the terminal, then upstairs for filling out forms (don’t know why all forms are not sent with documentation) and check-in. Check-in was very quick at that time in the morning and we waited 20 minutes for boarding at 11:30am. We did notice at around 1:00pm that the line outside the terminal was backed-up to the bus drop-off area.

Meals

Buffet lunch along with all other noontime food stations are from 11:30am – 4:15. It is nice that all food stations (taco bar, grill, sandwich station, ice cream, etc.) are all open. No waits for anything.

Dinner provides a good selection but I will report more on that after a few meals. We did notice that the wait staff was much busier than on pervious cruises and that the assistant maitre de is doing much waiter duties.

Other Stuff

Rooms are available at 1:30pm. If you have an odd number outside room you will want to close the drape to block the sun to keep the room cool. There was a 45 minute delay in leaving due to an engine malfunction.

More tomorrow.

"then upstairs for filling out forms (don’t know why all forms are not sent with documentation) "

 - what forms are you taking about? We received the Immigration forms with our docs, but didn't use them as we had filled them out and submitted them on line. If this is what you are talking about and if you didn't register on line, then you should have filled them out before arriving at the pier.

The other form we received this time, which we have never received before, is the one for our credit card information. The Bahamas form has never been in with the docs. This has always been received on the ship.
