Do you want to know how much it really cost?

Thought it would be helpful to start a post about the cost involved to a cruise.

I know every one will have different cost but there are some basics.

Feel free to add your cost.

For a 7 day cruise.

1. Cruise cost with port charges and tax, will of course vary. on average for me is $800

2. Transportation to port city, air or drive. Air for me $200 to $300

3. Parking for car, $10 to $20 per day or hotel stay and fly

4. Hotel the night before, $100

5. Night before expenses, food, drink etc. $50

6. Tips for luggage handling, $5 for 2 bags, shuttle driver, at port, etc. $30

7. Trip Insurance, 2 people about $100

8. Transportation from airport to cruise ship, shuttle is about $20 each way pp(FLL to POM)

9. Tips on the ship, MIN of $10 per day pp, we always have left more for good service.

10. Photos on the ship, I never buy so don't know the price

11. Drinks...Expensive!!! Pop card about $45

12. Bingo..can't remember but something like 3 cards for $20?

13. Specialty coffee extra charge

14. Shore excursions, I plan on $50 to $75 pp on each stop, usually cheaper if you book off

cruise ship, of course will depend on what you do.

15. Tux rental about $100

16. Room service tips $2 per order

17. Gifts

Basically I plan on $1,400 for my total trip pp.

I am sure I have left things out, and of course it depends on your own spending habits, but this is close.

I hear your pain. It costs me $15 a day for a home visit for my cat. That said, the cat loves her sitter and the lady is very dependable. I also like the idea that someone is coming into the house once a day in case there's something wrong - leak, furnace goes out, etc.

Michelle, over in the Money Tips forum I posted what I spent on my 5-day cruise back in January. It generated a lot of discussion.

In my case, this is a little on the lean side.

Here is a brief summary of my last one in round numbers.

1) Airfare - $800

2) Hotel - $150

3) drinks, dinner, day before - $200

4) cab to port/airport - $50

4) Cruise $1,600

5) tab on cruise (including tips, 1 pic, drinks) - $1,200

6) beer, food, transportation in port - $200 for the week

7) Parking at home airport - $50

8) Bingo - who cares? Casino normally break even at the worst - craps table.

These are the basics: I figure for the two of us it's about $4,500 for the week.

Here is the breakdown for our upcoming cruise. All prices include 2 people.

Air--$438 Air Tran

Parking at airport--$61

Hotel for one night--$100

food to and from cruise--$125

Cruise, taxes, fees, and transfers--$1208

Excursions--$356

Gratuities--$125 (all)

Bar tab--$50

Misc purchases aboard--$50

Dinner options on board--$50

Purchases on islands--$50

TOTAL--$2613

We usually plan on about $2500 for a cruise for two inside cabin. And we are VERY frugal! A cruise for $329 sounds good until you start adding all of the numbers up.

Yeah, we've already established that we won't take "some cruise, any cruise" because it is cheap. The cost of everything else adds SO MUCH to our bottom line, we will only take a cruise if it is one that really appeals. We spent about $5000 total on our last cruise, and BELIEVE ME -- the cruise cost was the cheap part. For us, now, with the cost of airfare, it isn't worth it to do a 7 day cruise. Sigh.....

The killer expense for us (other than airfare) is pet care. We could buy the pets an inside cabin and it would be cheaper than boarding/home care/etc.

That's about right. We have two schnauzers- and their 'doggie spa' boarding adds up.

We live in Fla., so airfare is normally a non-issue for us.

Hey Roz - haven't seen any postings from your since our Fascination cruise in Jan! Well, have you booked anymore yet? My daughter was so hooked after that one, we are going again in May! We are doing a 7 day western carribean on the Valor out of Miami! Can't get here soon enough for me! Take care!

5. Meals precruise (2 days, nothing fancy)- $200

6. Pop to take onboard $30

7. Tips- $280

8. Other misc. onboard costs- $50

9. Excursions (we're doing our own thing)- $300

Since we booked and paid for this cruise my DH was laid off so we are trying to spend as little as possible. We are not doing fancy excursions, we are eating in budget restaurants, we won't be buying any drinks onboard. Anywhere we can save $ we will try.

Oh my gosh......that's hysterical! And so true! Pet care has gone out the roof. I can understand it for my dogs and cats, but get this. I have a small cage with 5 tiny finches in it. Itty, bitty, tiny birds. I called a local vet who specializes in bird care thinking it would be easy to take them over there and board them...just carry them in their cage, sit it up in their bird area and have somene throw in some food and water every other day. He wanted $15 per day per bird...$75 per day. I told them I realized that the $15 per day would be appropriate if people brought in 1 parrot but what price break they would give me for the 5 finches in one cage and was told nothing...$15 per day per bird. I actually sort of chuckled and said to the lady, "you are kidding right....$525 to keep 5 itty bitty birds for a week?" She sternly told me she wasn't kidding and if I didn't like the price I didn't have to bring them there. Needless to say, they stayed home and a neighbor dropped by every other day to give them some food and water. :D

Oh WOW CruisinGram!!!! We have one budgie who runs the household, and we have a special "sitter" come in for him specifically. So far the sitter has refused payment, so he always gets a really nice gift..... guess I better make his gift even NICER in the future!

I'm quite good with leaving all the other pets at home and at kennels -- but I'd be MUCH happier if the bird could vacation with us!

I guess Im lucky cruising mostly out of Galveston. I spend more shopping in ports than anyone else who posted here, wow, and thought I was kinda conservative.

Im figuring around $2K for Voyager for 7 days coming up, probably less since we got a discount this time for VISA card points. Last year we paid fuel plus $50 more pp, so the $1K is just a average $$$$ per person for a week. Less when we do Ecstasy for 5 days. $1500 tops for a 5 day. We have one 4 day booked on Fantasy, so more gas to get there and hotels cost more in New Orleans. We dont need a hotel in Galveston.

I would dread seeing our total cost! Our airfare alone from Spain cost about $2300. Plus we have 4 pets so we pay airfares for a couple to come out from the UK (friends) to pet sit. What is it with these pets..are we all crazy:D

Wow! That is so crazy, over $500 for little finches! Birds are so low-maintenance though, seriously. We have one parakeet and he requires about the same amount of effort. I'm glad we've never tried to board him anywhere! Now I'm reallllllly grateful that our neighbors take him while we're gone.

So weird how familiar this sounds! This is exactly what we do with our parakeet (not a budgie but he's so big he could be mistaken for one!) Ours definitely runs the house too, LOL! :D And my Mom has trouble leaving him behind for cruises! Last time we brought along a picture of him to put in the cabin...it helped with missing him.

After hearing how crazy pet boarding is, I really am extra glad we have such nice neighbors who watch him while we're away...trust me, they are going to get nicer gifts next cruisetime too! :D
