Just back from Destiny

Just back from Destiny or should I say "Paradise" OMG it was the best, if any of you are thinking about going on the destiny don't hesitate any longer. My husband and I went on the 5 day Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios run. We decided to splurge and go for the balcony, I am sooo glad we did just sitting out in the sun, or moon watching or listening to the ocean is the best. The room was fantastic, clean, QUIET, very comfortable our cabin stewardess was Irish (that was her name) we could leave or room in the morning, turn back around because we forgot something and the room would be clean, bed made! how do they do that. We stayed on the Lido deck, since this is the "happening" deck I was a little worried about the crowds, noise, overwelming smells of the buffets going around the clock, but it was the best I would recommend the Lido deck to everyone. the food, coffee was right there for the taking, the pools, bars, deck loungers. big screen movies. and fun right there! but yet we saw nothing, heard nothing, smelled nothing from our room. We didn't make but 1 show and it was great, there is just sooo much to do there wasn't enough time to do everything. we ate dinner in the dinning room "Universe" late seating every night but 1, we did the Lido buffet and deck buffet the rest of the time. Oh I also had the deli twice, I just love bagels lox and cream cheese. my husband loved getting frozen yogurt cone anytime he wanted. We went to all the shops on board. Spent too much time in the casino, but didn't do as bad as I expected. I had heard that the machines were tight, but we seemed to hold our own. the table games were a blast we met alot of fun people. We had coffee at the cafe (not a fan) and I like coffee. And thanks to the tips from this cruise board tried a Miami Vice, Thanks!!!! it was great. I am not a big drinker, kinda like the fruti drinks and this was perfect. my husband purchased a soda card which saved a bunch in the long run. Dinners were great our server was Michael and I just can't say enough he was fabulous. my advise would be just try it. just try everything, (well maybe not the escargo) Nothing is bad, somethings are different, but all is wonderful. Ok something about the ports. 1st up was Grand Cayman we tendered over early (we are early birds) so the stores weren't open yet. we decided to wing it and not book an excursion. I am not the type of person that like getting locked into sometime. so we decided to walk and find seven mile beach. Well did we walk I estimate aroung 10 - 15 miles round trip. couldn't find a taxi anywhere. My advise, book the excursion in Grand Cayman!! we did find the beach and it was the most unreal blue you will ever see. The sand was rough, I guess because of the coral, but it was wonderful we played like little kids (husband is 52 I am 48) We had a hard time finding food nearby. but there is alot by the pier. We walked back to the pier, shopped, found a great Caymanite necklace, then tender back to the ship, ate the buffet and fell asleep for 10 hours!!! (the night we missed the dinning room dinner) 2nd port was Ocho Rios I woke early as we pulled into port, I was suprised because I thought we where going to tender but we didn't. I had heard alot of scary things about Jamaica, and since we were going to wing it again I was worried. But as they say in Ocho Rios NO Worries! the pier was very secure, gaurds everywhere. we go off the boat and was asked right away where we were going, we let the gentleman know that we wanted a taxi to go to Dunns falls. he lead us almost by the hand to a taxi, told us how much we should pay (40.00) round trip for 2. the driver took us right there and set up the time to pick us up. The falls I can't even put into words you just have to go!!! we bought a picture of ourselves and the DVD afterwards, Oh and we also go suckered into buying a wooden figureen with our names on it (by the way we where warned, and are pretty good at the art of saying no, we have kids! but yet the still got us) so good luck with that!! I did find that if you told them you were broke, no money, spent it all. they left you alone better than just saying no. Well we weren't sure if the taxi would show but at exactly 9:30 there he was he found us! he took us back to the ship, we went in and changed out of our wet clothes and then went to the recommended shops all walking distance and heavily gaurded area. Bought some Blue mountain Coffee, tried some jerk chicken and then back to the boat. Another fun thing about the balcony is you can watch the drunk passengers trying to walk back to the ship on time. Can't believe people cut it so close. The last full day we went to the debarkment talk, I thought it would be boaring but nothing on the ship is boaring they make anything and everyting entertaining. we played bingo right before the talk and WOW I WON!!! couldn't believe it 750.00 they deducted our onboard purchases and the last morning gave me a statement and a check for the remainder. So to sum up, don't hesitate book your trip now, remember life should have no regrets!!! don't regret not going, you will never regret going. It is the trip of a lifetime. I am not going to post photos, because it would be much better to look at yourself on the beach than me! Happy sailing and have a Miami Vice for me. ;)

ah, great to hear!!!! I'm going on the Destiny in 42 days!! I did Ocho Rios and Grand Cayman last may on the Victory, and loveddddddd the ship and those two ports! Ocho Rios/Dunns River Falls was my favorite stop! I loved everything about Jamaica and tell everyone to at least give it a try! Glad you shared my love for it! YAH MAN!!!!

Destiny is doing Western in May when I'm on her, and I look forward to those ports, especially Half Moon Cay!!! Now that I know she's a good ship I can't wait for May to come!!!!!

Thanks again!

Megan

We just got off this same cruise and I agree with TwentyThree, it was awesome. We are a family of four and we had a great time. There is something for everyone. We did the same - no booked excursions, just winged it at both ports and loved all of it.

My husband thinks I'm crazy because I want to book the Eastern Caribbean itinerary on the Destiny already because I loved the ship so much even though we just got back 4 days ago.

Thanks for the review - we did the exact same trip on her in January, and your review is bringing back some great memories.

I agree - she is a great ship, and the staff on board are amazing.

Glad you had a great time.

Thanks for the review...I'm hoping to get on this ship on the 4th of July weekend...That's the only bad thing about the military...I don't know when I can go until it's a couple weeks out...Things are looking good so I can't wait!!!!

Thanks for the review.

Just wondering... did you have a reggae deck band? If so, how were they, and how were their hours?

I too am wondering if they had the live band. We are considering Destiny and really enjoyed the band on the Triumph last year.

Yes, they play lots of Bob Marley. I think they're called "Caribbean Secret."
