twopats Posted April 5, 2009 #1 Share Posted April 5, 2009 We have visited Athens 3 times and want to do a tour outside the city. I have a quote from sprostours for a tour to either Delphi or Peloponnese for 240 Euros for a cab for 4. They warn only to take the driver that holds up your name so I am wondering if it might be less expensive to just pick a taxi at the pier? Apparently this is not a guide but simply a taxi driver. Has anyone used *********** and were you happy with them? Thanks for any input or advice. Trish
marilyn71 Posted April 7, 2009 #2 Share Posted April 7, 2009 We were in Athens in March and shared a cab with another couple. It was 120 euros, was all day. We had never been so went to Acropolis, etc. But he would also take you to other places as well, although I don't know a price for that. OUr driver was George, he was great, told us alot of the history of the area, etc. We will definitely contact him again. He was just one of the cab drivers outside, but we were very happy with the trip. I will post his contact info as soon as I find it, it's packed away somewhere with all our other brochures, receipts, etc. Check back soon. Thanks so much for trying to help us but I can't seem to bring up the web site you quoted. Do you have an email address for George or perhaps the web site address has a missing letter? Trish Trish, there is no website, just a mobile phone #, you may have to look up the country code but his cell number is: 6949.202.838. You won't be disappointed for only 120 euros/day. you can contact me directly if you need anymore information. mwebster@bham.rr.com Marilyn
Bruin Steve Posted April 15, 2009 #6 Share Posted April 15, 2009 Wow...where do I start... First of all, we've been to Athens three times now...First time, toured just Athens on our own...second time--ships excursion to Athens and Capr Sounion...Third time, private Taxi tour for two to Pelopennese Cape Sounion is worth seeing, but other direction from Pelopennese--save it for another trip...there's so much more to see in the Pelopennese... We paid 250 Euro for a full day Pelopennese Taxi tour...It is going to cost more than just a city tour due to the distances and gas used... Arrange for it ahead of time, don't just count on picking up a taxi at the pier...If large ships are arriving in port, all of the taxis may just be pre-booked--they basically were last time we were there...People were getting off the ships just looking for a taxi and not having any luck. The taxi we booked was quite nice...a very recent model Mercedes E class in excellent condition...but, yes, to my experience fairly standard in Athens is that these tours are done in yellow taxis--though a yellow Mercedes feels the same on the inside as any other Mercedes... The other key is that any old taxi driver might not speak English...So, find a recommendation for one who speaks good English and has some knowledge about the sites he's taking you to... The Pelopennese is absolutely amazing...We visited Corinth, Epidauras, Mycenae, Nafplion and more...Some outright incredible archaeological sites, scenic countryside...absolutely outstanding...Our driver pretty much had the circuit down...timing, stops, etc. I highly recommend it--especially if you've been to Athens before and have seen the Acropolis enough...Also gets you out of the crowds and hustle and bustle of urban Athens... Have fun...
