rkacruiser Posted April 18, 2009 #26 Share Posted April 18, 2009 Many, many thanks for the responses to my question. I have vacationed several times in Virginia Beach and think it would be really interesting to be awake and aware when we sail from Hampton Roads and past Virginia Beach. I recall seeing from my Virginia Beach hotel balcony the former Regal Princess on her positioning, delivery voyage to Florida. (Once cleared of the entrance to the Roads, her Captain "put his foot to the pedal" and --man, did that ship move South!) Also, watching the well-lit Prinsendam sailing into Hampton Roads very early one morning was a treat as well.

Also, watching the well-lit Prinsendam sailing into Hampton Roads very early one morning was a treat as well. I grew up in that area - only a block or so off the waterfront in Hampton. Being so familiar with the surrounding sights like the Naval Base, Ft. Monroe, the Hampton Roads and Bay Bridge tunnels, etc. - it was really neat for me when I sailed from Norfolk to get to see all those familiar sights from a cruise ship. :) I am very excited about making the trip down the bay from Baltimore - I may end up out on deck half the night. :o
DPurcell58 Posted April 19, 2009 #28 Share Posted April 19, 2009 I just checked for 8/29 - 8 nights - $149, without an AARP discount, couldn't get my number to work , have to find out why. (Also have to change my countdown, now sailing on the Pride instead of Grandeur.)
FIRELT5 Posted April 27, 2009 #29 Share Posted April 27, 2009 Carnival begins year-round Baltimore service 27/4/2009 Carnival Cruise Lines is launching Baltimore’s first year-round cruise schedule with today’s inaugural departure of the 2,124-passenger Carnival Pride. The ship arrived this morning at the South Locust Point Cruise Terminal, accompanied by The Pride of Baltimore, an reproduction of a 19th-century clipper topsail schooner. A reception on board Carnival Pride hosted port and community officials, dignitaries and other VIPs. Today’s voyage marks the first of 50 annually aboard the 88,500gt Fun Ship, which is expected to carry 115,000 passengers a year from Baltimore. Carnival Pride will operate six-, seven- and eight-day cruises from Baltimore through August before embarking on a year-round seven-day schedule starting Sept. 6 with cruises departing every Sunday. Two itineraries will be offered, an Eastern Caribbean route to Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay and Freeport, and a Bahamas/Florida route to Port Canaveral, Nassau and Freeport. With the new service, Carnival now sails from 19 North American departure points. The Port of Baltimore estimates that with the addition of Carnival Pride, the cruise industry will provide an annual economic impact of $152m and generate 1,550 jobs within the state of Maryland. Welovetokruze Posted May 1, 2009 #32 Share Posted May 1, 2009 Hi Cathy, I'll be sailing out of Baltimore too on May 17th, so I'm just as curious as you as to how everything goes out of Baltimore. Alas, The Pride will be the very first ship from Carnival to sail from there, so no one will be able to give you an answer about it all yet. The first sailing from Baltimore is leaving on April 27th. So, hopefully a week or two after that we should start hearing reviews from those cruisers :) Actually, the Carnival Legend sailed out of Baltimore 1 season about 6 years ago.:D
MarylandLady Posted May 1, 2009 #33 Share Posted May 1, 2009 Actually, the Carnival Legend sailed out of Baltimore 1 season about 6 years ago.:D You are partially correct! I was on the Miracle when it sailed from Baltimore in 2004. What a great cruise that was!!!! It was at a different dock at that time, so I haven't been out of the new one yet (but will in July). I do hope that they have improved the debarkation process now. We sat outside for like 5 hours before Customs would let us off the ship. It was around 1:00 pm when we got off after arriving around 8:00 am. My sister took an 11 day cruise out of Baltimore on another line and they didn't get off until after 3:00, again it was Customs. It will be interesting to see how it works for this first group on the Pride!!! Can't wait to see the reviews on it.:D
Welovetokruze Posted May 1, 2009 #34 Share Posted May 1, 2009 On 4-2942003 I sailed on the Legend out of Baltimore to Bermuda, 6 nights . As far as I know the Miracle has never sailed out of Baltimore, New York- yes, it replaced the Legend 3 years ago.

ryanpatricksmom Posted May 1, 2009 #36 Share Posted May 1, 2009 I'm going to assume Carnival will do things similar to Royal Caribbean has. Royal Caribbean usually leaves at 4 and opens the shops at 4:30 and casinos around supper time (I don't gamble so don't pay an awful lot of attention to the exact time). It takes about 45 minutes to get to the Key Bridge and 2 hours to get to the Annapolis Bay Bridge. It takes about 7 hours to bet to the Chesapeake Bay bridge. Royal Caribbean's Granduer gets in at either 7 or 8 depending on the itenerary and picks up the pilot at 10 or 11 pm the night before. The casino is still open when I go to bed about midnight so I'm not sure what time it closes the last night. The shops usually close about 11 pm. Good grief! I had no idea that it would take 7 hours to make it to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Clearly it's a no-wake zone for most of the trip. I can drive that distance in less than an hour, LOL! I can see that I'll be up half the night.
dixieva Posted May 1, 2009 #37 Share Posted May 1, 2009 I've sailed several times from Baltimore on RCCL. We always left at 4. The Key Bridge is 45 minutes and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (the overhead bridge) is about2 hours. Now it does take 7 or so hours to get to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. So if you want to see the lights from that you will have to stay up late. That's about all you can see is the lights as the tunnel and bridge go along. I think the other poster was confused about the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The ship will sail under only two bridges-the Key and the Bay. And both of those you don't want to miss! It is spectacular! As far as I know the Miracle has never sailed out of Baltimore, New York- yes, it replaced the Legend 3 years ago. Hmmmm -- I guess we are both correct! I took the Miracle in May 2004 out of Baltimore to Key West, Nassau, and Freeport and also took the Miracle out of NY in July 2007. https://www.bookccl.com/CCLNews/Release.asp?PRID=290 I did not know about the Legend going to Bermuda in 2002. I would have taken it instead of the Triumph to Canada that year. That was the first time I had cruised in a long time. Sorry I missed it! http://www.carnivalgolf.com/carnival/press-legend.html

I have sailed past the Bay Bridge Tunnel twice out of Norfolk - it's less than spectacular so you aren't missing much there. It's just that you'll be out in the open Atlantic after that instead of in the Bay. The bridge is mostly low to the water and there's nothing to sail under - there will be a tunnel beneath you. :p I am looking foward to sailing under the Bay Bridge up north, though. So if we have an early seating .... do you think it would be possible to stay up on deck to see the Key Bridge and then once finished with dinner see the Chesapeake Bay Bridge....if we time it just right? We didnt go up on deck for the trip past the Statue of Liberty and the Verrazano Bridge when we sailed the Miracle out of New York because we didnt think we would make our dinner....only to see that most people (including our tablemates) stayed up top until they passed :(. dixieva Posted May 2, 2009 #42 Share Posted May 2, 2009 You'll have gone under both bridges by your early time dinner. Key Bridge is 45 minutes-around 4:45 and you should be at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge around 6. We ran into the dining room right after we went under that one. Of course this info is based on sailing at 4 so if you leave later than that the times will change. The Bay Bridge Tunnel is the one that is 7 hours out and as someone else said there's not much to see except the lights. BTW the Key Bridge is more exciting since it looks like no way will the ship fit under there.

I'm hoping with late dinner we can be up on deck for both!

Thanks for the correction. The 2nd overhead bridge is 45 minutes from leaving. Memory must be failing. I thought I remembered the ship calling the bridge/tunnel the chesapeake bridge. The Bay Bridge Tunnel is always at night.

I realize I'm getting older, however, I was on that ship for my 10th wedding anniversary and I remember it quite well! So many folks have been basically telling me I was crazy and that the Miracle never sailed from Baltimore! LOL
MarkW-FL Posted June 13, 2009 #50 Share Posted June 13, 2009 Does anyone know if there is somewhere nearby the cruise terminal in Baltimore to return a rental car? Or are BWI or the Inner Harbor the only viable options? Thanks!
