greatam Posted April 18, 2009 #2 Share Posted April 18, 2009 Can anyone tell me how much cooler the weather will be in March or April vs. middle of winter on an around the cape cruise? Also, is there a lot less sunlight than? Where are you going??? If going to Antarctica around the 'horn, it will be MUCH colder. But if just going the "normal" route from BA/Rio to Valparaiso, not much difference in either temperature or sunlight between April and February. A little colder in Punta Arenas/Ushuaia, but not much (maybe 5 degrees). And not so hot and humid in Rio/BA. Please be aware-March/April cruises-95% of the penguins are gone from their normal areas. karen327 Posted April 18, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted April 18, 2009 yes, this is just from buenos aires to valparaiso. Thanks for letting me know about the penguians, that is something I want to see. Perhaps we will see if we can go in Feb. instead.
trixietx Posted April 18, 2009 #4 Share Posted April 18, 2009 We left Sao Paulo March13th. on Radiance of the Seas. It was hot in Sao Paulo when we left. The farther south we went the cooler it got. By the time we reached the cape it was cold and windy. Not really so cold, but the wind made it seem very cold. It was that way for about three days. Other than those three days a light jacket was all you needed. When we reached Valparaiso on the 29th. it was still cool, but by the time we got to Santiago it was warm again. trixietx Posted April 18, 2009 #5 Share Posted April 18, 2009 Sorry, I didn't see the other posts. We went to Magdelena Island while we were in Punta Arenas to see the penguins, about 100,000 of them, literally.
greatam Posted April 18, 2009 #6 Share Posted April 18, 2009 Sorry, I didn't see the other posts. We went to Magdelena Island while we were in Punta Arenas to see the penguins, about 100,000 of them, literally. You were very lucky to see so many penguins. Magdalena Island is truly a spectacular sight. The penguins usually leave about March 15. They spend 6 months on land and 6 months at sea. They usually arrive land about Nov 1, so they can have their babies by December. Then 2+ months to raise the chicks and get them ready to survive on their own. So between March 1 and March 15, most are gone.
