Freedom review 4/11/09 8 day western

Short Reveiw. Was a great 8 day cruise. One of our better cruises on Carnival.

Embarkation, at dock by 10:30 am, on ship at 11am. Platnium makes it really nice to cut to front of lines etc, while boarding. Room was ready by 1pm. Ft Lauderdale is always in my opinion an easy embarkation. BTW we could have carried on all the wine we wanted, took 3 bottles, no one seemed to care about it. Heard others took more, I know what Carnival says, but I think each port is diff. Bags were delivered by 2pm. Mustard Drill was fast and easy, but I still do not like going. I did get to watch a dumbass blowing his whistle though. Yuck!! I know its spelled Muster!

Shore tours. None at Cozumel. Bought Crown XR and Kahlua at duty free store on dock at Cozumel, carried back on ship, no one asked us to check it, so took to the room. We did the Coffee Bean Tour in Limon. Was well worth the money. Air conditioned bus w/ bathroom was a nice touch. Tour was informative and interactive somewhat. Not a tour that kids would enjoy, IMO. Great coffee and coffee liquers available for tasting and sale. Panama was best port for us. Two Oceans by Railroad was outstanding!!! Rode train to Panama City and back. At Panama city departed train and boarded a bus. Went to Mira Flores locks for 1 hour. Saw a film and a complete ship transit thru the locks. Then off for a bus ride around town, then back to train. Not many kids on this tour, but mine would have enjoyed it, I think. Was amazed by the amount of ex US Military bases and civilian housing that we gave to Panama.

Food, touchy subject with many. IMO I think it has become about par with Dennys, except plated very fancy. Remember thats my opinion, wife thought it was just OK. Service was pretty good, but getting coffee at end of meal was always a pain. We ate in the Supper Club. It was better than dining room, and service was outstanding. I have seen posts on this board stating best steaks in the world. I have to disagree with those posters, for $60 bucks plus tip we have better in Oklahoma. There is a line on bill for additional gratuities on the bill. We added a tip since line was there.

Shows, best show on Carnival by far is the BIG EASY show. It was great, did not go to any others. Saw Marvin Bell (comedy act) was funny, but have seen on other ships before.

Casino was not good to me this trip, I donated a lot this time. Poker Pro table was lots of fun. Wife had no luck on slots. But we"re only there for entertainment, never expect to win much.

Aft Balcony cabin 7448 was great. Spent many hours there. No wind, very hot at times. No vibration at all. Will book Aft Cabins from here on!! Cabin steward was good, first week on board.. Never saw him much, room always clean etc.

Chair Hogs. Were out in force, towels books bags and crap everywhere by 7am every morning. It was a hoot to watch people moving others stuff and taking over the Hogs chairs. We maybe spent an hour around pools, always used our balcony instead.

Disembarkation was very smooth. We did not do self assist this time. Was called off ship by groups. We had group 1 and was off by 8:10 am. At FLL by 8:45am.

As I said Great Cruise, we booked the Dream while on board. Early Saver Fare was cheaper than military fare, and we received $100 on board credit. Booked aft cabin . This cruise set a record for Carnival. 3400 guests on board and of that 2300 were past guests. This was stated at past guest party. Proves Carnival is doing something right! 900 kids on this cruise, prior week had 1200.

Did you have to change your clocks on this cruise once you left Ft. Lauderdale? I am trying to find out if the ship time is the same as local time in Panama. (Perhaps you have the Capers where times might have been mentioned?)

Thanks for taking time to post your review! Our Freedom cruise is getting closer and I love reading others' reviews!

Any chance you might post pictures, Capers, menus, etc.? :)

They tell you to change your watch to ship time before arriving to Cozumel. Panama time is the same as central time in the US, which the ship also uses.

Thanks...that is what I've been trying to figure out!
