Caroldoll Posted April 22, 2009 #1 Share Posted April 22, 2009 Is it possible to just rent a car at the pier or should I make arrangements in advance?
drifting_away Posted April 22, 2009 #2 Share Posted April 22, 2009 I would try to make arrangements before hand if you know for sure that you want to rent a car. We were on Moorea for two days and the first day we just went to the pier and requested a car for the second day with no problems.
Rare RachelG Posted April 22, 2009 #3 Share Posted April 22, 2009 We hadn't thought ahead of time that we would want to drive around; however, we changed our minds in Moorea. So at the end of the first day there, I rented one at the pier for the second day. I think it might be difficult to get one the same day as it isn't really like a regular rental car agency where they have all the cars right there. I had the impression the cars are stored somewhere else. The car rental lady just had a little mobile kiosk. (It was Avis.)
Wendy The Wanderer Posted April 23, 2009 #4 Share Posted April 23, 2009 If you're lucky you can rent at the dock. We had the travel desk book for us several days in advance--but as it turned out, the Avis rep wasn't there at the dock when we arrived, and we were directed to Albert's, which is a local company, and they got us a car. Travelcat2 Posted April 23, 2009 #5 Share Posted April 23, 2009 I checked car rentals in Bora Bora -- there was a warning that there are car shortages during busy periods. They recommend booking in advance.;)
Caroldoll Posted April 23, 2009 Author #6 Share Posted April 23, 2009 in touch with Avis. Meheiro who always hangs out here gave a lot of information. We will make it work somehow!
JMARINER Posted April 23, 2009 #7 Share Posted April 23, 2009 Bora Bora- Forget the car and rent a jet ski. You can go around the whole island in less than an hour or so. The whole time you are inside the lagoon. Stop off at a deserted motu for a swim off the beach....... Escorted circle island jet ski was about $190 when I was last there in '07 A-Pac. There is not much to see driving around the island yourself. The road was one of the worst pot-holed messes for at least 2/3 of the way. If you want to go to the beach or out to Bloody-Marys' take cab or ride with the locals. J
Caroldoll Posted April 23, 2009 Author #8 Share Posted April 23, 2009 jet ski, but both of the guys have bad backs. They say they are rough?
laurelguy Posted April 23, 2009 #9 Share Posted April 23, 2009 Done the rental a few times...on Bora Bora, it desn't make much sense. So many motus..you're better off doing the jetskis ..or if bad backs..do one of the sailboat tours around the island. Much prettier from the water (you'll see)...try to get to Bloody Mary's one night. The PG has a tender that goes there specifically at night...on Moorea, it DOES make sense to rent at the pier. A fun island to drive around and explore. Just my opinion. Have a ball whatever you do. Going on my 3rd PG this summer. An addict for Polynesia!!
Travelcat2 Posted April 23, 2009 #10 Share Posted April 23, 2009 I agree that the pot holed roads in Bora Bora aren't the greatest to drive on -- and not much to see from the road. A sailboat sounds like a good alternative.
Wendy The Wanderer Posted April 23, 2009 #11 Share Posted April 23, 2009 Agree for the most part with Laurel about Bora Bora. If you're going to do something on land, make it a 4x4 trip where you get up high and see some wonderful vistas. Other than that, and a bit of shopping in Vaitape, get out on the water, one way or another. I don't agree about Bloody Mary's, but that's a matter of opinion, too touristy for me. Last time we were on the ship there was no tender to Bloody Mary's, don't know why.
Bearnaise Posted April 23, 2009 #12 Share Posted April 23, 2009 This thread has certainly been helpful. I was worrying whether renting a car in between our scheduled morning and night dive "excursions" on our one Bora Bora day would be too much, especially if we wanted to somehow cram in the motu as well. It sounds like it's not worth the time, hassle, or cost. But I will reserve ahead for Moorea!

It sounds like it's not worth the time, hassle, or cost. But I will reserve ahead for Moorea! We dove in the morning, came back had brunch and bloody marys (the PGs bloody marys are way better than Bloody Mary's). Then we hit the motu for a nice relaxing afternoon. The other day we took a boat tour around the lagoon and snorkeled a bit. That too was very nice!! After we shopped in Vaitape a bit. Our friends didn't want to do the jet skis so they did the jet boat and had a blast. Our other friends rented bikes and regreted doing so. To much exercise and little too hot We all went to Bloody Mary's for dinner and all agreed that we should have just come for lunch or just a drink! It is fun to see the signage and the bathrooms (men's toilet pull thingy is worth seeing if you have a sense of adventure!)
canadagal Posted April 24, 2009 #14 Share Posted April 24, 2009 We rented a car last month on Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora. We pre-arranged this through Avis Pacificar. Below is the email link to the manager of Avis, Sandrine. Sandrine speaks fluent English and you won't have any mixups with your reservation or any communication problems via email. At first we just booked via the Avis Pacificar website and everything we asked about came back in French. I only speak and read rudimentary French so that's when I contacted Sandrine as per Meherio's advice. I suggest you do not wait until you get there as if there is more then one ship in port then you could be out of luck. The roads on Bora Bora for almost half the island were still full of potholes and I expect them to stay that way until they have finished all of the construction that's going on over on that side of Bora Bora. It looked like they were putting in sewers. It takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to go around the whole island by car allowing for a few short stops in between. I can't tell you whether to do the drive or not as different strokes for different folks. Only until you've done it yourself can you judge whether or not it was a good choice. It does have the advantage though of allowing to stop where you choose and when you choose and to do your own sight seeing and shopping etc. So the 4 hour rental would be plenty enough time to see and do most things. Caroldoll Posted April 24, 2009 Author #15 Share Posted April 24, 2009 wonderful, so we are set for Morea. I am working on Bora Bora. We have a friend who owns a hotel there, so I know our traveling companions will want to go see him. He only goes that at 5 PM in the evening, so we need to be able to get around. It may or may not be a good choice, but we will do it! You have all been so kind and helpful. Thanks many times over.
AlFrank Posted April 24, 2009 #16 Share Posted April 24, 2009 Not sure what they are called, but in Bora Bora they rent these 2 person vehicles. The sell out early so we missed out, don't think they were bad. People we talked to loved them. Also, agree with the other poster. We were originally scheduled to go to Bloody Mary's for dinner, very expensive. Spoke to some others on the ship that went and they said it really wasn't worth the $$$. It's fun to see, we just went in the afternoon for some bloody marys. We met people there from the ship said lunch was ok but they wished they had come for drinks only. Caroldoll Posted April 25, 2009 Author #17 Share Posted April 25, 2009 probably do other stuff too, but we have cars. We did morea through sandrine@avispacificar.pf She is wonderful. That is Morea. In Bora Bora is is avis.bora@gmail.com and she is Sandrine too--but a different one. Got four doors--they call them 5 doors and one is manual and one is auto. They have airconditioning. At least we are covered and don't have to stand in line. Everyone has been so helpful. We have been to FP before, and I agree with the above--Bloody Marys is for the afternoon--just eat on the ship for dinner. We all hope you all have a wonderful time. Aurite Posted April 27, 2009 #18 Share Posted April 27, 2009 So, it is done--we rented cars in both places, and we will -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- probably do other stuff too, but we have cars. Aloha Caroldoll, one word of caution other than the potholes be on the lookout for locals on mopeds, motorcycles, bicycles (esp tourists trying to sight see while driving) and the dogs. I know that was a long word of caution, but just be careful and you'll be fine. see ya soon Larry and Cindy
Caroldoll Posted April 28, 2009 Author #19 Share Posted April 28, 2009 joke--we had to take them back--my husband's knees were black and blue--the bikes are for midgets. The dogs love us--they are pests, aren't they. We have the ability to come and go and that is a good thing. We have a dear friend who owns Club Bali Hai and we will go see him on Morea..then in Bali Hai another friend owns Bloody Marys, so if he is around, we will see him too...I am sure we will have a good time. Still looking forward to running into you. We will!
