11/28 Rhapsody Review In Brief

Recommended Posts

Just back from a wonderful cruise. We had perfect weather, beautiful seas and top notch service.

We stayed at Harbor House pre cruise and would recommend it. But do not walk to the terminal - we thought we would but of course, Rhapsody was at the far end. It's only a $5 cab fare. Great location, fair price, good place to leave the car. (Although my car got keyed while parked on the Seawall Friday night. A good place to have breakfast is the Phoenix right off the Strand. If you need a wake me up pre cruise, there is a Starbucks right across the street from the terminal.

We arrived early, and had no lines for check in. Suites and Platinum/Diamond had their own line so that made it even easier. Also, those groups got to board first right after any wedding groups. We were on board within 15 minutes and on the pool deck having a pina colada by noon! Mark, a pool waiter, made some mean brown pina coladas if you get my drift!!! He started the vacation right!

We had a short lunch in the Windjammer and then got to our rooms right when they opened. We splurged and got a Grand Suite (8516) and it was grand. Our only complaint was that we couldn't find anything because there was so much storage we couldn't remember where we put things. Great room, glad we did it, will probably do it again for the right price. Next year we are back to a mini suite and will be happy with it, but don't get me wrong, the Grand Suite is fabulous!

Overall, I felt the food was better than 3 years ago. Not a whole lot of versatility at lunch, and it is very starchy but prepared well. I also felt dinner had improved in quality as well. Our waiter Sari and his assistant Marko were outstanding.

Here's a brief port report. We did the Champagne Sunset Sail at Key West and enjoyed it. Most of the people on this were in their 20-40's. Then we Duval Crawled and had a great time. Wild evening and lots of laughter. If you are in party mode, visit Irish Kevins. If you just want to watch and laugh, visit Irish Kevins. Sloppy Joes and Hogs Breath are also good places to stop.

Second stop was Costa Maya. I had read up here on the board and once we got to Mahahual, we walked through the village to the very end and found Pez Quadro - the bar with the rope swings. Lounge chairs by the water, $2 beer and a nice relaxing atmosphere. Very quiet. The kayak excursion from the ship showed up here shortly after we did so that was a good sign. We stayed there for a few hours. I had a 30 minute massage for $20 that was AWESOME. I did not expect professional quality but I was surprised. It was as good as I've had at top spas. Lucas was his name and he was in the group by Pez Quadro. We then walked back to the village and took a cab back to the pier area. We got in the pool, visited the swim up bar, wandered the shops and had some nachos at one of the restaurants. It is a nice port area and also very relaxing.

Third was Cozumel. Once again, this board came in handy. We did Paradise Beach and got there before the crowd. Awesome facility, good wait staff, great guacamole. Clean good changing rooms. Cute bar area, all sorts of water toys. We kayaked, climbed the iceberg ( well, ok one of us couldn't really get on it), climbed the water trampoline and floated on floats. They also have snorkeling equipment. All for the grand total of $5 per person. Had a great 3-4 hours and then it was off to Carlos and Charlies. What can I say about C&C? It's a lot of laughs.

We were little casino addicts so I don't have too many ship details other than that the staff in the casino is a lot of fun and Albert especially makes you laugh as he steals you blind! The bartenders in the Schooner Bar are excellent. The Laraf show is very entertaining and we heard good things about every show from others. The Solarium is my daily hang out - quiet, no kids and relaxing and dramatic music. The Pool is fun - we bet on the horse race and I made my claim to fame by knowing all the ingredients and singing them for Cheeseburger in Paradis (hey, someone had to do it).

Captain Hempstead is very gracious and has a dry sense of humor. I was shocked at how young he looks and of course, told him when we had our picture with him - He told me I could hang with him anytime for that remark (I'm early 40s and he can't be much past me!)

The workout facility could upgrade its equipment - the machines are on their last legs. That's really about the only obvious negative I can come up with.

Happy to answer any questions and happy sailing to all!

And most important, we had a great group of CC'rs on this cruise. We enjoyed meeting you all. And remember, what happens in Mexico, stays in Mexico........and Key West..........and international waters.......and..... 4_1_72.gif 4_1_209.gif

glad you had fun. We were on it over Thanksgiving and we too had our first grand suite! 8508. Did you have Marva as your room stewardess? I don't wanna ever go back to a "lesser" cabin but, I will if I have to! :( The captain does have a very dry sense of humor and it was fun to listen to his noon reports.

We did have Marva and she was great! We don't really want to go back but Mr Wolf wants to spend the extra money in the casino! They did have the ship decorated for Christmas - they put them up the first and second day. Looked very nice.

claowens - from what I understand the ship will go back to Cayman starting in January.

EW- I wish I could say I'm glad to be back....but I guess I'm glad to be back so I can catch up on my sleep. And we booked for 11/28 next year. Hey, $100 is a $100. We hope to see ya'll Saturday - Mr Wolf got home SUnday and his boss called and he had to immediately leave for California. Unpacked, did laundry and repacked. UGH!

We had Sari two years ago and saw him on the ship last year also. This year he saw us at our table the first night and came up to our 10 year old daughter and asked if she still liked yogurt every meal! What a great memory, after seeing so many different people week after week. He is such a nice guy and I think that if he is still on the ship next Thanksgiving he will be a head waiter! We also saw Marva. She was our cabin steward last year and we were just down the hall from her this year with Lesly. Sunday when we boarded, I saw Marva first thing and she saw us and remembered us from the year before. Spoke to her everyday, she really is a nice lady. Must also say that Lesly was wonderful this year....

Nice report Wolfie! Thanks!

We have been so busy since they had to DRAG us off the dance floor to shove us off the ship! We are in withdrawal Linda and Arthur! Yes, every night is dance fever for us. Usually take Friday off to rest when the band os off but got caught up in the sock hop Friday and couldn't pass up dancin!

We are worried a bit about what we will do in April if the band isn't as good on Galaxy.........could be a problem for 12 days with no ballroom dance. We've been told not to worry though.

Check out the pics I posted on webshots if you have time http://community.webshots.com/user/a68vet

I can't get caught up on work so no dancing till Friday and Saturday night. Then off to San Antonio and F-berg for Christmas light trip next week!

Miss you great Cruise Critics! Thanks for making it a fun week!

A68VET,

Don/Laura

We were wondering of you were ever going to post again. The pics were great and looks like you had a great time. We enjoyed our trip in October. We are going on the Mariner next year. Are you going on the Galaxy out of Galveston? Email us when you get a chance.

Hi Gary and Sandy!

I am so happy to hear from yall! I was thinking of you two last week as well as all of our cruise critic friends from our "famous" halloween cruise. The ship is in fantastic shape. Lots of improvements. Don't know how they make each cruise progressively better than the last one on Rhapsody. This is my FAVORITE ship floating!

You two should go with us on the Galaxy! 4/25/05 and we will have a great time I know. Think about it.......

Give us a shout sometimes.

Wolfie,

Great review....I love the fact that your suite was soooo big that you misplaced stuff! Now that's the way to travel! Next Oct will be our first on the Rhapsody, and we are in a Junior suite - aft. I think I will love it! I've only been on RCCL twice now, this sailing will be my third. Any recomendations to make our cruise even more enjoyable? Happy Cruising!!

Christi
