Rare mooline Posted June 6, 2009 #1 Share Posted June 6, 2009 Yes, yes, I know...go with the flow. But I can't help it, I'm a planner. :p There's always a chance of rain in Alaska...so if that does happen, what do each of you suggest as the best alternative "plan B" shore excursion the ports listed below? I've listed everything that our group of 6 plans to do (all booked thru NCL) in 2 of our 3 Alaska ports (excludes Ketchikan, where our plans for the Bering Sea Crab Fishermen tour are fixed no matter what.) Looking at the 15-day forecast, (subject to change this far out, of course) rain (not showers, rain) is in the forecast for the latter part of our itinerary. So just want some ideas in the back pocket. Thanks!! Juneau: Taku Lodge Flight and Feast; Mendenhall Glacier Float and Tracy Arm Jet Boat Excursion Skagway: White Pass RR (12:30 pm in case of am fog); Chilkoot Hike and River Excursion Thanks so, so much! krogerlady Posted June 6, 2009 #2 Share Posted June 6, 2009 From what I have read most of the excursion go on, rain or shine. I guess anything that leaves the ground has to plan on a moment by moment schedule. We all have been warned about rain, in all the ports, and while the folks just coming back have reported better than average weather, we knew it wouldnt last. We will have rain, if the forecast is right, in at least half of our ports, and no telling what the sea days will be like. I have rain jackets and waterproof shoes, and lots of socks....and can do laundry if all my clothes get soaked, but i will not miss anything just because its raining. Oh, yeah, also have a raincoat for my camera....we are good to go!!
SeattleCruiselover Posted June 6, 2009 #3 Share Posted June 6, 2009 Yep, you really don't need a Plan B, 99.9% of all excursions go rain or shine. Some of the flightseeing tours might not, but that is a last minute thing. It rains in Alaska (a LOT at times), but I have never let it keep me from doing whatever I had planned, and I have never gotten totally soaked (well, OK, there was 9/12/2001, but I figured that was just the angels weeping and let it go at that). Go, enjoy, no matter what the weather.
98Charlie Posted June 6, 2009 #4 Share Posted June 6, 2009 Have to agree that the best plan "B" is to take your rain slicker:p With the flight you may not really know until the last minute. Charlie

krogerlady Posted June 6, 2009 #7 Share Posted June 6, 2009 krogerlady, what do you use to cover your camera, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?ci=0&shs=rain+sleeve&sb=ps&pn=1&sq=desc&InitialSearch=yes&O=jsp%2Fproductlist.jsp&A=search&Q=*&bhs=t This was suggested by Pierces in the photo forum, so I ordered a pack. Shipping was really fast.
vbmom87 Posted June 6, 2009 #8 Share Posted June 6, 2009 what do you use to cover your camera, This is what I used after finding a recommendation for this last year on this forum. It worked great and many told me how "smart" I was. (We had our share of rain) http://www.instructables.com/id/Camera-Zip-lock/

Lessa11 Posted June 6, 2009 #10 Share Posted June 6, 2009 My plan would be, don't pre-book something you don't want to do if it's raining.
kenish Posted June 7, 2009 #11 Share Posted June 7, 2009 Sort of like asking "What is Plan B if it's sunny in Miami?" Seriously it's in a rainforest and life would grind to a halt if things were cancelled due to rain. When we were in KTN last year it was pouring, and the floatplanes were still flying. They need only 3 mile visibility to be legal, less than that on instruments.
Rare mooline Posted June 7, 2009 Author #12 Share Posted June 7, 2009 Thanks, everyone, greatly appreciate the replies. I understand the climate in Alaska (reading CC is great!) and this is why I want to be prepared and able to shift at the last minute if need be. Just wanted to have a few "CC recommended" alternatives in case of downpours and in the event that anyone in my group wished to change his or her plans. Just something as simple as the little "ziplock" camera bag suggestion (thanks, vbmom!) is a big help. What a great, inexpensive idea! Thanks again, everyone - less than a week to go!
