As you all have probably heard from the news reports we have had a very eventful start to our holiday….. well really non eventful, as there we were all packed up and had no where to go.

It wasn’t until 10.30 pm that we were finally allowed to board the Dawn Princess. She had come in late due to bad weather and then she was held up at wharf 8 under quarantine by the NSW government . Officials had to report a couple of cases influenza diagonosed earlier in the cruise….. so our government decided they would do a screening for swine flu…

From the Chinese whispers we had heard , part of the delay was that it took that long just for someone important to turn up !!

I am glad that we were the ones getting on and not one of the ones getting off, as they had to sit on the boat not knowing what was going on….. many missing connecting flights and others with anxious family and friends waiting to pick them up… I don’t think they started disembarking till around 8pm. To top it off they were all instructed that they were under quarantine in Sydney and they were not allowed to leave the state till the next day when they were all cleared.

The one plus side was that we had made a group of virtual friends on cruise critic and by the end of this 9 hour debacle we became real friends and felt like we had known each other for ages… there was a lot of joking and humor that got us through this ordeal…

Finally on our boat we made our way to the cabin and unpacked quickly… donned our winter woolies and went up on deck for our much awaited sailaway…

Not the cold or the rain was going to take this away from us …..There was no poolside band nor sailaway cocktails…….just an eerie silence as she moved slowly away from the wharf and glided her way under the bridge, out past the opera house through the heads out into open sea….

Let the Rocking begin….

Over the next few days we experience some pretty major rocking and rolling…. Garry and I took our qwells and I put on my sea bands and we avoided any sea sickness. Being dubbed the Virgin Cruiser by my fellow cruise critorians I thought the deserted hall ways was a sign of how big these boats were. But alas it meant that everyone else was sick… It was a feat of on it’s own to avoid the trays of food left outside each of the cabin….. I would best describe the movement as hitting a bit turbulence on a plane.

Day 1 at sea ended up being our explore day seeing we got on the boat so late the night before…. We have decided that it is better value to have breakfast in the dining room to avoid the masses and the noise of the buffet…. Which of course meant that this is where we ended up for lunch as well…

That morning the captain made the annoucement that we would be missing Noumea…… a lot of people thought “no great loss” but I would have to say I was a little disappointed as we were really looking forward to our Amedee Island tour…. Oh well ce la vie

This meant four days at sea…. Lucky we have made such great friends from cruise critic as we have not laughed or joked so much in along time…. We eat , we drink, play cards, bingo and even tried to play trivia all together…

We all glammed up for formal night and last night we set the ship rocking again with a disco under the stars,…..

As this is a shorter cruise there is a much greater mixed of ages…. We have managed to avoid any signs of age rage….. the experts laughed at me again when I said “there is no laundry rage” and their reply was “ it is only day 2, no one has any dirty clothes yet!!”

We all booked into the sterling steakhouse last night and all was going well until Ross decided to be funny… the waiter brought over a tray displaying all the cuts of meat for us to choose what we wanted…. With a straight face Ross calls out from the back “where do we get the tickets from “ unfortunately this was not included in their training so whilst he had this dumb founded look on his face we were all rolling around on the floor laughing … even funnier was Ray trying to explain to him the meaning of Meat Raffles….

Well this was suppose to be short but yet again has turn in to an epic…..

So I will end here so I can send it off and you get it before we return home…. Finally tomorrow we hitting dry land …. Suva….. will keep you posted….

Joanne and Garry signing off from our balcony sipping our glass of wine!! (that’s wine not swine)

Well it has been a busy couple of days as we had finally hit solid ground….we had just spent the last 4 days at sea and something needed to change otherwise everyone’s on board accounts would cause another global financial crisis.

It was nice to wake up on Thursday morning and watch as we got closer to land. The one thing that was at the back of our minds was whether Fiji was going to take Australia’s stand and not let us off the boat. As time ticked by with no word from the captain that we had been cleared, you could understand what great relief it was to look over our balcony and see the photographers ready in position by the gangway. Apparently the only reason for our delay was because the officials were running on “Fiji time”…… we notice that whenever the Fijians say that they end it with a smile!

Whilst in suva we decided to do the best thing that everyone recommends, get out of suva fast!

Once off boat and the obligatory photos were taken “The Gang” headed down the wharf in search of the mini van that was going to take us to the arts village just out of suva… It took a bit of searching and a couple of phone calls to track our driver down…. The lady at the arts village told us that he was caught in traffic because of road blocks and would be another 10 mins…. We mentioned this to the nice police man in a white skirt who had adopted us and stayed with us until we were picked up, and all he said was “what road blocks”…..hmm real reason “Fiji Time”

Yeah, finally on our way in our nice mini van with air conditioning……hmm after turning a few knobs we realized the only way we were going to get the air to flow was to open the windows!!

It was an approx 40 – 50 min drive to the arts centre at pacific harbor. Our driver pointed out a few of the attractions like the Brewery (figian bitter…drink of sportsmen), the mens jail, the females jail and of course, his house just to name a few. You can’t help but feel sad when you see some of the run down shantys that they live in. To see one of their main staples Taro being sold along the roadside or the pieces of wild boar hanging on a fence…..gives new meaning to drive thru take away.

Finally we arrived at the village and we were greeted as soon as we got out of the van by our guide for the day Joseph.

Once we were all out they started beating the welcoming drums and performers were there to greet us with a song and a loud cry of BULA.

Joseph then took us around to show us how our lunch was being prepared. There was marinated chicken, taro and the taro leaves and stems cooked in coconut milk. The rocks were hot and ready to go , so we buried our food and Joseph then took us around to the theatre for the traditional dancing and firewalking. This is where the Shore tour from the boat joined us, but unfortunately for them it was where they also left us….our day tour was around $60 with lunch and they paid over $100.

The show was very good with lots of traditional dancing, singing, fire walking and humour.

After the show we were taken on a tour their temple and the chiefs hut , which included a carva ceremony. Everyone was offered a drink, I declined due to the fact that everyone says it tastes like dirty water, but everyone else was a little more adventurous, even the French lady who let her underage son have a try.

We then headed back around to where we had buried our food, where it was dug and served to us… it was all very tasty … maybe just a little over cooked …. Taro hmm a little dry…. Taro leaves … yum yum the guys got beer and we females had to settle for Guava juice…

We were then give a little free shopping time then we were taken on a canoe ride around the lake stopping at little huts along the way where we were given a talk and demonstration on such things as weaving, carving, fire making etc

I would have to say the Fijians have such welcoming faces and eyes that seem to light up… hmm and those fella’s in grass skirts not too bad either… they tease you …. They wear these skin coloured undies so that it makes you look twice as they walk past LOL…

This is where our day tour came to an end and we were to meet our mini van out the front to take us back to the ship. Once we got back we had a little time to kill so we took a little walk to the shops. All the market stall people were starting to pack up their wares, but not before they told us we could have a closing special of a 50% discount. That discount probably was out all day… though later on board someone stopped me asked it Iwas the one who helped his wife… apparently she walking through the stalls in the shed and after refusing one of the Indians he grabbed her by the arm to take back to his stall… another lady ( not me ) grabbed her back and lead her away…. They were trying to find her to thank her again…

Once back on board we headed up to the back deck for our first daylight sailaway!!

Suva is not a pretty site… the bus terminal is just next to the wharf and there seemed to be 100’s of buses trying to get in and out with people just running everywhere…

It was a good day

Our next stop was Port Denaru. This is first time we had experienced a tender process….as we were doing a ship shore tour we were lucky enough to be the first off the boat, and not just first , but first onto a much larger catamaran. This made the tender ride to the marina much more pleasant and faster. After dropping some passengers off at the marina we then stayed on board to be taken out to South Sea Island.

This is a very small back packers island… so small that you could walk around it in 10 minutes.

The catamaran stopped just off shore then they brought out these little tinny things to get us onto the island…. Once they gathered everyone together and gave us a drink they went through the days itinerary and what was available to us.

The first thing we did was to board the half submergible submarine, always painted the obligatory yellow it took us to the coral beds around the island… now either the windows are a little smokey or it wasn’t that clear underneath , but there didn’t seem to be those big bright colours that you see in post cards… though we did see some colourful fish swimming around.

Once back on shore we decided to don our own snorkel gear and go in search of nemo ourselves…. Took me ages to work out that you really need to get into water before you try to put flippers on and you can’t walk forward effectively with them on… I think I ended up nose first in the water a few times… Another word of warning don’t always believe the labels, I bought a water proof bag for my camera… So whilst I was rolling around struggling with my flippers, my waterproof bag was slowly leaking water into my camera… and that was that… my camera died on south sea Island!!

When I finally got my act together, Garry was well and truly out at sea snorkeling his little heart out, so I started to venture out … I was struggling having to swim so far out from shore to get to the coral, garry and the fish and I could feel my breathing becoming a little labored ( I have always just jumped off a boat when I have snorkeled before ). I managed to catch sight of a few pretty fish but then I managed to catch sight of how far away land was so I turned around and snorkeled back to shore……

I noticed that the tinny boat was preparing to take people out to deeper water, so I decided that would be better for me… so like a little beached whale there I was on the sand waving madly to get Garry’s attention when he looked up out of the water.. but to no avail…. I had to make the decision “do I wait or do I go” ……. I decided to go and take the chance that Garry would not think that I had been taken by an underwater mini sub like Harold Holt was all those years ago…

Once in deeper water I sat on the edge of the boat thinking should I for shouldn’t I … (at this stage I really needed Garry to encourage me into the water ….. ok so I am not the gamest fish in sea… I don’t even like swimming in the surf much LOL )

The guys from the island were also concerned why I would not jump in…. mind you there I was sitting there legs handing in the water and I am trying to encourage a little girl to jump in with her brother LOL…

Any way deep breath and in I went…… always within arm’s length of the boat…. I did remember to take my premium crackers with me… but someone should have warned us how hard it is to open while you are under water… LOL… then the fish came from everywhere…. It was good… but there was more and more…. Of course I panicked a little cause I then thought a reef shark might come to see what was going on…. So up and out of the water I hopped and sat on that boat very proudly that I made it in!!

By the time we got back lunch was already served and the dance show was over ….. Garry had given up on me and I found him enjoying his lunch without me… after a little bit more time down on beach it was time to pack up head back to either marina or the boat…

We decided to go back to the marina, that was a hive of activity… lots of cruisers wandering around …. Lots of taxi drivers trying to solicit passengers and lots of shops after your money… I think you could have spent the whole day sitting at the marina as there was entertainment going on the whole time we were there…. Lots singing and dancing…. We ran into the others having pizza so we stopped and had a coffee and we all went over our days events… they had found a taxi driver to take them to the gardens and to a village and they really enjoyed it and it cost them next to nothing!!

Then we split up again where we all went and spent the rest of Fijian dollars and then some!! I bought wallets for my girls… but I should have waited till Vila as it was cheaper there!!

Then it was back onto the tender to head back to what we called home…. It is quite an initiative of princess to include a sauna on the way back to the boat for everyone in the tender…. Who says they don’t give you anything for nothing LOL

It was to be a dark sailaway today, so back up to the back deck with a bottle of wine with our friends ….. whilst sitting on the deck enjoying the chatter and the drink… we thought gosh we are late…. I wonder when we will sail…. Well that was until Lesley looked over the side and she could see the wash…. God that ship is quite and with only lights and no land to see in the dark you never knew we were moving !!

Dravuni Island

As this was another tender port and well really not much to do than swim and play in the sun…. we decided to make it a late start…. We met Ross and Lesley out front of the dining room for breaky which had become part of our daily routine.

After heading back to our cabins to collect our gear, we met them in the vista lounge to collect our tender tickets…. No drama’s .. no tender rage, as soon as we saw ross and Lesley heading up the corridor we just walked straight up to Tim he gave us our tickets and almost simultaneously called our tender number.. the others didn’t even make it to the lounge before we had them turned around and heading down to the exit….. the seas were making it a bit of game in seeing how many people it trip over as they tried to step into the tender….. lucky to be 10 -15 mins and we were stepping off onto Dravuni Island…. Again another island full of lovely happy locals…

We decided that we would first take the 20 minute walk up the hill to one of the best vantage points of the island … or so I have been told…. We walked , we walked , we climbed and climbed, until we saw the last very long looking ascent to the top… Ross, Lesley and myself decided that the view from that point was good enough….. and let’s face it … we were pooped … but Garry, my hero… will not let a good photo opportunity pass him by so on his own he continued to the top!!!

We told Garry that we would meet back at the beach and the 3 of us made our way back down… we found ourselves a nice piece of beach .. making sure we were not under any coconuts and proceeded to inaugurate Lesley into the world of snorkeling.

After learning my lesson yesterday I was in the water with my flippers on whilst I giggled at Lesley putting her flippers on up on the beach…LOL…. After some instructions from ross on how to use a snorkel she was off and away …. Just as a duck takes to water she was snorkeling like a pro…. It was not long before Garry made it back all covered in sweat clinging onto his camera and grinning at his achievement…. Now we probably weren’t in the best spot as we had to swim past the weeds to find some grey looking coral but we got some good pics of the fishies with Garry’s underwater camera goggles… we were later told that if we swam out another 20 mtrs or so we would have seen some nice stuff… I reckoned we could have just jumped of the dawn princess and snorkeled out there LOL….

As we were slowly losing our little part of the beach to the ocean we decided to walk back up to the village… it is an amazing sight to see all the villagers out there selling food, massages, trinkets, sarongs anything to give them an income…. People lying around on towels on what you would call their front yard… We made a couple of purchases to help build their economy and then headed back to the ship for you know…. A drink!!!

Sail away was up the front of the boat… the captain made the announcement that to help us out of the reef 2 boats from the island had gone up ahead and were either side of the channel from where we would exit…. Each waving a flag so they can be seen for the captain to guide us out… As we passed them the captain blew the horn several times and we all cheered them goodbye to thank them for sharing their island with us…. Could you imagine the view from the little boats … could you imagine how big the dawn princess looked as she sailed pass

Tonight was to be Island Night …. so we decided to eat at the pizzeria , then go and see the early show of Peter Byrnes doing Neil Diamond and make our way up to the deck for the party… but the heavens were not kind to us and at the end of the show they came and made the announcement that island night would have to cancelled due to the rain….. so we had to make our way back to the wheelhouse and drown our sorrows with Mai tai’s ….:-)

excellent review so far Jo, the way you describe things its almost seems as if we were on the cruise with you:D:D

ross

Ross pinched my line.

We didn't go to the South Sea Island with Jo and Garry in Port Denaru.

Ross And I fronted up to get tender tickets and ran into Mathew and Mark (matmar) When we got ashore we decided to share a Taxi, and headed off to the Garden Of The Sleeping Giant.

'Garden of the sleeping Giant, founded by Raymond Burr in 1977 to house

his own Orchids. The garden now displays Fiji's largest Orchid collection.'

When we arrived, we went for a walk around the gardens and viewed the Orchids that were in bllom that time of year. If you are an Orchid fan you will be in Orchid Heaven (thats me:D) It cost $12.00F per person to get in. The Taxi driver waited for us while we took our time around the

Gardens.

Next stop.. was a local village, after we bought a few trinkets from the locals, one of the women gave us a tour of the village.

Back to Port Denaru, On the way back we stopped at an Indian Temple, but we didnt get out and have a look, we continued on to Nadi. Most of the shops were closed as it was a public holiday.... so ont to Port Denaru.

Through the Golf course... very beautiful... the road in and out of Port D were full of pot holes and quite rough after the flood earlier this year.

When we got back we stopped in at Mamma's Pizza's and ordered two huge Pizza between us, good value and a yummy pizza. Jo and Garry cought up with us here and had a coffee with us, then we went and did a little shopping. Went into the supermaket and had a look at the alcohol,

$135 for 750ml of Jim Beam. Not the place to buy .

Back to the ship on the tender for sail away...........

Had a great day, not too hot.

Cheers Lesley

WOW! These pic's are absolutely awesome. I love the way you guys have put this all togethor, it should be an ad campaign for the Fijian Jewels cruise! It is totally fantastic.

We leave for Sydney tomorrow. we can't wait.

Thanks so much for all your feedback and up dates. I have loved them so much and had many a laugh. As I think I mentioned in a previous post, you should be a writer (maybe a hoiday journalist) Joanne.

Cheers

Thanks for the great review Jo,

I can see that you are the folk

I like to cruise with...

go with the flow,

turn a problem into a positive,

live for today and ,

enjoy the adventure of being aboard.

Cruising ,and travel, are not always what the glossy brochures depict,

so we have have to look to ourselves to make the most of it.

Getting there.... here is a bit more of my review .... that is if anyone is still reading...

After 3 port days I was well and truly happy that we now had another sea day…. Now I just can’t quite remember what we did today but I have decided to continue with our next port which is vila … and seeing we ended up the added bonus of have another 4 sea days in a row I will then cover the activities on the boat…

Vila…

Woke up and turned on the Tv straight away to see whether or not we were heading to land… also if you want to hear the captains announcements in your cabin you need to have bridge cam on the TV…. Only important announcements like swine flu get announced straight into your cabin… by the look of it Vanuatu was welcoming us with open arms…

As we docked the market stalls were all setting up to the left and to the right of the dock was where you assembled for the shore tours…. Today we were going to be adventurous and we were doing the Abseiling at the Mele Cascade falls…

There were about 12 of us being shuffled into the minivan for the trip to the falls…. There was Garry, myself and a bus full of young ones..…. Yes on this tour we were the oldies LOL…..

The trip out to the falls was once again informative… and that was just listening to the young ones giving their life stories to who ever wanted to listen in the van… you could see the driver point to something and occasionally you could hear what he was saying…. I did hear one thing…. That there was the village where he lived LOL…. South pacific drivers like telling you stuff like that LOL.

We finally arrived at the falls where the first thing you are given are the disclaimer forms to fill out saying that we absolve the company of any liability if we were to fall down the cliff and kill ourselves… Once that was done we were taken to our harnesses and shown how to put them on…. We then had about a 20 minute walk up to the top of the falls ready for our descent… one way or another !!!

The walk was quite a challenge… and to think I piked out of the climb to the top of the hill at Dravuni….. during the steeper ascents they would stop and let us have a breather… we had someone in front to lead us and someone behind making sure no one got left behind…. About half way we stopped for a drink of water a fantastic view of the irririki Island and the ship in the distance…. It is always amazing to be somewhere and then to look in the distance and see home! She always looks so magnificent. It always takes my breath away…. They also took photo’s along the way… as you can imagine you cannot take anything with you that can’t get wet…. So they take lots of shots then sell them back to you at the end…

Once at the top you do a practice abseil off a very small cliff, we were given instructions and demonstration by one of the islanders which was good but only if you could understand anything that he said… you could pick up a few words and just followed his actions…… well you are always attached to a safety rope so you hope that will save you if you make a mistake… we all did a practice which actually wasn’t too bad….. I will never forget the first time I went over… I had hold of the ropes knuckles turning white and was ready to go…. Couldn’t understand why I was not going anywhere…. Until I realized that I had to let go of the rope behind me so I could slide down the rope…….the worst part of that was trying to get back up to the top climbing through a fast waterfall just hanging onto rope to help you up….

Then it was time for the big one… one by one you watch the faces of the others as they slowly disappeared over the side of the cliff… again abseiling is not that difficult as long you stay the right position… the only parts I found harder was when you were actually abseiled through the fall and the force of the water on you was a bit daunting… but if you are clever you abseil to the side and not right down the middle of it…. At times they would get you to stop for a photo opportunity by one of the islanders perched on the rocks on the way down…. Now they didn’t tell you what to do when you get to the bottom…. There was I was nearing the pool at the end of the waterfall….. water splashing allover my face from the falls…. Starting to panic a little …. The others sitting on the rocks laughing at my unceremonious finish…. I could hear everyone yelling “go left”, “go left” ….. I was!! Why were they still yelling at me….. damn I wish I would learn the difference between my left and right….. so no matter how much I tried I just couldn’t get over to the right …… and it was only because the poor fellow was trying to get my photo…… there I was dangling, hanging onto the rope for dear life… copping the brunt of the falls on top of me…. Yelling out how do I get down from here…… and someone yelled out….”stand up”…… oh I was in only waist high water and all I had to do was walk over to the guide to take my ropes off …. Yes it was a great show for anyone sitting on the rocks watching the next person come down with similar predicaments… well I was probably the funniest lol

From that position we could walk around and get some great views of the falls…. I just wish we had our own camera with us… shame the water proof bag did not work at south sea island…

I strongly recommend going to the falls in vila … whether or not you abseil …. They are just fantastic…

We really enjoyed the abseiling it was safe and fun… and it gives you a good yarn to tell….

On the way back to the ship we asked the driver if he could drop us off in the town at Vila…. This is where we went to the second most popular tourist spot in all of vila… Fung Kuei duty free… as we thought, everyone was there… we ran into all our cruising buddies ..… everyone was snapping up the alcohol which was just so cheap… overwhelmed by the variety we just bought 4 bottles of Johnny walker red… 1.125ltr for $20each… you just wanted to sit there and drink the bottle just so you could buy another one…

You should have seen the back room full of all the bags ready and waiting to be delivered back to the ship…. That place must make so much money when we are in port… it would take something a lot worst than swine flu to knock back a ship and the amount of money that was spent in that shop on that day…

My dear sweet husband felt sorry for me and bought me a new camera …. This time water proof, drop proof and probably idiot proof…

We then slowly walked back up the town calling into a few of the shops… buying a couple of T shirts and souvenirs…. By the time we got to the top of the street we were well and truly ready to head back to the ship… we were happy to part with $10 for a taxi driver to take us back to the ship straight away… even though we walked past a couple of vans with other passengers willing us to get on so they would fill them up head back to the ship themselves….. with 78% unemployment we were happy to contribute to the economy.

Once back at the wharf we strolled past the markets… buying a couple of extra things…. Dropped some money into Chrissy’s little bag and headed back onto the ship…

By the time it came to sail away night had fallen…. This time we were up the front of the boat … There was lots of horn blowing , Aussie Aussie Aussie and lots of cheering from the islanders as we pulled away from the wharf… there was a bit more horn blowing after that … but I think that was because of the kamikaze boats with no lights zooming across our path….

By hook or by crook tonight was going to be island night…. The captain said that he would try to avoid the rain …… But it was cold up there… it was pretty windy a little rocky but that didn’t stop the crowd from having a great time…

Jo & Garry

You guys are doing a wonderful review here and the youtube video is great. Can't wait to receive that parcel in the post.

We had a great BBQ down at Hamilton Northshore Park yesterday evening, met up with a crowd of about 25-30 others who were on the Syd-Bris sector of our cruise. We watched the Dawn Princess sail out of drydock across to Portside but it was way too late for us to hang around for sailaway.

Keep up the great work.

PS Have you booked that next cruise yet?
