Hardangerfjord or Flam Railways

Recommended Posts

Hej, hej,

in preperation to our BOUDICCA-cruise with a call in Bergen:

would you choose

a trip with the Flam-Railways

or

a trip to Hardangerfjord???

We have never been in this corner of the World...

so any comment most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

HeinBloed

I think Flamm is quite a distance from Bergen and wonder if it is worth the drive. It is a nice trainride either up or down to Myrdal with stop at a waterfall, but only for about 40 minutes.

It will depend what more you wanto to do that day.

If you donot sail other fjords I would suggest to do the Hardangerfjord.

Also remember Bergen is a nice (often rainy!) city, where you can take the funiculair up the mountain.

I have photos online of our Norway cruise on Century of May 07.

Dank u wel for the rope-car suggestion.

I just checked that our ship will leave Bergen at 23.00 hrs and the rope-car is available until 21.00 hrs. So we might have a chance to go later to the place after our excursion in one of the fjords.

I would recommend the Fløibanen, since it's much closer to town. It's a short walk from the center of Bergen, so if you're already in the area to see the Bryggen waterfront and the fish market, it's only a few blocks away. The cable car is a few km from the main tourist area, so it might be harder to get to.

PS - I agree that if you're not doing any ports in the fjords, you should go with the Hardangerfjord trip. It would be a shame to visit the west coast of Norway and not sail one of the fjords. However, if the trip to Flåm is by boat rather than by bus (there are a few express ferries), I would vote for that one, because I think Sognefjord is prettier (The Nærøyfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord before Flåm that leads to Gudvangen, is one of the two fjords listed as a UNESCO world heritage site).

I never asked again...

No wonder that I am more confused than before:

there are two options:

and

What's better???

We only did the Floybanen, which gives a great view over the city.

As mentioned it is walking distance in the city.

Or if you are too tired, this might be another option. It doesnot go all the way up, but about halfway the mountain and part of the city.

I cannot tell you about the other.
