May is a great month to go. We have been three times in May and the weather was perfect. I really liked the Princess Rome to Venice or Venice to Rome iteneraries because you can add days in Rome And Venice. There is also only one sea day so you have a lot of really great ports. You really need to read a lot of trip reports to see which ports interest you. Most cruise lines are good. Just decide which ports you really want to see and then find a cruise that goes to most of them.

You look like you would know.We also like to squeeze in as many ports as possible.Just trying to decide which places we want to go the most. We would like to get Italy and France and and then it doesn't matter. Do you book your excursions from a private tour company? We usually like those better , but this will be our first trip to Europe so I want to gather all the info I can.

We always do the ports on our own. You are starting early which is real good so you will have plenty of time to study the ports. There is so much info on these boards. Since this is your first time to Europe you will probaply want to use mostly private tours with your roll call. Some of the ports are real easy to go by yourself. The hardest part will be deciding on a cruise!

I was on a western Mediterranean cruise in may of this year and the weather was absolutely fantastic! 19 degrees celsius every morning, sunny everyday, around 25 during the day. We were supposed to have rain according to the forecasts but we didn't get any. Not even a cloudy day. I suppose later in the summer (june july august) is too hot for tours in Italy. Since the tours mostly take place between 10 and 3, it can be a problem. Florence for instance is a very hot and humid city and your visit can be painful if the temperature goes over 30 degrees celcius.

What we did was Malta, Naples, Rome (Civitavecchia), Florence (Livorno) and Cannes, with NCL on the Norwegian Gem.

You are really the one who can tell what you want to see and what you're not interested in, just take a look at all the itineraries available when you plan to go and read about the ports and cruise lines on the net. I suppose making a short list of must-sees beforehand would be a good idea too!

I found an itinerary on rcl that goes to that covers the ports we would like to see for our first time. It leaves Barcelona villefranche ,France ,Rome,Naples ,Corfu ,Split and ends in Venice. It sound like a good one. It is on Splendour of the Seas, this would be our first on RCL which we have been wanting to try. Hope the weather is nice in April too.

Opinions you get on this board are necessarily limited to the poster's personal experiences. For example, you can check out our Med cruises at

http://www.elite.net/~thehalls/med.html

and

http://www.elite.net/~thehalls/holyland.html

But for the kind of general question you are asking, absolutely the best advice I can give you is to find a good local Travel Agent who is a CLIA Accredited Cruise Counselor (look for the agent's diploma on the wall, not just an agency sticker). Ask your friends and co-workers for a recommendation. The service is entirely free to you. ACC's are trained to find the very best cruise for you, after learning your personal situation and preferences, and work hard to get you the very best rate.

Once you have gotten the basic information and know more about all the various options available, you can return to this board with specific questions like, "Which Greek isles have the best beaches?" or "What are the main attractions of Marseille?"

HAVE A GREAT CRUISE!

As others said May is great as weather will not yet be hot and the summer tourist season won't have started so prices and airfare will still be cheaper.

I'd suggest you take a look at a web site like this http://www.europeportreviews.com/ and make a list of the ports you most want to visit and from that find the ship/schedule that matches. Some make the ship a priority but in the Med I think the Ports should be the priority and you should find the cruise/schedule that sail to the most ports you want to visit. All the major cruise lines have very interactive sites that show the ships schedule/ports/tour offerings to help. Many of the internet cruise agencys also have nice tools that allow you to pick dates or ports and list all available cruises.

All of us have our favorites but they may be materially different then yours ;)

Happy planning!
