jlacasci Posted June 17, 2009 #1 Share Posted June 17, 2009 Hi, We are leaving for our first cruise to Alaska, Inside passage on Princess Golden Princess leaving on July 11 - 18. Stops are Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Victoria BC. My research of the best excursions will follow in a moment... since I found this forum I wanted to run it by you good folks that have done some of these. It may be important to note that I'm a professional photographer and will have some very nice gear with me. Juneau: Helicopter with Dogsled on the Glacier $579.00/pp Skagway: Glacier point wilderness safari $254.00/pp Ketchican: Misty Fjords wilderness tour cruise and fly $365.00/pp BC: nothing yet, not there much time at all My goal would be photographic opportunities including wildlife. There are sooooo many options for excursions, it's a bit overwhelming. Thanks, Joe
Budget Queen Posted June 17, 2009 #2 Share Posted June 17, 2009 If wildlife is truely your priority then I would consider getting to Anan instead of your Ketchikan choice.

What tour/excursion is possible to take from Ketchikan to go to AnAn? Thanks
jlacasci Posted June 17, 2009 Author #4 Share Posted June 17, 2009 Thanks for the info... I just went on-line and did a search on Anan and found a company that flies to Anan from Ketchican. I will call them later and make sure that I can combine a Misty Fjords with a good bet on bear photos for around the same price of $365/pp based on 2 people. It's 9:20am EST where I am so I will wait a few hours before I call. I found these guys by going to the Ketchican visitors site. http://www.visit-ketchikan.com http://www.alaskaseaplanetours.com thanks for the info, what about our other choices? Anan is all about bears, and just about a 100% "bet". For me, I would definately do this way before a dog sledding, (which, if you don't know- you will be with a group of 4 people and do not drive your own sled) having done both. Budget Queen Posted June 17, 2009 #6 Share Posted June 17, 2009 What tour/excursion is possible to take from Ketchikan to go to AnAn?Thanks Independent floatplane vendors have permits for Anan.
jlacasci Posted June 17, 2009 Author #7 Share Posted June 17, 2009 Okay, I found another company that does fly you to Anan, cost is a bit more. There is a limited number of permits per day (just 64). No guides, but a park ranger meets you and walks you to the observatory for 1.5 - 2 hours of viewing depending on flying time. The price is aroudn 475.00 per person. But... I've read that there is little bear activity in mid July... Is this true of Anan as well? Or, is it reasonable to expect plenty of bears in Anan? jlacasci Posted June 17, 2009 Author #8 Share Posted June 17, 2009 I've been in contact with two companies that have permits to fly to Anan and both companies have no permits left for July 16. So, it looks like I am out of luck for the Anan trip. So, back to my original post... Given the excursions I've selected in my original post, do you folks that have been agree that this is the best of the best right now? jlacasci Posted June 18, 2009 Author #9 Share Posted June 18, 2009 We were able to book a bear tour from the cruise in Juneau, I'm not sure where this one goes (probably not Anan, but it is limited by permit). Again, we've never been to Alaska and really wanted some GREAT excursions. We'd love to have done the bearing sea crab boat tour but it conflicts with others. Based on what I've read and what folks have said here so far this is what we selected to do... Your opinions matter to us, so pipe in please ;-) Thank you very much!!!
