jstducky Posted June 18, 2009 #1 Share Posted June 18, 2009 does anyone happen to know.. if i rent a car in corfu, and they meet me at the port entrance... how far is that actually from where the ship docks? if it's far, is there a free shuttle to take passengers from the ship to the port entrance? i've heard that there's a shuttle into corfu town provided by some cruise lines... i'm assuming that means that paid shuttle is from the port entrance actually into town, right? Rare Hlitner Posted June 18, 2009 #2 Share Posted June 18, 2009 The port is actually located right on the edge of town and you can walk into town in about 15 min. When we were there in April we reserved rental cars with 2 companies ( I am not going to mention names) since we knew that rental car companies here are notoriously lax. Well, sure enough, when we arrived neither company showed-up at the port (one of them was a major car rental company). So, we rented from a small local company (we do not even remember their name) who had cars at the port, and they did not even ask for a credit card (we paid cash). There were several companies represented at the port..but being Greece you never seem to know who will be working at any time. The car rental companies do work out of the port terminal building which is at the entrance and they have a large parking lot to store the cars. On our cruise, we were docked quite a distance from the terminal, but the port authority provided free shuttle service (fast and efficient). You can expect to get a car for less than $50, assuming you can drive a stick (automatics are very difficult to find in many parts of Europe). I suggest you shop around on the internet using Google (this can find you many of the smaller local companies that are usually cheaper than the majors) and reserve a car. Than, if they fail to show...you should be able to find somebody else to rent you car. This is what makes independent travel so much fun :) Hank
PenelopeCorelli Posted June 19, 2009 #3 Share Posted June 19, 2009 Inter Corfu rentals said they will have our car - which we already paid a deposit on - waiting for us at 9am. Hopefully, this is the case!:) (I'm bringing a copy of all our confirmation letters.)
susiesan Posted June 19, 2009 #4 Share Posted June 19, 2009 We rented from Sunrise Car Rental on the internet. I did not put up a deposit. We arrived at 9:00 am and the lady had a car for us at the parking lot for the port, filled in the contract, we paid 35 euros cash. She told us to just leave it in the parking lot for the port with the keys under the floormat. She said put enough gas in it to bring it up to full. She did not take any credit card info so we could have stiffed Sunrise on the gas (but we didn't). We drove off in one direction in the morning and were passing by the port at lunchtime, so we parked the car, had lunch on the ship, then came back to the car and drove off in the other direction after lunch. We came back to the ship and left the car in the lot like we were supposed to. Very laid back experience. WeBeCruisinNow Posted June 21, 2009 #5 Share Posted June 21, 2009 Hi jstducky ..... This request has nothing to do with this site, but I was hoping you could help me. Read your Princess Review on the British Isles and found your private Liverpool tour to be just what we're looking for. My questions to you .... how did you arrange this tour? Will I need to gather additional passengers to ride on a specific size vehicle? So far, we are 4, but I'm sure we can gather whatever amount required. We will be in Liverpool (8am - 6pm) on Aug. 14, 2009. Touring Liverpool, as well as Conwy and Chester sound perfect. At your earliest convenience, can you provide any information, which you believe is helpful? email: hernandobeachcomber at gmail dot com Thank you in advance for taking the time. Several rental car companies were already full and I've heard that some don't show up.

I also have made a reservation with Corfu Sunshine. It is good to know that they are reliable. I decided to go with them because they had the best price and they also were the most responsive. I'm glad it seems like I made the right choice.
nparmelee Posted June 22, 2009 #9 Share Posted June 22, 2009 We used Corfu Sunshine last month, they were waiting for us with a sign. You have the option of paying with cash with them, this made the paperwork pretty much nil. She supplied us with a map and some local info. The port does have a shuttle that takes you to the entrance, it ran pretty regularly.
dbh62ark Posted June 22, 2009 #10 Share Posted June 22, 2009 I was just there earlier this month and had a great day on Corfu. We rented a car right outside the cruise terminal for 50 Euros for the day plus 10 Euros for fuel. We went to the Paleokastritsa beach, and it was very nice. Then we drove up to the Bella Vista. We then drove north and basically all the way around the island. We wanted to allow time in the old section of Corfu before we returned to the ship, so we missed the palace. We also stopped at two other seaside villages for gelati, etc. and found the island to be very scenic. The old town was very nice too. Renting a car was very easy and inexpensive. The only issue we had was that we had some issues finding the car park for the old town but ended up parallel parked near the old fort within easy walking distance of town. Our map for the driving tour was provided by the rental car agent at the port. If I can answer any other questions, I'll be glad to in the next few days (after that I'm returning to my Facebook addiction because we don't have another cruise booked but can be found there as Donna Brown Hill).
