mom23guys Posted June 30, 2009 #1 Share Posted June 30, 2009 We're thinking of doing the Chilkoot Yukon Tour in Skagway. I noticed there is a 7:30 Train first and 8:30 Bus first option. I'm wondering does the train pick up cruise passengers first and then the others at the depot? If that is the case is it more difficult to find good seats if you don't book through the cruise line? Is it better to do the train or bus first?
luvlake Posted June 30, 2009 #2 Share Posted June 30, 2009 Chilkoot has it's own railroad car and they will take you to it.:)
dustyroad Posted June 30, 2009 #3 Share Posted June 30, 2009 i know you will really enjoy this tour. i took it in may ( the 7:30 train up )and it was a wonderful way to spend the day in skagway. i had plenty of time afterwards to browse the shops and get to the ship on time for our departure. there are plenty of seats so dont worry about that. just remember if you are going up the mt set on the left side for the best viewing and going down set on the right side. also you can go out to the platform and get fabulous shots and views. enjoy your day. dusty1117 Posted June 30, 2009 #4 Share Posted June 30, 2009 Take the 7.5 hour trip. We did it last week and loved it. Got some great pictures. We were picked up outside of where Sapphire was docked. There were 2 buses and we didn't have to wait. We were driven to the train and had our own cars. By bus you stop at a photo stop, Carcross (don't forget to get your passport stamped with Carcross and bear or moose stamp. You can get ice cream drink, trickets at the general store. Went for their included lunch (bbq chicken, potato, cole slaw). Lunch was good and saw puppies, dogs & horses. Museum full of stuffed animals. We also stopped at Welcome to Alaska sign. Bus let's you off at main Skagway street if you want or back at ship.
S.S.Oceanlover Posted July 1, 2009 #5 Share Posted July 1, 2009 our ship gets in at 7am and the train leaves at 7:30am. Will we have enough time to get there? We are on the Diamond Princess Sept 16th. I don't want to spend the money and miss the excursion. Bill

They are taking passengers from the Diamond Princess on excursions every week right now, and they know exactly which ones you can make with that docking time. jenjens1023 Posted July 2, 2009 #8 Share Posted July 2, 2009 The tour leaves the dock at 7:30. You are taken to Chilkoot's own station and the train leaves there around 8:00. We got in line to disembark (the Diamond) at 645 and were the first ones off the ship at 7:00. Walked to the end of the pier and waited till our guide showed up at 7:30. There was no problem with the timing. We took the 7.5 hour tour and had time to walk through town after the tour and then enjoyed the hot tub on the ship before sailaway. My 18yo DD ranked this as her favorite excursion on the trip. She spent a lot of time on the platforms between cars taking pictures over the edge. Wish we'd know about getting our passports stamped in Carcross!
