redsoxfan58 Posted June 30, 2009 #1 Share Posted June 30, 2009 Now I really can't wait until Oct. I decided to splurge, for our 28th anniversary and upgrade. It was $600 more but that's only $100 a day so I thought it was worth it. We had an inside cabin on the Empress deck and I was able to get a balcony on the same deck. I thought I'd see what everyone is talking about. You all made drinking your morning coffee on the balcony sound so wonderful. Now I just need to tell my husband who is out of town for a few weeks. I told him I was thinking of upgrading. Well I thought about and then I did it. I'm sure he'll enjoy it!

Sunsetters Posted June 30, 2009 #3 Share Posted June 30, 2009 We did the same thing a couple of weeks ago. January on the Freedom with be our first cruise!! Everytime I read a review or saw pic's of a balcony I thought I could not go without, so we upgraded from a Ocean View to Balcony on the 6th deck. I know we will not regret it!! You sure will!! well your wallet will as you'll want to keep going with balconies LOL. It was just great being able to have room service bring a pot of coffee and 2 cups for DW and I to enjoy on the balcony watching the sun rise. One of the highlites of our balcony. dahkota Posted June 30, 2009 #6 Share Posted June 30, 2009 Before my first cruise, people always told me that there was no need for a balcony (or a window for that matter) because you never spent time in your room. They were right. Who wanted to be in a stuffy room with dead air when they could be out on deck with an ocean breeze? Then, my next trip, I got a balcony anyway. OMG! Coffee in the morning, relax time after lunch, naptime before dinner, after dinner drink, before bed to wind down and be lulled by the sound! My second cruise, I spent about 6 hours a day on the balcony, from sunrise in my pjs at 6AM, to quiet reading time, to get away from the crowd time, to wind down time. I still don't spend any time in my room - when ever I'm in there, unless I'm in the bathroom or asleep, I'm always just passing through on the way to the balcony. It was heaven. And I won't book anything but a balcony anymore. Enjoy your balcony!
eggypann Posted June 30, 2009 #7 Share Posted June 30, 2009 redsoxfan58 - nice going! I know you'll really love it. Unfortunately, my next cruise is OV - but I'm just glad to be going! You should wait and not tell your husband - just surprise him when you get to the room!
valancy1 Posted June 30, 2009 #8 Share Posted June 30, 2009 Congrats. The only way I could get my husband to agree to a cruise was to do the cheapest inside room (he's "FRUGAL" (ahem)) and then the price to upgrade to a balcony was so ridiculously low later on in the process that we did it, and I never once regretted it. We can't wait to cruise again with our next balcony... there really is nothing like it. What I loved most was waking up early (we never sleep late) and going out on the balcony in our jammies and watching us come into port, or out on the open seas and just listening to the breeze and the water and so on. It's a completely different experience than an ocean view room... more "3D" per se. ENJOY YOURSELVES!!

redsoxfan58 Posted June 30, 2009 Author #10 Share Posted June 30, 2009 Thanks everyone for making me feel so good about my splurge. Your right Peg maybe I shouldn't tell the hubby until we get to the room. I think he'll hear the excitement in my voice tonight though when he calls me. I've been depressed about him being away, he's in the Navy. I told him last night I'd probably be happier if we upgraded to a balcony. I was right. I can't wait to be on our balcony in my PJ's drinking coffee.

CCSauceda Posted June 30, 2009 #12 Share Posted June 30, 2009 Hey Redsoxfan, I did the same thing!! My boyfriend and I are going on August 30 on the Splendor for our one year anniversary. He wanted a balcony so bad... One day after we talked about it, I called up the TA and asked about the balcony upgrades and decided to get it too! I'm going to keep it a surprise and think that you should too. Imagine how excited your husband is going to be when he walkes into a BALCONY ROOM!! Congrarts to you guys!! :D
jayscore Posted July 1, 2009 #13 Share Posted July 1, 2009 Oh, my God! Now you've done it! You are about to be spoiled for the rest of your life! Once you experience that balcony, nothing less will do!;) You're going to love it!
Gizzy02 Posted July 1, 2009 #14 Share Posted July 1, 2009 I am sailing on the Dream in Feb 2010 and when I initially brought it up to my husband he was OK w/ the inside cabin price but I went ahead and booked our 1st balcony and didn't tell him. It was $800 more for the four of us (w/our two kids). I figured if you break that down per day, it's not that bad and I HAVE to try the balcony!! We have only had OV cabins before so this will be all new for us. He will find out when we get to our stateroom door...We are not telling our kids about the cruise at all and they will just flip when we walk into our balcony cabin!!! I think you did the right thing and I know it will be worth it. I can't wait!! BUT, I don't think you should tell your husband, if you can hold it back. Think of how shocked & surprised he would be!! Have fun:)
Aussiegrlfl Posted July 1, 2009 #15 Share Posted July 1, 2009 We only travelled OV for our first two cruises because I was trying to be frugal and as I am claustrophobic I tried to be sure it would not be a problem...and I will tell you....I can't complain on Carnival nice big rooms, we have even travelled inside to get great rates as well, but balconies...are amazing........I love to party don't get me wrong, but it is so nice to come onboard have your own private sailaway.....sometimes with your neighbouring cabins, but hey that is fun too....and just go chill out there whenever you want to get away from the "crowd"...it is heaven...my hubby likes to snooze on cruises and I love to read.....so this way he snores inside and I am outside soaking up the sun and reading and thanks to room service enjoying the benefits of being up top on deck......without the hassle......this next cruise as my hubby is out of work we are going inside just to be able to cruise and I will adjust......because any day at sea is better than any day onshore....... Enjoy....you made the right choice.....

I make all the travel arrangements, when I booked our 1st balcony I did not tell my dh, just told him what ship we were going to be on and what ports we were going to. He was rather shocked to see me open the door on "that side" of the hallway! Now he's hooked (my plan all along :D). Breakfast in the morning... snacks in the afternoon.... ;) later at night... redsoxfan58 Posted July 1, 2009 Author #19 Share Posted July 1, 2009 I haven't told my husband, I'm hoping he'll forget that I mentioned upgrading. He just called me and he was really tired and not in the greatest mood so I didn't mention it. Maybe when he comes back to Virginia Beach but I'm going to try to keep it a secret. Hopefully he'll be so happy to see me again after a month he won't care. I really think he'll enjoy it, we have a 19 1/2 foot boat and he loves the ocean. rigldbrg Posted July 1, 2009 #20 Share Posted July 1, 2009 I haven't told my husband Don't! Just open the door to the cabin and surprise him with the view. He'll love it. I've only been on two cruises, one a balcony and one an OV. Like everyone else said, once you experience a balcony cabin you can't go back. I'm sure he'll agree and see the minor cost to upgrade as a great investment.
BlueJacketsFan1 Posted July 1, 2009 #21 Share Posted July 1, 2009 Congrads on your 28th Ann.. My wife and I will be celebrating our 13th on our October cruise. We have only done balcony cabins and can't imagine not having a balcony. So I am sure that you will have a wonderful time on your cruise and on your balcony. Best of luck and happy sailing. WitchyWoman14 Posted July 1, 2009 #23 Share Posted July 1, 2009 Congrats on both your anniversary and your upgrade! I have been in an inside cabin, oceanview, and balcony. The balcony is by far my favorite! I get clausterphobic, so I did not like the inside very well, but if I had to get an inside or not go at all, I would "settle" for the inside. You will love it!!! Have fun!! :p

Gizzy02 Posted July 1, 2009 #25 Share Posted July 1, 2009 Aussiegrlfl, Hey, it is MY Birthday too well I'm on the Dream. Mine is Feb 24th & we'll be docked in Belize that day. The thread is very busy..people babbling all the time. I try to read it every day or so but don't have lots of time for that. Seems like a really nice group going and they have directors for all the different activities that are going to go on for the group only. They will have a big Birthday bash too!! I know that we will do some things with the group but not everything. We will be traveling with our two young boys so we will want to spend some alone "family" time too. Totally different than just traveling w/ my hubby & myself but we don't have anyone to watch our kids SO we will be traveling with our little guys until they grow up & that's fine too, cause we do have a blast together!! Ok, now I'm babbling! HA. Gotta go.. Have a Super day and consider coming along w/our group. I think it will be lots of fun!! Linda:)
