Bobbareeno Posted July 1, 2009 #1 Share Posted July 1, 2009 My wife loves fabric and is very excited that we'll be visiting St Kitts in January 2010. She's wondering whether we should just do a tour of Romney Manor to see the Caribelle Batik factory and gift shop or should we just do one of the other tours that just stops over?? She's worried there won't be enough time to shop if we take one of the other tours. Anyone who's been there and could offer some insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bob
Aplmac Posted July 1, 2009 #2 Share Posted July 1, 2009 Caribelle is a fair distance up the West coast so if you did nothing but head there, shop and return to the ship you'd still see a representative chunk of the island. We bought a U.S.$ 20 per person tour to Brimstone Hill Fortress(just beyond Caribelle) and we stopped in to look at the lovely Batik. The guy waits for you as long as you want(within reason) and then you continue on to do the scenic B.Hill Fortress, anyways. Don't know how much of a shopaholic your wife is, but you do. You may want to make a special custom trip out of this. I didn't spend much time inside looking at the girly stuff (placemats, tablecloths, skirts and blouses, shirts that sorta stuff) -spent most of my time outside in the v.pleasant grounds taking photos! . Bobbareeno Posted July 1, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted July 1, 2009 Thank you. She'd be very interested in taking a tour of the fabric factory and then shopping for fabric. Not clothing necessarily but just the fabric she could purchase and then sew. We may have to book a private tour for ourselves so she can spend some time there. I just don't want to book a private tour and end up spending fifteen minutes at the batik factory and have nothing really to see. Or, I've read elsewhere they sell a lot of the batiks at shops near the cruise terminal. Do they also sell loose fabric at the cruise terminal shops? NCTribeFan Posted July 2, 2009 #4 Share Posted July 2, 2009 We went with Thenford Grey. The gardens at the batik factory were fabulous. I also really enjoyed the tour of the fortress and the later beach stop.
Bobbareeno Posted July 2, 2009 Author #5 Share Posted July 2, 2009 Do they offer batik fabrics for sale right off the bolt??
Bobbareeno Posted July 2, 2009 Author #6 Share Posted July 2, 2009 You can purchase batik at Island Hopper which is located in Basseterre, the capital. The store is on Fort Street right by the clock (Circus). Thank you! My DW will be thrilled :)
Aplmac Posted July 4, 2009 #7 Share Posted July 4, 2009 Do they offer batik fabrics for sale right off the bolt?? If your "Batik" comes off a bolt, it's a print and not the real thing! REAL Batik is a fairly complicated, involved process involving waxing the fabric in parts, dying it -and then boiling out the waxy bits thus making it just about impossible to accomplish by regular industrial means via a production line. ............................................................. When you're in Barbados,too...make your way up to the Earthworks Pottery complex where local Batik artist HENDY has a genuine Batik operation going ...you'll get to see what I'm talking about. Hendy's place is downstairs here...he does demonstrations. When he's done, you also realize why Batik costs what it does because it's not an easy process! . Bobbareeno Posted July 5, 2009 Author #8 Share Posted July 5, 2009 LOL. Thank you again. When I say "bolt" it's only because I have no clue about fabrics. I only know my DW buys quilting fabrics off a bolt at a quilt shop. I figured batik fabric was the same way......guess I was wrong! She's looking forward to the cruise and especially for a trip to see and purchase the batik fabrics on the island. Bob
