elaineb Posted July 3, 2009 #1 Share Posted July 3, 2009 Hello all. I am in the very beginning stages of planning a cruise for Oct 2010. We want to see the Greek Isles, notably Mykonos and Santorini. The only 7 night cruise (cannot due a longer one due to job constraints) is out of Venice. I am thinking of flying our group into Rome and staying 2 nites pre-cruise, then taking the high speed train from Rome to Venice on Saturday morning, the day of our embarkation. Has anyone done this and are the logistics sound? My DH and I went to Italy on our 30th Anniversary (land tour) and absolutely loved Rome. Venice was okay, but crowded with Americans! Also very pricey. We would love to go back to Rome, and I think our co-cruisers would enjoy the many sites in Rome VS Venice. If they want to, they could stay in Venice post tour. The ship is the Norwegian Gem. NCL would not be my first choice, but again, the itinerary is excellent. RCCL ship does Mykonos one week and Santorini the other week - but not on the same week! I would appreciate any comments/suggestions. Thanks.
euro cruiser Posted July 3, 2009 #2 Share Posted July 3, 2009 The Eurostar from Rome to Venice takes four and a half hours. The first one of the day gets to Venice around 11:20, there is another arriving at 1:20 and one at 2:20. I've taken the train, but don't know anything about getting from the train station to the cruise port. Eurostar trains require a reservation, but this can easily be done either on line or once you arrive in Italy.
CintiPam Posted July 3, 2009 #3 Share Posted July 3, 2009 I personally never to want to arrive at my embarkation port the day of embarkation, but at least arrive in Venice the night before your cruise departs.
CathyCruises Posted July 3, 2009 #4 Share Posted July 3, 2009 The train station is actually very close to the cruise port--and Venice is a very small town in reality. You would probably be okay taking the train the day of departure, but why sweat it? Cathy
thinfool Posted July 3, 2009 #5 Share Posted July 3, 2009 You will do fine with that itinerary. Don't worry about missing your ship. Just take an early train from Rome. In reverse, we left Venice at 6am, stopped in Pisa to quickly see the tower, didn't use a hi speed train, and arrived in Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) about 3 pm. Trains are far more predictable than planes or cruise ships. We would follow your plan without hesitation. Enjoy Rome! We didn't get enough of it either (October 08). :)
