renting a car in Skagway

You've got the wrong idea about Skagway. :) It's an 800 person "town", 2 blocks by 20+++, "airport" has no commercial airline service, and a runway is right along the west edge.

Avis is the only major rental, you need to call them directly about van availability. Sourdough the only independent, they have vans. Without mobility limitations, you walk to these locations. Otherwise there is the SMART bus, with nearby drop offs.

We just rented from Avis on our recent cruise. They do have a van and an SUV. We rented the SUV which I believe was a Toyota. It said it seated six but it would have been tight. If you have a party of six or seven the van would be better if it is available the day you are there.

We rented from Avis. Online we made reservations for two cars, but when we got there they offered us a van. It would probably be good to call them directly if the van does not show up online.

As noted, it is not much of a walk to Avis, maybe about 8 or 10 blocks from the pier. However there is a very convenient shuttle bus for a couple of bucks that will drop you half a block from Avis.

Be sure to get Murray's Guide to the Yukon Highway (Google it) as it is THE best way to see the sights every mile along the way.

We loved this drive. Check out our review and pics at http://www.elite.net/~thehalls/alaskaZ.html

Have a GREAT cruise!
