Why book Stingray City trip??

Is Stingray City a closed off area that you need to book a trip for? Why can't you just take a cab there and go in the water yourself? Going to GC in 10 days and wanted to know why everyone talks about booking trips. Thanks.

vic_in_AZ:

"Stingray City" is actually a sandbar out in the Bay where excursion boats take people to get out onto the bar (water depth about 3-4 feet) to interact with the 'rays.

Getting a cab to take you there would be a real adventure in itself!;)

Check out some of the other threads about stingray tours--you'll pick up some really good advice, and a majority of the people who have been there are real enthusiasts about the experience.

Regardless of whom you book with. The 'rays are like puppy dogs, begging for food. Or pigeons in the park feeding off bread crumbs. Whatever. They have absolutely no fear of humans & you can stroke them all you want!
