Anchorage to Whittier transfer question

We are confused with the wording from Princess under the Travel Summary page in My Princess on transfer instructions from Anchorage to Whittier particularly on the time. It says: "The Princess hospitality center is scheduled to be at the Egan Convention Center located in downtown Anchorage at 555 West 5th Avenue. Please check-in for your transfer between 9am and 12pm, no later than noon. Transfers from the hospitality center to Whittier begin departing at 1:00 p.m. Please bring your luggage when checking in for your transfer".

Am I to interpret that the downtown Hospitality center is closed in the afternoon and people can't check in later than noon? Our original plan is to take a 3-hour guided morning tour of Anchorage, take in a nice lunch somewhere then check in at the downtown Hospitality center mid afternoon ready to take the 2-hour bus ride to Whittier (ship leaves at 9:30pm). Sounds to us our morning guided tour is out of the question if we must check in between 9am and 12 noon at the center and get on the 1pm bus. Your thoughts?

We were confused about this as well. I didn't really like the idea of checking in at 9:00am and then waiting around until 1:00pm or later for the bus. We will have already done our touring of Anchorage so really just want to get to the ship. We decided to cancel our Princess transfers and take the train instead. Leaves at 10:00am and gets us to the ship around noon.

We just did this cruise last week and we also took the train from Anchorage to Whittier. We booked it on our own using the Alaskan Railroad web site. Train leaves downtown Anchorage train station about 2 blocks from the 3rd Avenue Anchorage Hilton Hotel.

We happened to have a rental car from Hertz on this trip. We dropped the car at 9:00am at the downtown Hertz location, walked about 7 blocks to the train station and boarded the 10:00am train for Whittier. We dropped all our luggage with the cruise cabin tags at the railroad station Princess luggage drop.

Train got to Whittier about 12:10pm, we walked a few hundred feet to the embarkation building, checked in and were in our cabins by 12:40pm. Luggage showed up at our room about 2 hours later.

Perfect!

Another thing about the train (thanks to another cruise critic poster). If you turn 50 this year, the train ride is free!

I think we're going to take a tour on the way to Whittier instead, but I'm very, very tempted.
