kids1stcruise Posted July 9, 2009 #1 Share Posted July 9, 2009 just wondering --if i buy insurance and a family member gets sick and hospitalized is this covered? when is the latest insurance can be purchased?
firefly333 Posted July 9, 2009 #2 Share Posted July 9, 2009 Depends on what insurance you buy, Carnival now has two different kinds. One is supposed to even cover hurricanes now. If you buy it more than 2 weeks after you booked, then it will not cover a pre-existing condition, so it depends on when you booked and bought the insurance and what someone is sick from. If a family member gets sick and is hospitalized (A) their medical expenses are not covered by your insurance, (B) your cruise cancellation costs are generally covered if YOU have to cancel to stay home to care for that family member. You need to read the particular Policy very carefully RE this coverage, as you may only be covered if you HAVE to stay home to care for them (technically, that might not be the case if they're in a hospital), you might have to have Doctor certification that your presence is required, etc. Cruiseline Insurance can apparently only be purchased up to Final Payment (there may be some exceptions to this); most 3rd party policies can be purchased very close to sailaway. If you purchase CSA Policies within 20 days of sailing you get a 20% discount. Most Policies require purchase w/in 14 days (or so) of Initial Deposit in order to get the "Waiver of pre-Existing conditions" coverage. ken

I see that some of the TravelSafe policies include cancellation coverage if there's a Hurricane Warning issued for your area. I wish Carnival's Berkely Policy would follow the lead set by Princess's Berkely Policy and RCI's Berkely Policy, which include a "Cancel for Any Reason" 75% future Cruise Credit. I'd be happy with that coverage (included in the premium) for Hurricane/Storm situations. ken

The following improved protection will be included in the VPP effective with all bookings made 7/01/09 forward. The eligible reasons for trip cancellation and trip interruption now include a guest’s being involuntarily terminated or laid off by an employer, as long as the guest was employed with that employer for at least one continuous year, and that notification of termination occurs after the guest’s effective date of coverage. Severe Weather Watch/Warning Protection In order to encourage guests to book their vacation during hurricane season as well as to help protect them during other periods of severe weather, Carnival has expanded its Cruise Vacation Protection Plan to include coverage for severe weather watches or warnings. The following improved protection will be included in the VPP effective with all bookings made 7/01/09 forward. The eligible reasons for trip cancellation and trip interruption now include a severe weather watch or warning being issued by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, including its National Weather Service) en route to or at the port of embarkation within 48 hours of a guest’s scheduled departure. In addition, if a guest traveling to the port by common carrier (meaning air, land or sea conveyance licensed to transport passengers for hire, such as an airplane, bus, train, etc.) is delayed due to inclement weather which prevents the guest from reaching their destination and the delay causes them to miss more than 50% of their cruise vacation, they will be refunded up to the total cruise vacation cost
Ken076 Posted July 9, 2009 #7 Share Posted July 9, 2009 firefly - I'd say this makes the Carnival Policy more competitive during Hurricane Season, as I believe only one other company, TravelSafe offers "Hurricane Warning" coverage. I checked and Carnival hasn't yet updated their on-line Policy with this coverage. Good "find" !!!!!! ken
BlueJacketsFan1 Posted July 9, 2009 #8 Share Posted July 9, 2009 I am sure alot of the Ins. companies are a little different from each other. We have always use Berkley Ins., our TA told us it covers a little bit more than Carnivals Ins. Just check some different companies and see what you think.
