We're thinking of booking the 1/2/10 sailing of the Freedom. I'lll be traveling with a 22yr old and an 18 yr. old. We were wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to do in San Juan? The ship arrives at 5pm and stays to about midnight.

The segway tour comes highly recommended! It was one of the highlights of our 14 day honeymoon cruise in January. Check out Jose of Segwaytourspr.com i believe it is, or you can read more on the PR ports of call board. Our ship arrived early due to a medical emergency and Jose re-arranged our appointment to fit our new schedule. They give you a training crash course before you leave, and that time is not included in the tour time. The best part is, Jose will take your camera and take pictures of you on the segways in the greatest spots. Some of best pictures together came from this tour :D

If you are traveling with a 22 and 18 yr old - I would tour the fort with them (just walk there from the port....only a few dollars to get in) and then they will want to check out Carlos and Charlies and/or the casino....

If you really want to see all of the city - take the old city tour. Instead of booking the cruise tour, just walk it yourself. It is hilly, but it is a beautiful walk.

re matj2000

apart from OSJ and it's 2 forts, one of the oldest churches on the 'New World', several plazas, museums and numerous restaurants you could also check out the following when in port:

15mins by Taxi/car - Escambron Beach and nearby Helmet Diving

20mins by Taxi/car - Condado Beach + numerous hotels with casinos

20-30mins by taxi/car - Isla Verde Beach + numerous hotels with casinos

20-30mins by taxi/car - Pinones area with it's ocean view / mangrove wooden boardwalk with bike hire and quiet beaches

30mins by car - Canopy Tour in the forests of Guaynabo

45-60mins by car - El Yunque rainforest and it's numerous trails, also have horse riding, ATV's, zip line and rapelling

45-60mins by car - Luquillo beach and the roadside kiosks

60mins by car - Fajardo Bio Bay + beaches or evening cruise to Vieques Bio Bay

just a few ideas

Thanks for the suggestions. The Segway tour sounds great, but we won't be arriving into port until 5pm. So we need suggestions for the nightime. Has anyone done the night time horseback riding?

San Juan is probably the worst port to visit. It is nothing but an older city with a bunch of stores. Unless you want to see an old fort there is not much else close by.

That's a very subjective opinion. Personally, I loved my visit of Old San Juan. The buildings and architecture and forts were all very interesting to me. I felt safe walking around in the evening [i wouldn't venture down a dark alley- just like any other city]. I think it's nice to be able to experience a port that's different from every other.
