Great Expectations Posted July 13, 2009 #1 Share Posted July 13, 2009 Based upon previous trips, is there any chance to SCUBA dive at any of the stops on the Indian Ocean repositioning cruises, including off the islands in the Andaman Sea? We are on this fall's trip. Second, will the storage space under the beds in a category 2 cabin fit a couple of regular suitcases. This is our first Star Clipper trip and we thank others for all of the helpful information you have provided on this site.
rogerc1944 Posted July 14, 2009 #2 Share Posted July 14, 2009 We're on the same trip and also in a class 2 cabin (341). From what I've been able to find out (not much), there's not a lot of snorkling/diving opportunities. As to storage, there should be adequate room for storage in a class 2 cabin -- especially if you have soft sided luggage (a coupe of carryons, a couple of suitcases, and maybe a laptop). While we haven't been on the Star Clipper before, we have been on its sister ships (the Star Flyer and Royal Clipper). In addition to under the bed type storage, you will have two small closets (one with a few hangers and one with shelves--and a safe). There is also storage in a drawer under the small sofa/chair at the foot of the bed and in the night stand. There are also hooks next to the cabin door. You might want to bring along an over the door type hook for outside the bathroom door. The bathroom also has a fairly roomy medicine cabinet and some hooks on the door (good place to hang a large bathroom kit) and limited storage under the sink. There's also some storage under the desk shelf (there's a 110 outlet hidden there too). If you're a reader, you might want to consider buying an Amazon Kindle plus a buncha of ebooks (there's no place to download more on this trip). If you bring your own laptop, you will still have to pay 12.5 Euros an hour for use of their wifi. If not, you pay the same and use their equipment when working, available and in range. They do have a nice but very limited library on board and passengers often exchange books. Also, be sure to bring along whatever meds you think you might need (asprin, cold mediations, etc.). Easy to find in Europe but may be difficult in more exotic locations and their "sloop shop" has nothing. You have to track down the nurse or whoever on board can dispense so much as an asprin. Great Expectations Posted July 14, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted July 14, 2009 Thanks very much for your helpful note. My wife and I will be travelling in cabin 332 and look forward to meeting you on board. I checked with Star Clippers this morning and was told that there is no SCUBA diving from the ship on this repositioning cruise.
rogerc1944 Posted July 15, 2009 #4 Share Posted July 15, 2009 You're welcome and we'll see you on board. We're going to be in Athens a few days early doing the tourist thing. A Greek friend of ours recommended staying at the Hotel Attelos. Evidently, the hotel offers a nice view of the Acropolis and is convenient to a number of museums, etc. We looked into the hotel being offered by Star Clippers and it appears to be a very nice hotel. However, their charge was based on a per person double occupancy basis which is twice what the hotel charges for the room. The only advantage we could see was the cost of transfers to the ship is included.
