pegdave1 Posted July 16, 2009 #1 Share Posted July 16, 2009 We are planning to travel light for our cruise, carefully planning mix and match outfits plus formal clothes. Because of airline restrictions for carryons, we would like to know if basic toiletries (shaving cream, razors, etc) and moderately priced makeup is available on the ship. We have been on other cruises that sold high end makeup (Lacomme and other high end brands) but no other options. Also, my husband may need some Neosporin type cream for a ongoing medical condition. Also what amenities are available at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal? We are Queens Grill - is there food or drink available? What is the QG lounge like? Is it okay to arrive about 9 am at the terminal? We do not expect to get on the ship then of course.
highcbob Posted July 16, 2009 #2 Share Posted July 16, 2009 Not sure I understand. Why cant you pack the toiletries and the neosporin etc in your checked airline baggage? Surely you are not going to 'carry on' everything onboard the flight? Please dont tell me that.
sfbearcat Posted July 17, 2009 #3 Share Posted July 17, 2009 The items you asked about are for sale thou very limited and are sold in the section of the shops that sells the wines and spirts. They are all the small travel sizes and are not that cheap. The spa does have nice products and your suite will have soaps and shampoos ect but no personal items. Regarding the Brooklyn Terminal grills lounge..this is NOT an airport style lounge..very basic small room with Orange juice/cold water free and a vending machine....I never use it too small, I sit in the large main section and just board with the early groups
pegdave1 Posted July 17, 2009 Author #4 Share Posted July 17, 2009 Thank you for the information. It's just what I needed for planning purposes. Not sure yet how much luggage we are taking. I am planning to "test pack" the most important items, then see what's left for another suitcase. My husband has some lifting limitations right now, so any luggage we take is my responsibility. Jimsgirl Posted July 17, 2009 #5 Share Posted July 17, 2009 The basic soap shampoo etc is provided, not razor. I pack razors, Neosporen, First aid kit and surplus make up in my checked bags, I have to have a wheelchair at airport and for boarding, I have a car to airport, tip a porter to deal with my checked bags at checkin, Same at hotel, and of course at port, and at disembarkation. If you ar willing to pay a tip you can always find a porter, or you can "hire"a trolley from the airport machines. I carry my pills, and small amount of makeup as carryon. {ills in bag and makeup in a plastic bag for inspection at airport. Makeup is sold on board but it is all high end brands and therefore expensive, also the shades carried are limited, my advice is TAKE YOUR OWN. both for brand and shade. Have a great cruise
jax Posted July 17, 2009 #6 Share Posted July 17, 2009 I'm going to try to just do one carry-on case for all my QM2 needs this fall. Hope that I can accomplish this on my first time try at "downsizing." Of course my cruise is only 7 days but it surely would be relief not to have to wrestle with a large piece of luggage at LaGuardia.
dbird Posted July 17, 2009 #7 Share Posted July 17, 2009 I have done airline carry-on only for both my Cunard cruises. I have never had a problem. Most my cosmetics are powder so do not need to fit in the baggie. If you really pay attention to how much of items you use...you will be surprised how little you need for 6 or 7 days. Try buying some samples, enough to fill your bag and use for a week at home.I think you will be amazed. Hubby also ususally has extra room in his baggie for rent ;-) (maybe only take a partial tube of the cream your husband needs) Check the airline regulations, they have loosened up a bit....my contact solution no longer needs to go in the baggie. Have a great trip.
NomDePlume Posted July 17, 2009 #8 Share Posted July 17, 2009 Good news indeed regarding medications. From the TSA's site: http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm Medications, baby formula and food, and breast milk are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint.
pegdave1 Posted July 18, 2009 Author #9 Share Posted July 18, 2009 That's exactly what we are doing including the same airport. One Carry on per person plus one personal item like a purse. I test packed a carry on bag slightly smaller than the maximum allowed and was able to get everything inside, including two formals. I plan to use space bags to reduce the bulk of the clothes a bit, especially for my husbands tux. I weighed the bag and I still have 20 more lbs to work with, some of which will be used for my purse. I plan to do laundry at least once on the ship and again at our hotel. It's a small price to pay for not worrying about lost luggage. Plus when we go back to the states, we would have to collect our bag, go through customs and security again and recheck it. It's not worth it. By mixing and matching outfits, I think it will work out fine. I am going to carry small amounts of makeup, etc in the plastic bag required for security. Thanks for the advice. Thank goodness my husband does not read these boards. I have huge admiration for you in taking just carry on. We take 3 cases, one large holdall type bag, a garment bag and two hand luggage bags. How an earth do you manage with such a small amount. Shoes, cosmetics, toiletries, medicines, hair brushes and straighteners would fill both our carry on's and even that would be tight! Let me know your secret. Sue
southwestie Posted July 19, 2009 #12 Share Posted July 19, 2009 We do as well, 4 large cases, 2 large carry ons, 1 laptop, but then we do get porters to help if needed.
pegdave1 Posted July 23, 2009 Author #13 Share Posted July 23, 2009 Being retired military and a veteran respectively, we are used to careful and light (if necessary) packing. I have packed a lot more for trips and often found I did not use a great deal of what I brought. My carryon is expandable if we buy too many souveniers or something, so we can always check the luggage on the way back if needed. I don't want to lose my formal wear in particular as I always found women's choices either expensive or very limited on ship.
