Joy2theWorld Posted July 19, 2009 #1 Share Posted July 19, 2009 For those who have been on this ship this year, where did you dock? I've read different posts from the past where the Zuiderdam tendered and another post about some dock about 1 mile from town. When we were on the Ryndam, we were right at the main street almost. Himself Posted July 19, 2009 #2 Share Posted July 19, 2009 On kroooz-cams I have seen it docked at the main dock.
Duck Duck Cruise Posted July 19, 2009 #3 Share Posted July 19, 2009 On July 6 we docked at AJ Dock ... no tender...about a 1/4 mile from town.
Joy2theWorld Posted July 19, 2009 Author #4 Share Posted July 19, 2009 Hmm the Juneau city map on their site shows the AJ dock as 1 mile from Franklin Street. I'm really beginning to regret booking a bigger ship. On the Ryndam, we had the prime dock each time.
LVSue Posted July 19, 2009 #5 Share Posted July 19, 2009 The Zuiderdam does indeed dock at the AJ Dock, which is about a mile from the tram/visitor center. There is a shuttle that will take you to the tram, but we are trying to figure out how we can get there fast because we have an Orca tour an hour after we arrive. We too have always been (on the Amsterdam/Volendam, like the Ryndam) right there, so we are having to rethink our plans. Doesn't seem fair since we arrive so late that we have to waste extra time getting to "town."
Duck Duck Cruise Posted July 19, 2009 #6 Share Posted July 19, 2009 There was a bus service available to take you to B or C dock. $3 per person for an all day pass and it ran all day back and forth. Many just walked. No big deal.

It will be the same again this time and now I'll have to worry about adding more time to get back to the ship :(((( I hope this isn't the case in Skagway and Ketchikan as well. I know I felt sorry for the people on the Norwegian ship that was following us around last time because they always got stuck at the furthest dock. I was on her May 23 cruise and you will not tender in Juneau or Skagway or Ketchikan. Have a fabulous cruise! Diane
BeachFan53 Posted July 19, 2009 #9 Share Posted July 19, 2009 No tenders thankfully, last month. We walked TO town, took about 20 minutes along the roadway. Saw folks lining up dockside to pay their $3 to shuttle. After a full afternoon of hiking we saw some of our cruisemates getting on one of the buses heading back to the ship (parked next to tram depot) and we just hopped on with them. No one asked us for tickets or money the 5 minute drive back to the ship, which we would have been happy to pay at that point.
Joy2theWorld Posted July 19, 2009 Author #10 Share Posted July 19, 2009 This is what I was afraid of... Now, I'm thinking I should book the evening whale watch and Mendenhall Glacier visit just so we get taken right back to the ship. However, that one doesn't leave until 4:30, so, I'd hate to go into town and then have to meet back at the boat. That would be a lot of wasted time going back and forth. For those who were on the Zuiderdam this summer, what was your experience like at the other ports? The Ryndam had the best parking spot so to speak at all our stops last time. Duck Duck Cruise Posted July 19, 2009 #11 Share Posted July 19, 2009 In Skagway the Princess ships were back to back against the hillside with the paintings on it and we were on the next dock over. The RCCL ship was at the dock beyond ours. All of the docks there were easy access to town. All about the same distance for walking. Just a couple of blocks. The longshoremen were using some very colorful language while they were tying us up. Hope the wee beasties weren't listening. In Ketchikan we were right at the main dock about one ship away from the rain gauge.
LVSue Posted July 19, 2009 #12 Share Posted July 19, 2009 Actually, as I look at the map of the Skagway port, it almost looks as if the Zuiderdam dock is a little closer to town than the RR ones by the hillside, where I have always docked before.
