Cruises are for people who eat alot of food, right?

Hold on just one minute! I've lost weight on cruises since I can't get enough of the fresh fruit and vegetables and stuff like that. I mean, you don't have to cut up your own fresh carrots! How good is that!

Have you ever lost weight on a cruise? And I don't mean by being sick.

I usually stay about the same because we do a lot of walking, both on and off the ship, to offset the food.

:D Carrotts are a bit high on the glycemic scale..... high sugar veggie. Eat them more moderately than celery or broccoli. :D

I lost 4 pounds on our cruise in May. Between all the walking and the fact that I just couldnt find food that I really enjoyed to eat. Thats not saying the food wasnt good it was just to 'fancy' for me. There were times that I was actually hungry!! I discover the food on the room service menu was more my style so that worked out good the last 3 days.

But I was thrilled to come home and see that I had lost weight!

I gain little weight on a cruise due to all the activity, and the fact that I'm usually on a longer cruise, so I settle in to a routine fairly easily.

But I did lose weight on my Royal Viking cruise to Alaska. It was single-seating dining, and the courses were served slowly enough that there was plenty of time to be satiated before overeating.

I loved that cruise!

I usually gain a few pounds, but it's not the food. It's the sodium in everything. We eat very little salt or sodium rich foods at home (we don't even have a salt shaker) and I find from eating the prepared foods and the flying home, I'm usually up a few pounds. By the next week, they're gone.

I tell all first cruisers this because I know quite a few people who got very upset at cruise weight gain -

Last time I lost 4 lbs and DW lost 2.

It was NOT due to moderation in what we ate! We did, however take stairs rather than elevators 90% of the time and were quite active at the ports.

I wouldn't say that "Cruises are for people who eat a lot of food," although it is true that a lot of food is served on cruises. Rather, I would say that cruises appeal to people who enjoy good food, who enjoy good service, and who enjoy making a good dinner into two hours of pleasant and engaging conversation, much laughter, and a memorable "social event." I have enjoyed many hours at the dinner table, laughing with friends, engaging in deep and meaningful conversations, and enjoying excellent food ... all while on cruises. Some of my best friends in this life I have either met on cruises or have come to know through cruise critic, and then have enjoyed wonderful cruises and many wonderful meals with them.

I wouldn't blame it on the food per se, it's the type of food and how it is prepared. A lot of rich sauces, desserts, etc. I wouldn't say I ate more than I do at home, it was just different types of food...stuff I would normally not eat or avoid at home.

Now...the beverages were another story. ;)THAT is where the weight gain came from. I drink an occasional glass of wine at home, yet on the cruise I indulged my "thirst". :D

No, I haven't lost weight on a cruise. I am pretty diet-conscious at home most of the time, and would feel quite deprived if I couldn't indulge on vacation. My strategy is to do a bit of pre-emptive weight loss ahead of time in order to be able to eat whatever I want without worrying about the scale.

On a HAL cruise I average a 5 pound gain. On RCI I usually lose because the food is mediocre. Here is where the average cruiser may go wrong:

Wine (5 oz.) ......................................125 calories

Vodka, Gin, Rum, Bourbon (1 oz.) 125-135 calories

Bread Pudding (1 cup, no sauce) ........300 calories

Hollandaise Sauce (1/4 cup) ...............265 calories

Tiramisu ............................................400 calories

Creme Brulee .....................................575 calories

Baked Alaska .....................................255 calories

For me, the double desserts are worth it. I justify them by ordering only the fish dishes (of course, there's always the butter sauce...).

Candy <-- loves HAL food!

I lost weight on a week-long cruise when I was doing Weight Watchers. I ate a simple and light breakfast, salad and a few bites of something starchy for lunch, and then enjoyed whatever I liked for dinner in the dining room, within reason (yes, including dessert). Also took the stairs EVERYWHERE and walked a lot in the ports. That said, the past couple of cruises I haven't been so regimented and tended to pick up a coupla pounds in a week. Hey, it's vacation!

And keep in mind, most of those really yummy, fancy drinks onboard have several shots of liquor, multiplying that calorie count, plus high-cal mixers. If you are trying to lose weight but still enjoy the libations, it might be better to stick to beer and wine, where you KNOW what you're getting, calorie-wise.

Dandro, you took the words right out of my mouth!!;):) I don't usually gain weight on a cruise but I take the stairs everywhere, try to stay as active as possible. I also try to be choosy about what I eat, in other words, I eat all the yummy stuff, desserts, etc. that I don't eat at home but in moderation! My downfall is all those wonderful drinks, after all I'm on a cruise, right??:D

Our goal is to maintain the same weight we came onboard with .. generally with the workouts and excursions we feel we are contributing properly toward this objective. However, we watch carefully what we eat ... except bread pudding, volcano cake, martinis etc .... so, we typically fail at our goal. Fortunately, we shed the weight fairly quickly once back home working out every morning and normal diet again.

The assortment of food and beverages and the service really are great. Hence, worrying about it tends to stress us, so we dont.

100% right, and after you just walk it off.

Hi,

None of my family gain weight during our trip and I lost 3 lbs.:) We started our day in the gym. After taking shower, we had our breakfast.

I ate all kinds of food in small portions. I didn't eat snack between meals (not even those delicious pastries from Cova Cafe on X Century. But I had my Creme Brulee everytime they offered. I'm addicted to Brie Cheese now.

we usually stay about the same, maybe up to a three pound gain but that must be the sodium because my feet and hands stay swollen from after the first day. we try to walk, and are much better at smaller meals now than we were when we first started cruising. i remember when we ate every meal offered, every course, plus a midnight buffet EVERY night! wow! now we have been known to even skip lunch sometimes!

I lost weight on our last cruise because I kept getting lost getting back to our room. I walked and walked those halls until I finally saw a landmark and followed it and found our room. You can turn me around and I'm lost. My DH said to drop bread crumbs the next time I leave and come back.

Now Creme Brulee is my favorite if it is made right. Will have to try it next Sept. if they have it on the menu. Then get lost some more to walk it off.:D
