Bay of Biscay

I have finally managed to get my husband to agree to go on a cruise, after 5 years of trying. We haven't been on one before as he was very reluctant as he suffers badly from sea sickness.

We are interested in going on a mediterranean cruise on Royal Carribean Independence of the Seas which sails from from Southampton. But I have heard that it can be very rough going through the Bay of Biscay.

I am worried that if we go and the sea is rough there, I will never get my hubby to go on a ship again.

Can anyone advise me what it is really like?

oh dear, poor thing....it really is a lottery, it can be as smooth as the Med., but it's no good saying it can't be bad. But you're on the largest ship in the world, with stabilizers-a different prospect to the old Channel Ferries, or a trip round the bay in a fishing vessel. Take some pills from the chemist and listen to the Captain's weather forecast. Has he been ill on a large ship before?-jocap.

I've been through the Bay of Biscay twice. Both times it was quite rough.

Try to find a Mediterranean cruise that doesn't cruise out of Southampton, Dover or Harwich.

Is there one sailing from Barcelona, Rome or Venice ?

If you're on the ocean, or ANY large body of water., you cannot guarantee the roughness/smoothness of the ride. Mother Nature will do as she wishes. Even on lakes, it can be rough enough to sink a ship (think the "Great Lakes").

If he's really motion sensitive, he should talk to his doctor and get an Rx for something to help him.

The Bay of Biscay can be quite rough, but there is simply no way anyone can tell what it will be like on your cruise. I've been through it when the seas were 30' and I've been through it when it was almost like glass.

If he's that sensitive get him the Scopolamine patch, they work wonders!

Thankyou all for your ideas. We did want to fly to Palma or somewhere to join the cruise but Royal Caribbean only do 14 day cruises to the med from Southampton, so we don't seem to have a choice.

We wanted Independence of the Seas as we will have our 15 year old son with us so keeping him busy and happy is equally important to us as what we want.

I just know that if we go and there are 30ft waves as one person said, then hubby will never set foot on a ship again.

Anyone any ideas on any other cruise ships that cater for teens as well as Royal Carribean and cruise from Palma or somewhere like that? I feel so lost trying to keep everyone happy! I would be so grateful for any advice from seasoned cruisers.

Thankyou.

There is alot more choice in ships and cruise lines running out of Barcelona than Palma, including Royal Caribbean, Costa, NCL, MSC...all have their merits and a variety of itinerary/cruise length.

Scopolamine patch is not available in the UK due to the side effects. Get Stugeron from the chemists.

I can certainly recommend Stugeron Tablets...I swear by them and always take a pack (or 2) with me on my cruises and have never had a problem - I have also used them on small boat trips and catamaran trips and was fine :D

As other posters have said you just cannot predict mother nature!
