missygirl Posted July 28, 2009 #1 Share Posted July 28, 2009 We arrived back into Seattle on Sunday aboard the Star Princess and we had confirmed cases of swine flu. We departed on Sunday and it was announced on Tuesday that they had people confined to their cabins and if anyone felt sick see the doctor immediately. They said to wash our hands with soap and warm water very often being careful not to touch public areas so even though the cruise went on I would use my shirt to press buttons and carry hand sanitizer to use quite often. It was a little stressful and here I am back home with a cough and not feeling my best this morning. I will write a full review later. Missygirl. Rare TracieABD Posted July 28, 2009 #2 Share Posted July 28, 2009 I hope that you are just really tired from the cruise and not sick. Keep us posted.:(
BruceMuzz Posted July 28, 2009 #3 Share Posted July 28, 2009 Were you surprisd that a cruise ship carrying mostly Americans had cases of Swine Flu? W.H.O. reported this week that the USA has more reported Swine Flu cases than any other country; currently estimated at over 1 million. That tells you that 1 in every 250 or so Americans has Swine Flu. How many Americans were on your cruise? Around 2,000+. By the numbers, you can expect that there were at least 8 American passengers sailing with you who had Swine Flu. You can also expect that if you go to your local shopping mall and walk around a bit, you will pass or meet an infected person every 15 minutes or so, on average. DisneyScrapper Posted July 28, 2009 #4 Share Posted July 28, 2009 DH and I got off the ship the day you were getting on. Did not hear of anyone being sick on our cruise. But I have to tell you that the Jet Lag hit us really hard this trip so much more than our 2 previous Alaskan Cruises. Hope you fell better soon. caribill Posted July 28, 2009 #6 Share Posted July 28, 2009 Were you surprisd that a cruise ship carrying mostly Americans had cases of Swine Flu? W.H.O. reported this week that the USA has more reported Swine Flu cases than any other country; currently estimated at over 1 million. That's 1 million total, not currently with the flu. That tells you that 1 in every 250 or so Americans has or previously had Swine Flu. How many Americans were on your cruise? Around 2,000+. By the numbers, you can expect that there were at least 8 American passengers sailing with you who had now or in the past Swine Flu. You can also expect that if you go to your local shopping mall and walk around a bit, you will pass or meet an infected person or one previously infected every 15 minutes or so, on average. Ah, the fun of statistics.
geopa Posted July 28, 2009 #7 Share Posted July 28, 2009 We were also on the Star Princess that week. We heard the announcement about the swine flu, funny thing was it was made before everyone was back on board , never heard about it again over the PA system and it never made it to the Patter. I really wonder if it was actually H1N1 (swine flu), the quick 15 min test that Doctor offices and hospital laboratories are using are not specific for that strain alone, just Influenza A or B (H1N1 is a strain of Influenza type A, there are many other strains that also type A) The only way to test for H1N1 is real time PCR, something that state health laboratories and large reference labs have access to ( I'm certain that they didn't have access to PCR in the ships infirmary) My guess is that a few people tested positive for Influenza A and they just assumed it was H1N1 since we are outside of our "normal" influenza season. mek Posted July 28, 2009 #9 Share Posted July 28, 2009 Well, I had the regular old garden variety flu last week for a couple of days here at home. No sore throat or cough, just fever and aches. Staying away from other people is the best way to stop the spread of any flu. Like mom always told you, bed, rest, and chicken soup.
judyfssw Posted July 28, 2009 #10 Share Posted July 28, 2009 Actually, our room steward told us that a few of the crew had the flu and that was all it was. I heard the announcement but nothing was really done extra on the ship.
