Sherman Oaks Posted August 11, 2009 #4 Share Posted August 11, 2009 Just for your information. Each ship cost that amount to install while in dry dock. IMO a terrible waste of money. The only ship I've been on with it is the Splendor. The sound was bad, the entire concept is flawed. Marketing geek speak..."Let's take an area that people like to gather and socialize, have fun with other cruisers and turn it into a 2nd rate theater showing movies that folks have already seen, just so they can sit and stare at a stupid screen just like they do at home" "Hey honey... ain't this fun? LOL!" "Brilliant!" "Brilliant!" "Yes very Brilliant! AND we can charge for popcorn!" Can you tell I think it sucks?:)

They should have just added a bigger water slide!!!! Come out the funnel or something !!!!!
DanJ Posted August 11, 2009 #6 Share Posted August 11, 2009 I loved the big screen on the Caribbean Princess. We watched the NFL play-offs up there last year, as well as several movies that, although were second run, were still new to us. The popcorn was free though LOL. Scott_F Posted August 11, 2009 #7 Share Posted August 11, 2009 I'll get to experience Conquest's in a few weeks. Not that interested from the get-go, but watching NFL would definitely pique my curiosity.
BlueC5Kitten Posted August 11, 2009 #8 Share Posted August 11, 2009 I agree...not big on taking in movies on the screen on the ship; however, it is indeed handy for watching football playoffs with an energetic crowd!
Cruisin'Karl Posted August 11, 2009 #9 Share Posted August 11, 2009 Taking the New Years Cruise on the Freedom this year (after having a blast on the oldie-but-goodie Holiday out of Mobile last year at the same time). Would LOVE to see some of the Bowl Games on the Freedom's big screen.
ehfl Posted August 11, 2009 #10 Share Posted August 11, 2009 I agree that it's not really the best use of space. Yes, I know that showing movies is cheap, and they can cut back on production show costs. But I don't want to watch 2nd rate movies or sports while on vacation. People who want to watch a movie on board, probably bring their own. Can you imagine if they gave everyone a book to read and said, here, this is your book for the cruise? If this wouldn't work for books, why do they think that 3000 people want to watch the same movie at the same time?
BlueJacketsFan1 Posted August 11, 2009 #11 Share Posted August 11, 2009 Now I have to do is finally win the lottery and I can get one for the backyard. Thanks for the great idea, to bad the odds are so bad on winning that damn lottery.
breezy1200 Posted August 11, 2009 #12 Share Posted August 11, 2009 Last August on the Splendor, my party of seven enjoyed meeting every morning for breakfast on the Lido and watching CNN on the big screen.

If this wouldn't work for books, why do they think that 3000 people want to watch the same movie at the same time? Well, they don't really expect 3000 people to want to all do the same anything at the same time on the cruise (even though it always seems like they all want breakfast at the same time LOL). Back to the Caribbean Princess, there were a few nights where they did show what was going on in the main show lounge up on the big screen outside. Might not be something Carnival does as Carnival usually makes their main show theater big enough for everybody who wants to see a show to get in in 2 seatings. But the point being that in 3 Princess cruises, 1 with the screen and 2 without, it didn't look like they cut back on production shows. It's just another option for people. boaterette Posted August 11, 2009 #15 Share Posted August 11, 2009 total waste of money IMHO. I don't cruise to watch movies. I can see them at home. And they just make noise. Bah humbug.

Get people out drinking and dancing on deck at night. 1.7 M is a big price tag - too much IMO.

I have been on 5 cruises without the Seaside Theater and 1 cruise with it and they had an extra production show one the ship with the seaside theater, so they don't cut back on the production shows with the ships that have the Seaside Theater. luv2cruz66 Posted August 11, 2009 #20 Share Posted August 11, 2009 IMHO it has great possibilities but it is not being used to its real potential. Show me a good concert, a "new" movie, a major sporting event etc. On the Destiny last week they kept showing the Hairy Chest Contest on the big screen over and over. I mean how many times do I have to "re" watch that? Is once not enough??
