Hurricane Expert Posted August 12, 2009 #3 Share Posted August 12, 2009 Be careful with the "spaghetti plots".....most people look at them and just pick the track in the middle. I usually only look at two or three of the most reliable ones. This first system is only forecast to have modest development, it's the next one that we really need to watch. jrmutley Posted August 12, 2009 #5 Share Posted August 12, 2009 OK...so when I booked my early saver at a fantastic rate back in January for an August 17th cruise, I thought ehhh roll the dice. Now that we are a few short days away, and I see that we have a storm out there, how about some words of wisdom for this first time cruiser? We are going to Key West and Nassau out of Jacksonville. What are the chances of REALLY crappy weather. Even if we don't see any bad weather, what are the chances of some pretty rough seas? Any other comments? There are four of us...wife, me and two boys (10 & 8). I was originally just planning on taking ginger supplements as none of us seem to be really prone to motion sickness. But, this is making me rethink that. Any advice would be appreciated.

yst347 Posted August 12, 2009 #7 Share Posted August 12, 2009 If the storm follows its current projected track it will have zero effect on you. That doesn't mean you may or may not have rough seas. It just means that TD2 won't be the perp.
parrotthead Posted August 12, 2009 #8 Share Posted August 12, 2009 You hit the proverbial nail on the head...don't worry. Captain will keep you as far away from a storm as possible. This is right, the Captain will not sail that ship into harms way. It will be an adventure. Just remember that travel is unpredictable, so if the Captain says "We will be going to (Port X) instead of (the one that was scheduled)" remember he is doing it for safety. And go with the flow. We sail a lot of times in Hurricane season. We dont mind the adventure. (hey last year IKE chased us all the way across the Gulf, and back to Dallas) Just remember, as a Great SongWriter says "You cant reason with Hurricane Season" Enjoy your cruise. Hurricane Expert Posted August 12, 2009 #10 Share Posted August 12, 2009 One of the Best is (was) the FSU ensemble....it was bought by a private vendor so we don't get that one anymore. I think NHC still gets to peek at it though. A few others are better on a given day or storm. I just watch the trends. Everyone seems to think that the GFS is the best. Sometimes that's true. I don't just jump on the lastest run of the GFS like a lot of forecasters do.

cruisincory Posted August 12, 2009 #12 Share Posted August 12, 2009 I hope it turns back out to sea. We are going on the Sensation out of Canaveral on the 23rd..hopefully everything will be quiet that week. We experienced Gustav chasing us home last year on the Inspiration..pretty rough ride
oceanseagle12 Posted August 12, 2009 #13 Share Posted August 12, 2009 It's a good idea to have insurance! Typically, they will cover tropical weather-related delays as long as the insurance is purchased before the storm is named...

I would take the ginger tablets, word is you need to start taken them before the cruise to have it in your system. I would also take some non-drowsy sea sick medicine in your bag. Then you have it if you need it. They do have sea sick medicine on board also. The big trick is to take it at the first sign of sea sickness, if you wait until you are really sick, it takes longer to work. But, mostly, relax and have a good time! bnr0914 Posted August 12, 2009 #15 Share Posted August 12, 2009 My family and I are traveling from NJ to Bermuda leaving this Saturday. We are supposed to be in Bermuda on Monday leaving Tuesday to sail home. Should I be worried about this weather?
Scott_F Posted August 12, 2009 #16 Share Posted August 12, 2009 If you see big Low Pressures in the Gulf or in Texas, then we start paying attention. Generally if there's a big High parked around Miami, that bad boy is going to turn north. So, there's a big H in the midwest pushing a line of storms towards FL. That is what is going to turn this TD to the north. There's a Low up around the mid-Atlantic and they could end up seeing some rain out of this IMHO. arpie05 Posted August 12, 2009 #18 Share Posted August 12, 2009 All I can say is thank goodness for Cruise Critic! I started my 550 mg (I think) ginger capsule last week for my Aug 16 cruise. When I saw this storm - or storms - yesterday - I started taking two capsules and now my son (13) is taking one. He gets sea sick and does not like ginger candy ( i just dug one out of my desk to pop into my mouth) or ginger tea - Walmart carries Tazo green ginger tea. I started drinking one cup every day yesterday. I also carry on a couple tea bags since at they are $3.25 a cup onboard at the specialty coffee shop. Also bought a new bottle of meclizine today - what is sold under the brand names of Bonnie and Non-drozy Dranimine. My 100 tablets cost $4. Traveler353 Posted August 12, 2009 #20 Share Posted August 12, 2009 Cruising during Hurrican season you put your money down and take your chances. I have had 2 out of 5 Carnival trips re-routed due to storms (plus 1 re-routed by the flu). . No problem, had great cruises every time. No matter what some jerks (usually on their first post or a clip on "youtube" say, Carnival and the ships Captain do what is best for the safety of all. OP you will have a great cruise wherever the ship takes you.
gtalum Posted August 12, 2009 #21 Share Posted August 12, 2009 TD2 is a couple of weeks out and will almost certainly curve out into the north Atlantic. I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's the bad boy behind TD2 that I would worry more about. The models are bullish on development and they take it right across the Atlantic into the Caribbean. It'll be a week or so behind TD2. jrmutley Posted August 12, 2009 #22 Share Posted August 12, 2009 Thanks for the input so far...except for that "clever" video. lol. :p This might be a dumb question. But, from what I hear, there is no such thing. Any concerns with giving ginger caps to children? Thanks again. Keep the comments coming...but hold the horrifying videos, please. Not so much for me. I might show my wife this stuff later!
sammee Posted August 12, 2009 #23 Share Posted August 12, 2009 I saw this this morning, something I'll be watching. We're set for the 22nd on the Fascination, driving in from NJ. We could have a rainy trip or maybe not. The cruise I'm not the least concerned about. We have insurance, and as long as we can board it, anywhere will be fine. I'll settle for Bermuda instead, lol. At least it'll be warm weather. I wouldn't want to have a cruise up here in the NE diverted, may end up in Canada without having the proper clothes. arpie05 Posted August 12, 2009 #24 Share Posted August 12, 2009 I can not do the travel patches - when they come off (even if I leave on for weeks) I end up with vertigo. My son is 13 so I think ginger capsules are okay. He won't eat ginger candy and I can't imagine why kids can't eat ginger? He just does not like the taste. I think one capsule is actually half a dose.
dkalnas Posted August 12, 2009 #25 Share Posted August 12, 2009 There is no better site on the net for watching storms. http://www.stormpulse.com/fullscreen/current Nice graphics but little in the way of information or forecasts. This is the best site to follow for tropical weather. http://www.easternuswx.com/bb/index.php?showtopic=202849 You will get graphics, forecasts, and analysis from a number of tropical weather experts in a non-formal format. The link attached is for the thread specifically discussing TD#2 which will likely be upgraded to Ana at 5pm.
