Gator83 Posted August 14, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 14, 2009 Hi, My friend had a co-worker tell her that he heard that when the new ships come out they have the best crews aboard (customer service, entertainment, servers, etc.). Do you any of you think that is true? I have never heard anything to thate effect. Thanks
-Lew- Posted August 14, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 14, 2009 My friend had a co-worker tell her that he heard that when the new ships come out they have the best crews aboard... You couldn't prove it by my experience. The crew on the Grand last winter wass the best overall I have experienced cruising on any ship. That includes the newer ships... Momma Mojito Posted August 14, 2009 #3 Share Posted August 14, 2009 Maybe they put the most experienced crew on the new ships because they may have more knowledge of resolving a situation should it happen.
NSWP Posted August 14, 2009 #4 Share Posted August 14, 2009 I was recently on Crown Princess for 27 days, the ship is 3 years old, in my opinion a lot better crew, service wise, food wise and tendering operation wise than my round Australia cruise last year on ye olde Sun Princess, banished to 'down under.' But then in the past 5 years I have had two trips on Pacific Princess, an older ship, but the crew was very good, so I am divided on the 'best crew for the new ships' issue. can786 Posted August 14, 2009 #5 Share Posted August 14, 2009 The way I understood it is that when a new ship debuts they will often take some of the best staff from the entire fleet and put them on the new ship, but that is mainly done to balance out the new hires that are also starting on the new ship. They could not have a totally inexperienced crew so they transfer some of the best staff at all levels to mentor those with less experience. I don't know how long this arrangement lasts after a new ship debuts though.
CL-JW Posted August 14, 2009 #6 Share Posted August 14, 2009 While they may take some of the more experienced crew from among the fleet, we really have had good service from the crew on all of our ships, regardless of how old the ship was. Putterdude Posted August 14, 2009 #8 Share Posted August 14, 2009 I don't think that all of the best crew go to the new ships but I am sure that some are drafted or incented to go to new ships. However I am equally certain a lot of very good crew try to return to certain ships because of working conditions, chefs, maître'ds, officers and even itineraries. As a for instance, I understand that a high percentage of crew on the Coral at any one time are repeats.
tinkerbell_2 Posted August 14, 2009 #9 Share Posted August 14, 2009 We went on the Ruby when it first set sail in FL and the head waiter in the dining room talked with us a lot. He gets moves every time to a new ship.. he was on the Crown, then Emerald and then Ruby. From what I understand you all are correct - they move some very experienced employees over to help launch the ship and get it managed, however - I think Princess tries and makes sure ALL ships have the same service. We just got off the Disney Wonder yesterday.. and it has only confirmed to us that Princess is our favorite cruise line!
kendon Posted August 14, 2009 #10 Share Posted August 14, 2009 It has been generally true in our experience.
Rare PescadoAmarillo Posted August 14, 2009 #11 Share Posted August 14, 2009 We were actually told by a member of the waitstaff on the Emerald last January that this is true...that they move some of the very best at what they do to the new ships. She also said that the stress level for the crew is much higher on the new ships (she mentioned the Emerald and the Ruby last January) as senior management sets much higher expectations for everything. Of course, I can't prove it, but do have to admit that the service and food quality on the Emerald was the best we've ever enjoyed on Princess. We liked the Cruise Director from the Carribean Princess better but the activity gang was the BEST on the Ruby. Very friendly group and they were EVERYWHERE! I don't know how long this arrangement lasts after a new ship debuts though.I don't think it's so much the "best" staff but rather they put experienced staff from a variety of ships on a new ship along with new staff. In other words, they don't denude a ship or ships to make a new one look good. They put a mix on the new ship and the same thing holds true for the other ships, i.e., the places are filled with new staff. It all has to do with whose contracts are ending and when. They don't just transfer staff but when someone experienced is starting a new contract, they might put them on the new ship. They stay for the length of their contract which could be 6 or 9 months. Rare Coral Posted August 16, 2009 #15 Share Posted August 16, 2009 Some of the best crew I have encountered (waiters, room stewards, purser's desk) say that they often put in for the older ships as they prefer the smaller ships. They don't always get their choice but that is their preference. On the other hand, positions like Head Waiters, Matrides, Hotel Manager - I have no doubt they put some of the best on the newer ships.
Colo Cruiser Posted August 16, 2009 #16 Share Posted August 16, 2009 They do gather up all the best/experienced crew from around the fleet to break in a new ship.
