CruisesOnMyMind Posted August 14, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 14, 2009 Everyone gets their hair colored before a cruise if needed right? Well I find the price of getting touchups is up near 100 bucks. I just can't afford it anymore and would like to ask my hair stylists, that I have been going to for over 10 years, for the formula. I would still get my cuts and highlights with her, but I know I can teach my DH to put on the touch ups. I have not had the nerve to ask. Has anyone else taken it upon their selves to do their own touchups now that we are in a economic crunch? Should I feel guilty asking her for the formula? Or is there another way of getting my color without asking her? How did you handle this,,,,if you did! This has really been bothering me for the last year, but I still go:eek:
Bowie MeMe Posted August 15, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 15, 2009 I had to do the same thing! Divorced my hair dresser (20 years or so) when retired and just could not put out $140 for cut/highlights/color and $60 every 2 weeks for nails and art on nails. Sometimes miss it but have found after 2 years that it really is just fine to do your own. I swim almost every day in chlorine pool and I wash hair after pool so my color job does not last long. Every 3 weeks I apply a box of Nice and Easy 103N. The boxes now have highlights in the formula and I get good results just dumping it on my short hair and waiting 25 minutes. NO DH needed. The conditioner in a tube is really easy to carry for trips and adds great shine. My hair is probably gray blonde (haven't seen it in 45 years without color:o) and I like my light blonde look. At $5.95 on sale (stock up) sure does not cause the cash crunch. Do get your hair cut professionally. Be aware that you might have to change hair dressers with going to your own color from a box. Beanie01 Posted August 15, 2009 #4 Share Posted August 15, 2009 I color my own at home, too. I used to stick with Feria, now I use whichever is on sale. I naturally have very dark brown hair. I like going a shade darker and using black. It very quickly starts to look like my natural dark brown. I used to use chocolate cherry, which was dark brown with red highlights, but it quickly faded to this horrible brassy red. Now, no one even notices I colored it. It always looks very dark brown. I do it about every 4 weeks. Just mix it up, put it in, and watch the news for 1/2 hour. For touch-ups, try the root touch up product. It's the same as regular coloring, but everything is mini! Just enough to comb through the roots.
KLLund Posted August 15, 2009 #5 Share Posted August 15, 2009 I would ask the hairdresser.. she knows that the economy is bad now and if you are still doing the cuts etc she will understand that at the moment you need to cut back somewhere. Just be candid .. I can't imagine her not helping out a loyal customer.
robthens Posted August 15, 2009 #6 Share Posted August 15, 2009 Count me in as one who started coloring my own hair this year. I was going every four weeks (actually needed to go every 3 weeks). It was really a hassel getting an appointment and timing the appointments so I could go right b4 the trip. My hair dresser only works on Thurs & Fri. Just took a chance and bought Clairol Nice'n Easy with the color blend technology. As mentioned in the previous post it comes with a tube of conditioner that is great. My hair has never been in better shape. DH helped me with the back a few times.....really easy to do on your own. Re: picking the right color. I got mine right the first try. I just picked from the color shown on the box. I told my hair dresser after the fact. Now I'm getting a cut about every 60 to 90 days. Doing my own hair has given me a lot of freedom and has certainly saved me a lot of money.
packedandready Posted August 15, 2009 #7 Share Posted August 15, 2009 I went school clothes shopping with my sister and her 2 kids today. I was squatting down helping my niece try on shoes and my 5 year old nephew came up to me and looked down on the top of my head (probably the first time he's seen me from that angle). He looked awhile and then asked his mother "does she paint her hair"? I guess that's what hi-lites look like to a little boy.

JanineM Posted August 15, 2009 #9 Share Posted August 15, 2009 I used to do my own colouring, but would rather go without dinners out for a month than take that on again! If you use a single process colour, you wind up with single colour hair that looks like a dye job. If you do your own highlights then they can look really funky because it's easy to get too much on one area and too little on another. I had a friend do my highlights with one of those at-home kits and I only realized she had mis-timed and used WAY too much stuff on my hair when my scalp started to burn. Chalk up $250 in professional fees to fix that one! You can use a cap for highlights, but I found that it doesn't get close enough to the roots to make it look like a pro job. Now I have tried those root touch up kits, but the colour just wasn't right. If you just need some in between colour then maybe try a colour glossing product. John Freida makes them in brown, blonde and red. They actually do add some colour to your hair and make it look really shiny. It's good for in-between colouring fixes. missygirl Posted August 15, 2009 #10 Share Posted August 15, 2009 Hello all...well let me say that I'm a stylist and several of my clients have had to start coloring their own hair...am I upset...no... I know what its like in our country right now and is hard for everyone. On thing that I agree with is be very careful and never, never pick a color that is too dark or it may go black. Also coloring over bleach is tricky due to it may go very ashy (green tint) or could even go a purple tint. As far as being a level "2" that is like a dark chocolate brown...dark...look at Beanie's post where she had problems with reds. I'm not sure that your stylist will agree to give out your formula to you...not something that we generally like to do...she might but don't count on it. Bowie MeMe Posted August 15, 2009 #11 Share Posted August 15, 2009 Guess I'm not too fussy and my hair has been a large variety of shades of blonde. The nice and easy with color technology puts some variation in the shade that I like. I always did blonde on blonde streaks so maybe not so much contrast as blonde on brown. Best thing is that in 3-4 weeks the permanent hair color is gone;) Course for $6.00 can try a different color in a few days.
Bowie MeMe Posted August 15, 2009 #12 Share Posted August 15, 2009 I would love to go silver/white like my dad but I'm afraid I got Mom's light mousey color instead. Anybody know how to match husband's silver (I have a young face (plump does not wrinkle much) so don't think it would make me look old)?
jnc411 Posted August 15, 2009 #13 Share Posted August 15, 2009 HI have been coloring my own hair for a long time now , I really do like the new Clairol nice and easy with the shades built in, I am quite gray I am sure but it has been a loooong time since I saw my own color now, but have decided to try to go natural gray in stages. There was a thread on this board about how people did it , I figure If I hate it I can always go back to color. Cori

Do you think that your color is hard to find? Last time that I looked, places like Target and Walmart don't put out fake pieces of hair that show the color, not that it would necessarily matter anyways since people start off w/dif shades, but places like Sally Beauty Supply do. I wouldn't feel guilty about asking for the formula, especially since you still use her services in other areas. You never know unless you ask, right?:o
Aelsantokie Posted August 15, 2009 #15 Share Posted August 15, 2009 I agree with Missygirl. I doubt your hairdresser would give you the formula. In my salon we will give the formula to another salon where you might have switched over or to another person with a cosmetology license. Unless you have very short hair you get trimmed often, I would not recommend coloring your own hair. I've seen hair with too many bands of color. If you must color at home, please use a sulfate free ph balanced shampoo.
Goldryder Posted August 15, 2009 #16 Share Posted August 15, 2009 I have been colouring my own hair for several years. I'm a natural blonde/mousey hair colour and absolutely hate that, so use Schwarzkopf Live XXL V46 Cyber Purple and R43 Red Passion, alternating the shade every 5-6 weeks. The colour is really good, in daylight it's mainly red and under lights it has a purple lowlight effect. When cruising last year one of the crew wanted to try and recreate the colour effect on her hair cos she liked it so much, but as she was already dark haired, the colour layering didn't work as well. The hairdresser on the ship tried it on her own hair, being a natural blonde, and she too had the same finish effect as I get. Looks really different to the normal one base colour or highlighted. Live XXL comes with the usual conditioners too and I have used it in combination of shades for around 4 years now and not had any ill effects on the scalp or hair :)
Lynnone Posted August 15, 2009 #17 Share Posted August 15, 2009 I have been putting my "base" color on for years, and my hairdresser adds highlights and cuts and styles my hair. She has no problem with this. If it is too long between appointments, and I need to touch up roots only, I do that also. I use L'Oreal Feria and have been happy with it. Just looked on the box for a color I liked. No need to get color on DH. :)
mafig Posted August 15, 2009 #18 Share Posted August 15, 2009 I've been coloring my own hair for years now also. Since I have some grey, the coloring comes out different on the grey than on my natural (light brown, I think) hair....so I get highlights without even trying. Nebr.cruiser Posted August 15, 2009 #19 Share Posted August 15, 2009 I started coloring my hair at home this winter--my DIL actually puts it on for me (and cuts it; she's not a hair stylist, but does a great job.) I actually like the color better than my salon color and it seems to fade less. I haven't seen my natural color for twenty years but it must be gray to white by now, going by how white my part gets when it's time for a touch-up. My natural color was brown with quite a lot of red highlights. I'm using a product called Color Brilliance, which I get at Sally Beauty Supply, in either medium or light copper brown. It costs around $6. I love the red highlights it gives me. I've used the root touchups with some success--not perfect, but better than that white streak in a pinch! Happy ks Posted August 15, 2009 #20 Share Posted August 15, 2009 I doubt a stylist will give out the formula unless you are moving to another city far away! They don't go into the back room and open a box, they mix a formula and it's not just an ounce of this, 2 ounces of that, it's also different levels of peroxide and other things. It's been so many years since I've worked in the business I'm sure there is so much more to know now. A good hairstylist will know how to advise you to buy a color that will work for you without looking too horrid. It's to their advantage to help you look your best to attract new clientele. Don't forget they have spent a lot of time and money learning about color and to ask them to just give away their knowlege is a bit unfair to them. I'll do a color gloss on my hair, but I'd never venture as far as coloring my own hair. When I used to cut hair I did have clients do their own color and I would advise them when they were making mistakes and how to correct it. The biggest mistake is coloring too dark, choosing the wrong base color and the worst, home highlights. Edit to add, there are a lot of hairstylists out there that don't keep up on education and probably should take a few classes. For a person to get better results than a professional, egads! Willie T Posted August 15, 2009 #21 Share Posted August 15, 2009 Ok, ok, I'am a hair stylist, and there have been times when someone just can not afford to keep their hair color up. I understand that, been there myself, but on the other hand.....our shop has gone from a nice steady little business, to sometimes nothing all day! The economy is killing us right now! And there is no way we would get away with charging $100 for a simple touch up. LOL I wish I had an answer for both sides. Be aware though, the girls who work at Sally's and similar places don't always know what they are talking about. They are very nice, and they try, but I sure have seen some messes from taking their advice. Hair color is not a black and white issue, there is a lot to consider. If someones wants a simple color where I work, it's approx. $45. If they come in for a color correction, that starts at $85. Sometimes it's cheaper in the long run to get it right the first time. If at all possiable, have a stylist do highlights! This is the hardest to do at home. Let's just all hope things get back to normal soon.:p

You are absolutely right on with the Clariol Root Touch Up (the cheapest I've found it is in Walmart - no surprises there:p) It is really easy to use I usually just use my finger as the little brush they supply it pretty useless. And picking a color is also a snap as just about any shade will blend. My hair grows really fast and I really should professional color every 3 weeks but honestly who can afford that and who has the time? The Clairol stuff works in about 10 mins just do the roots and work it through the rest of your hair. Its great stuff;)
CruisesOnMyMind Posted August 15, 2009 Author #23 Share Posted August 15, 2009 Thank you all for the suggestions. I am going to try the Nice and Easy with the two tones right in it. Sounds great as I do not like a solid look. My hair color now is a dark golden blonde/brownish base with highlights. My roots are dark and white grey  I know I have to get a product for all over and not just the roots as I don't think I could every match a professional color. I thought if I got the formula I would go to Sally's and buy it. I know she uses Schwarzkopf. I thought in this day and age there would not be the mixing of peroxide in color anymore, but was just a guess. If I screw up my hair,,,, well I will just have to go get ur fixed:( It will need to be done in a few weeks, just before my cruise! Okay I just scared myself with that!:D After hearing your suggestions, I might have her do it one more time before my cruise and tell her what I am going to do and apologize, but will see her for cuts. I won't know about the highlights until I see what this Nice and Easy does.
Bowie MeMe Posted August 15, 2009 #24 Share Posted August 15, 2009 Do it now and see how you like the nice and easy. If you don't like the look you can go to stylist and get it the way you like it. $6 isn't much for a try. Hair dresser just might comment on how bad hair feels and how bad color looks but judge for yourself. I can understand them not wishing to loose some of their income stream. Wish times would get good again but then cruises would cost more.:(
Liv4cruzin Posted August 15, 2009 #25 Share Posted August 15, 2009 When I swim, I rinse my hair in a freshwater shower before entering a chlorinated pool. My thinking is that my hair has already absorbed the fresh water; & that the chlorine will have little (if any) affect to my color job. I've not noticed any loss of color.
