DPurcell58 Posted August 17, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 17, 2009 I believe hurricane season lasts from June through November.
Whimsy Posted August 17, 2009 #3 Share Posted August 17, 2009 Just because a cruise is being diverted away today or tomorrow doesn't mean you won't be going there on your cruise. Unless there is serious damage the hurricane will go thru and ships will resume stopping there. When is your cruise? Yes, prices are cheaper in September due to kids back in school, less people traveling due to hurricane season, etc. We purposely choose to sail in September/October due to the low prices, kids back to school and warm water temps. LHP Posted August 17, 2009 #5 Share Posted August 17, 2009 just over at my wristwatch hobby forum and someone on a cruise is being diverted away from St thomas due to hurricanes we go soon and dont want to be diverted, that will really upset me i know, dont wanna die in a hurricane, we didnt think when we booked this that it was hurricane season... are the prices really cheaper in september due to this? i have looked and doesnt appear to be...that is what i heard anyway, wasnt the reason we booked, our son did and then asked us to go with him I always remind folks to never book at cruise based solely on the ports. Ports can be missed a lots of reasons other than weather. There can be a medical emergency on board that requires the ship to alter their course. If someone really wants to go to a particular area, they should fly there. A cruise ship is not a bus or an airplane......it is not simply a mode of transportation. Rates are cheaper in September (which can be the worst part of hurricane season) because school is back in session and anytime school is in session .. it is considered the off season for pricing. We were suppose to go out on Sept 1st last year ....5 days to Mexico...Gustav changed it! We did not leave until Wednesday and it became a 3 day cruise to nowhere. We had a blast! Life happens.... Scott_F Posted August 17, 2009 #6 Share Posted August 17, 2009 September is traditionally the worst month. August is normally when things get rolling. To me, it's always been a trade-off. If you want to avoid all the kids during the summer, you book late August and September. If you want to avoid storms, you book in June and July. I guess since I grew up on the Texas coast, I'm very "in-tune" with hurricanes and tropical storms. Rode out many of them. Just lost the downstairs on my beachhouse to Ike. Good news for you randy, is they'll send you somewhere else if they have to avoid the storm. What date is your cruise booked?
randys Posted August 17, 2009 Author #7 Share Posted August 17, 2009 at random i picked cruises in dec and feb and doesnt appear to be cheaper, if so by very little we leave 9-5 out of Miami...it is just i have done a ton of research for mainly St Thomas, have bought very expensive RX snorkeling goggles, etc i am the worrying type and need to just relax and accept what happens, had i been in charge of deciding when to go i wouldnt have gone during hurricane season...;)
mosel Posted August 17, 2009 #8 Share Posted August 17, 2009 Most of Feb and Dec are low season also. Except around Christmas and President's Day(again when kids are off). We cruise the first two weeks of dec often because the prices are low. Even so last year we had tropical storms and possible hurricanes forming for our Dec 13th cruise. When you cruise... It is a REQUIREMENT to be flexible. Last year we didn't get to Grand Turk because of winds and waves... we went to nassau instead. We had just been to Nassau two weeks earlier but we got of the ship walked a few minutes, got back on the ship and had a great day on the empty ship. It is a dissapointment to not get to do what you have been planning for so long. If you don't go to one port there will be another port to use those new goggles. Just go with the flow and have a great time. Cindy

We sail on 8/23 and she doesn't watch the news much. I've not told her about Ana or Bill. I figure by 8/23, we'll see what the waters look like. No use in having her worry excessively. BlueC5Kitten Posted August 17, 2009 #10 Share Posted August 17, 2009 Looks cheaper during Sept to me. I looked at an 8-day Eastern out of FLL in April and September and the cost difference was $600 total!
PA Dutchman Posted August 17, 2009 #11 Share Posted August 17, 2009 We found the best prices are in Jan into Feb. Here is Carnys update, don't know what ship you are on. TROPICAL UPDATE August 16, 2009 – 8:00 PM We are closely monitoring the progress of Tropical Storm Ana and Tropical Storm Bill. All of our ships are operating at a safe distance from these storms. Our number one priority is the safety and comfort of our guests and crew. Due to a favorable change in the forecast for these storms, we will now operate the scheduled itineraries for the Carnival Glory, Carnival Liberty and Carnival Victory. The Carnival Freedom will now visit Nassau (Sun.), San Juan (Tues.), St. Thomas (Wed.) and Tortola (Thur.). We are not anticipating any other itinerary changes at this time. We will update this information if any other changes become necessary.

Yes, hurricane season runs 5 months of the year....and, when you cruise during that time, there is always the possibility of changes in itinerary, diversions, etc. Being upset is understandable, for sure. But, cruise lines don't control the weather. Those of us who cruise during the Sept-Dec time period know what we are doing and accept that things may change. And, yes, it's usually cheaper during those months. You also might be interested to know that there is no "compensation" for missing a port, no discounts on future cruises, etc. If a port is missed, Carnival usually refunds about 20.00 to your onboard account, reflecting the port charges for the missed port. Like the airlines, cruise lines are at the mercy of the weather and changes are not considered compensable. You might want to read through the information on their website. Just open Carnival.com and scroll to the bottom. There are several important items there concerning your cruise; terms and conditions that everyone has agreed to when the cruise was booked. Knowing these things can lessen your stress, for sure.
