Iwannabeatraveler Posted August 19, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 19, 2009 Where are your "must eat" places on Oahu?? How about the north shore? Any great breakfast places? Looking for casual places with great food... Great price is a bonus! Hubby doesn't want to have to "dress up"...
kb996 Posted August 19, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 19, 2009 Can't tell you about specific restaurants but for food ... They serve fried rice with breakfast in Hawaii. It's SO good. Also you have to have Shave Ice.
cruiseman40 Posted August 19, 2009 #3 Share Posted August 19, 2009 Ted's Bakery in North Shore, Haleiwa. Awesome bakery and great local food!
jmrfamily Posted August 19, 2009 #4 Share Posted August 19, 2009 When your in the North Shore, you have to try a shrimp truck lunch. The place I have been to and suggested to others (they loved it also) was Fumi's Kahuku Shrimp - they have both a truck and a road-side stand. Before we went to Oahu the first time, people would tell me about the "cheap shrimp truck lunches" on the North Shore. But, they are not cheap - all that we saw run about $12 per plate. But the food is excellent! http://fumiskahukushrimp.com/
tg_lindo Posted August 19, 2009 #5 Share Posted August 19, 2009 1) Mango pickles. Preferably from a roadside stand or from someone's garage. 2) Poke, both ahi and octopus. Preferably from a busy clean food market. 3) Laulau. Preferably from a plate lunch counter.
Rare Lionesss Posted August 19, 2009 #6 Share Posted August 19, 2009 The buffet at the Pacific Beach hotel in Waikiki, enormous aquarium, and a lot of sea food to eat. If you got a LOT of money to spend Wolfgangs in Waikiki. Or for a nice relaxing dinner, Dukes in Waikiki. Safe travels.

I'm very casual and like basic simple food... ;) Big City Diner... http://bigcitydinerhawaii.com/ Auntie Pastos... http://www.auntiepastos.com/ Eggs 'n Things (great for breakfast)... http://www.eggsnthings.com/ The Shack (Waikiki & Hawaii Kai)... http://www.shackwaikiki.com/ http://www.shackhawaiikai.com/ Hank's Haute Dogs... http://www.hankshautedogs.com/ Kua 'Aina (IMO the best burgers & fries on the planet)... http://www.kua-aina.com/ The website is in Japanese for some reason, but they're in Ward Center... http://www.wardcenters.com/dining/Merchants/KuaAinaSandwich.html And the original is in Haleiwa on the North Shore. West Maui Posted August 21, 2009 #13 Share Posted August 21, 2009 Ahhhh...........FOOD! One of our favorite topics in Hawaii! Let's see, a few more recommendations in Oahu (downtown/Waikiki area): Chai's Island Bistro at Aloha Tower Marketplace; Orchid's (Chinatown); Prince Court Sunday Brunch (Prince Hotel); Wailana Coffee Shop (Next to Aqua Palms, across the street from HHV, very old and good!); Leonard's Malasadas (Leonard's Bakery); House without a Key (Halekulani); Sansei and/or dk's Steaks.........that's all I can think of right now. Happy Opu (stomach) ahead!

CaribbeanBound Posted August 22, 2009 #17 Share Posted August 22, 2009 TrentS gave you a really good list. Would also add "Jack's" which is located in a hole in the wall at the Aina Hina Shopping Center (between Waikiki and Hawaii Kai). If nothing else, don't miss the incredibly great pancakes. We ate breakfast there 3 times! What else to eat (not to miss)? - Char Sui Manapua from Char Hung Sut Restaurant in Downtown Honolulu - Papaya - Mangos (if you have a blender, slush one up and add vanilla ice cream. Oh man is that an awesome milkshake!) - Chicken Katsu with Plum Sauce (from L & L Drive in) - Shave Ice (be sure to ask for a scoop of ice cream in the bottom) - Bring home lots of Kona Coffee. The most popular flavor is Vanilla Macadamia Nut. Most flavored Kona Coffee is 10% Kona. - Boston Pizza. The pizzas are so huge, they hang out of the big pizza boxes. I'm not a big poi fan, but anything made with taro is really good, like fresh taro bread, rolls, and english muffins. It's purple-colored from the taro. Some friends really like the fish tacos at Wahoos. A fun family place for Sushi is Genki Sushi. It's my daughter's favorite place to eat. We like the one on Kapahulu near Waikiki. All different kids of sushi float by on a conveyor belt that's right next to your table. Take what you want, and pay by the plate. You can also buy sushi and lots of island fruits at Costco. After breakfast at Jacks, hike Diamond Head: http://www.lavasurfer.com/info/hikediamondhead.html

West Maui Posted August 22, 2009 #20 Share Posted August 22, 2009 Another great place I forgot... Indigo in downtown Honolulu... http://indigo-hawaii.com/ And Buzz's in Kailua (Lanikai)... http://buzzssteakhouse.com/lanikai.htm TrentS' post reminded me why I should type slooowly....gosh, talking about food had me too excited! I wrote Orchids--which is at the Halekulani, not Chinatown.........and then skipped typing Indigo.....which IS in Chinatown, right by the restored Hawaii Theatre. Sorry, but both are great (especially martini madness at Indigo;))
deckgirl Posted August 26, 2009 #21 Share Posted August 26, 2009 :Dif you have time on your way to/from north shore, stop at dole pineapple planation for the most out-of-this-world pineapple ice cream. it's not sherbert or sorbet, but the creamiest, freshest taste you won't even believe. also, if you want to eat where locals eat, try puka dog or ono hawaiian foods in downtown honolulu. and don't forget the spam! ha, ha. actually, we love spam and ono hawaiian has it served many different ways, all of them great. happy sailing! Jenbo57 Posted August 28, 2009 #22 Share Posted August 28, 2009 Banana pancakes with macadamia nut sauce at Boots & Kimo's in Kailua (windward coast of Oahu). Heaven on earth! Oh, to be able to have some right now... Also, haupia, which a lot of people find nasty, but I love!!! (And the McDonald's on the islands have haupia pies!) :D
jrobinso Posted September 1, 2009 #23 Share Posted September 1, 2009 We never miss a Sunday Brunch at Orchids (Halekulani) when in Waikiki. Also a new favorite of ours is Roy's on Lewers St accross from the Halekulani. The Wailana coffee shop accross from Hilton Hawaiian village is a great place for a fast inexpensive breakfast.
