prettyblue_eyes Posted August 22, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 22, 2009 I just got back from a 14 day Ryndam adventure from Vancouver to Alaska and back to Vancouver. We had these wonderful workshops for fixing our Digital Photos on the ships laptop. They used a pre-loaded software convceivably billed in their online promos as Windows Live Photo Gallery.. In the class the extremely talented knowledgeable instructor gave a handout with a web link so we could download this program at home. I've downloaded the windows live photo gallery, and this although maybe a version isn't what we used. Unfortunately with 14 days onboard but only 2 sea days I was unable to attend multiple classes. DOES ANYONE HAVE THAT WEB ADDRESS FOR THE DOWNLOAD?? OR KNOW WHAT THE PROGRAM WAS TO PURCHASE?? In the scurry of packing my handout was thrown out. Thanks Sharon
jtl513 Posted August 22, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 22, 2009 I've never taken one of the classes, but check to see if you recognize any of the downloadables on this site: http://download.live.com/
Retired and Rewired Posted August 22, 2009 #3 Share Posted August 22, 2009 I think the website you want is www.download.live.com.
Lizzie1 Posted August 23, 2009 #4 Share Posted August 23, 2009 If you go to the HAL website and click on the "On-line Community," you can see links for each of the ships. The people running the workshops have blogs, and they have links to hand-outs and things. There are also new tips. I think all the programs are by Microsoft. (I haven't taken a cruise yet, but am looking forward to the workshops in a couple of weeks.)
fann1sh Posted August 23, 2009 #5 Share Posted August 23, 2009 While the sample pictures are different from what we used on Ryndam, I think you'll find the Windows Live photo gallery works the same. I got the download this week (as mentioned above) and have just copied my Alaska pictures to the new program. Did one red eye edit, but haven't had time to play with anything more. Did you perhaps download other Windows Live functions, and not just the photo gallery? That could be responsible for your confusion. I have the handouts, and would be happy to scan and email them, if you are willing to post an email address - obviously, not your main one, but perhaps a hotmail or gmail account? Perhaps Lizzie1's suggestion is a better way of getting them, tho. ---Patricia
fann1sh Posted August 24, 2009 #6 Share Posted August 24, 2009 My face is red :o ! Like prettyblue_eyes, the version of Windows Live Photo Gallery I downloaded (to a computer that runs XP, browser Mozilla Firefox) doesn't have all the functions of the version we used on board ship. Missing are the ability to use the "Make" button to construct panoramic photos; plus the "Extras" button is missing, so you can "paint" out imperfections. Anyone have a clue why? Right now I'm running an "update" to see if that changes anything. (and it didn't!) ---Patricia

(and it didn't!) ---Patricia I just installed Live Photo Gallery out of curiosity, and I have a Make pull-down menu but the Create Panoramic Photo is grayed-out (unavailable). So nope, I don't have any clue. Is there a version that you have to pay something for?
Rare Essiesmom Posted August 24, 2009 #8 Share Posted August 24, 2009 Could it be Firefox that is the problem? Maybe trying it with IE would give you the other functions. EM

fann1sh Posted August 24, 2009 #10 Share Posted August 24, 2009 Found the problem. I have to select the photos I want to stitch together, before I can "make". DOH! Here's a Ketchikan panorama made (and cropped) with Windows Live photo gallery:
fann1sh Posted August 24, 2009 #11 Share Posted August 24, 2009 File was way too big, and has been deleted. Apologies to the Mods for a newbie mistake.

jtl513 Posted August 24, 2009 #13 Share Posted August 24, 2009 Looks like it does a good stitching job. About how much overlap did you use? (%). Did you do it just "freehand" or use a tripod or support of some kind? I've been using Panorama Maker 4 by ArcSoft for a couple of years, but I think I'll experiment, and compare the results with Live Photo Gallery. fann1sh Posted August 24, 2009 #14 Share Posted August 24, 2009 Sorry, it seems my revised picture is unacceptable, too. John, I did it freehand, but I'm pretty experienced in that. The recommended overlap is 30%; I think mine was more like 20 - 25 on this photo. I cropped the jagged edges the overlap produced. This is a HAL board, not a photo board - so, my point is the free HAL classes are well worth the time, since they teach you to use free software, which is also useful software. However, I still can't find the "paint" function. In class, we were taught to edit out intrusions - like a stranger in your water shot of family. jtl513 Posted August 24, 2009 #15 Share Posted August 24, 2009 Sorry, it seems my revised picture is unacceptable, too. I was able to see it briefly (prompting my questions) but now it's gone for me too. Very strange. :confused:However, I still can't find the "paint" function.
