Now that Poss has your attention...

And now that she and Mr. Poss have confirmed that they find the Mariner every bit as delightful as the Voyager, she is looking forward with happy anticipation to their Mariner Med cruise (June 28, 2010)—and would love your help.

The cruise ends in Civitavecchia. While we know Italy fairly well (and love it), we haven’t been to Rome in decades. (We’re more country mouse types than city mouse.) I’m hoping that some of you who know Rome well might be able to recommend some hotels that we might find compatible. It will be no surprise to anyone reading my other post that a high priority for us is quiet. We’d love to be well located for easy walking to sites, but peace and quiet is an even higher priority. We need a king bed (European king, of course, is fine, but can’t do with queen). We like good bathrooms. Don’t need luxury and don’t need lots of space, but like to be comfortable, not cramped. Want good quiet A/C.

Hoping to spend not more than about $300 per night (will probably spend 3 nights), but would go a bit higher if necessary.

Aventine Hill has been recommended on another site, and several hotels there sound pleasant. Not sure whether the hill aspect is a good idea for us oldsters.

I know that people usually post hotel queries on the “Ports of Call” section, and I’ve done that. But as has been mentioned by others, I feel a kind of kinship with Regent folks and tend to trust them.

In short (in my next life I’m going to be less long-winded) (and use fewer parentheses), I’d be most appreciative if anyone happens to be able to help with the Rome hotel quest.

Molte grazie!

but I love noise. However, the Hassler has rooms at the "back" that overlook a convent that are very quiet. For me, nothing is better located than the Hassler. If you get those "quiet" rooms that are less, that is a good thing. Call them direct or if you have a good TA, they will tell you. The Hassler is sooooo charming.

The Hassler is a wonderful hotel. For my money, it's the De Russie, just down the steps and up a few blocks at Piazza Popolo. It's beyond charming and relatively quiet. But you're not getting anywhere near the Hassler or the De Russie for $300 a night in the summer.

In our opinion, for peace and quiet, there is no better hotel in Rome than The Lord Byron. It is either a short taxi ride (or a nice walk through the park) to the Spanish Steps and is in a lovely residential area. The rooms can be made dark and the A/C is quiet. An excellent breakfast is included and the staff could not be nicer or more accomodating.

Thanks for quick replies. Will follow-up next week (we're off visiting relatives for the day).

Hassler and De Russie are double (maybe triple) what we can pay. I'll definitely look at the two others. I like the idea of a residential area. (Don't enjoy hustle and bustle.)

Which is why I'm half-thinking of Aventine Hill. Anyone stay there?

Again, thanks.

We stayed at Hotel Eden for 3 nights a few weeks ago and highly recommend it. The rack rate is much higher than your goal but we were able, just a few weeks before arrival (August 6) to book a room on their website for under US$300/night (it was a special and allowed no cancellations.) Gorgeous hotel, excellent service, breathtaking views from the roof-top bar and restaurant (although eating there will cost more than the room =) and for us the location was perfect: very quiet yet easy walking access the Spanish Steps, Via Veneto, etc.

This hotel is associated with several groups (Starwood, etc.) and we found the best rate through Leading Hotels of the World (http://www.lhw.com/property.aspx?version=4&ext2=dtpp01&id=95&ext=Italy_Hotels&ext3=search&ext4=Google)

Rally, that was quite a deal you got on the Eden! My husband used to travel to Rome for business and the Eden was his favorite hotel. I will check their rates next year if we decide to stay in Rome after the cruise, thanks for the tip!

Poss, several years ago we did a land trip through Italy and found Best Western to be a great deal. Convenient locations, interesting buildings and neighborhoods, clean and quiet and well-priced. If you Google Best Western Rome, you will get a nice list to check out. We stayed in the Best Western Canada in Rome. It was only a couple of blocks walk to a subway station or the buses of Termini. So, not in close walking distance of any tourist attractions, but a safe neighborhood with good public transit connections. We found our favorite little restaurant nearby too, cannot remember the name but it was near Termini and had pink tablecloths. Debbie

The Hassler is indeed a fabulous hotel but we stayed at the St. Regis and I must say, it was such a beautiful place and we enjoyed the location. Prices are north of the $300 mentioned in your original posting but definitely worth it for the grand rooms and bathrooms. We discovered a wonderful restaurant called PierLuigi at 144 Piazza de Ricci that I would highly recommend during your stay. It is closed on Mondays if I recall correctly but you can make reservations ahead of time http://www.pierluigi.it

We always stay at the Hotel delle ****oni-Roma when we are in Rome. It is right behind the Trevi Fountain (at Via Poli,7) and you are able to walk everywhere. We totally loved having dinner in front of the Parthenon and in the Plazza Navona. It is a 4 star small hotel and goes for about $333.00 US per night (breakfast included). It was renovated 2 years ago when they installed AC and sound proof windows, but since it was on a quiet street it never bothered us. Front desk was very accomadating. I usually book through : Venere.com on line.

Good luck,Pat

Many thanks for the suggestions. I'll be checking and cross-checking each one (especially for details about the quiet factor). Will be able to start focusing more on next year's Med cruise once I finish Alaska report and such.

Would love to hear about Aventine Hill if anyone's stayed there. Seems our best bet for quiet, but not so sure about ease of getting places.

Thanks again. And I'll welcome more input.
