Things to do near Cape Liberty

What time do you get into Cape Liberty and expect to disembark? The Liberty Science Center is adjacent to the Port, just north, as are Jersey City and Hoboken - lots of cafes, bars, plenty happening on the weekends (well, everyday) and Liberty State Park too - great views of the city.

If you want to go into the city - probably not easy with luggage - there is the Path Train which is quickest into Manhattan. It stops downtown/WTC and midtown/Penn Station. The trains run frequently, are safe and easy. Probably it would be easiest to get a taxi from the Port to Journal Square for the Path...

Getting to Newark from Manhattan is then quite easy via NJ Transit from Penn Station or the Port Authority...or other shuttles. Train is probably most reliable/quickest. Always better to allow extra time for Newark though for sure it is WAY better than La Guardia.

With more specifics on available time/interests I can offer better suggestions...there's a lot going on here :)

I'm returning from my cruise to Cape Liberty and don't fly out of Newark until 5:30. Any ideas what to do before we head to the airport? There are 4 of us and I'm in a wheelchair. I can transfer to a vehicle (no steps). Thanks for any help.

Anywhere you go you would have to take a cab, but four people and luggage and a wheelchair could be a challenge (assume you would need a van, but that could mean steps. Does your cruise line offer any kind of post-cruise tours that would be accessible? I know some of them offer something for people in your situation (flying out later in the day) and then a transfer to the airport. I believe they also will take care of your luggage. Just a thought.

Thanks for the suggestions. We'll be off the ship by 10, and want to be at the airport by 3. I don't think we'll try to go into NYC. The trickiest part is going anywhere with all our luggage and me in a wheelchair. Maybe we'll just hang out around the cafes and shops. I have MS and don't want to wear myself out before our 5 hour flight home. Maybe I'll look for accessible transportation and have someone drive us around to see sights for a few hours.

I don't think there are shops at Cape Liberty. I've only cruised out of there once and because we're local, there was no hanging around. Either check to see if the cruise line has something or go to the airport. Maybe get access to a lounge. You might want to post on the East Coast Departures discussions.

I don't think we'll try to go into NYC. We have a few hours to kill between 10 AM and 3.Should I set up accessible transportation ahead of time, or will there be taxis/shuttles there when we disembark? I like the idea of just hanging out around cafes and shops. Are those in Jersey City or Hoboken? The tricky part is having all our luggage and me in a wheelchair. It'd be fun to see a few sights around there before flying out. Thanks for any suggestions.

Did a bit of searching online to collect some references as everyone has different interests and ideas, and so wanted to offer many options and possibilities. I hope this helps a bit more!

Ideas of things to do/see in Hoboken (among other things, where Frank Sinatra came from, now known as home to TLC's Cake Boss and Bakery of same name)

Yes, I am certain you can reserve a mini van to take you to either/and/or Jersey City or Hoboken via Uber, Lyft or whichever reliable taxi service you contact that sounds good and works well with cruises etc, meets your needs. As mentioned in my post, both Jersey City and Hoboken are immediately adjacent to the Port in Bayonne and it will be a quick ride...Jersey City comes first, then Hoboken but again, it's fast.

Side note: most people have probably seen on the news that there has been a major train crash at the main Hoboken train station yesterday. The effect will be mostly on local commuters as they find new ways to get to work in Manhattan or home in the evening - effects locally will be felt only briefly as buses and alternative transport methods move into place to take up the effects of the disruption of train service. It won't be *normal* for them but it will be OK for everyone else.

See what's going on the date you'll be arriving in Port and plan accordingly. Don't try to overdue it, just enjoy the atmosphere, the view of Manhattan and even the history of these towns which do have some of the American immigrant stories we are known for in the metropolitan area (and still do!) plus a lot of vibrancy and great culture, innovation. It ought to be a great way to wind down your time before heading to Newark to fly home after what I hope will have been a wonderful cruise.

I hope this helps a bit more! Cheers, bon voyage and enjoy New Jersey!

Wow! You did a lot of research for me. Thanks so much. It'll be fun to see the area on our last day. I'll let you know what we end up seeing. Thanks again.

You're very welcome, happy to help. Hopefully you can enjoy either Jersey City or Hoboken for part of the day after you arrive in Port - I doubt arranging transport should be quite easy or I'd have added in those links as well.

These areas have developed so much over the years - they were always neighborhoods but the investment in the areas has been steadily growing so that there's much more to see/do/enjoy which is nice for locals and visitors alike - everyone wins!

One of these days I've got to pop into the area myself - I'm fortunate to be in the NYC/Metro area - just love it.

Do let us know how your port day and cruise went - we always enjoy hearing back from our members, and it helps other members planning their journeys!

Cheers :)
