walking into town

Hi,

I can't find CURRENT information about this - aside from the market that's at the dock in Puerto Limon, is there much to see if we walk a few blocks into the town? Anything of historical import, markets, etc?

What about the safety issue?

Thanks!

The last time we were in Limon I had to find a store to purchase some rechargeable batteries. I walked to a store in the business district, and although the lights were on and people inside, the door was closed and locked. I knocked and they first opened the inner door, then after looking me over, opened the outer gate which was made of metal bars, and I was allowed inside. Please draw your own conclusions about safety in this city.

We were in Puero Limon a couple of weeks ago. We took a tour that went to the Tortuguero canals, and included a tour of the area. When we got back we had some time so we walked around a bit in the town. There really isn't much there, we only walked a couple blocks or so. There are a couple souvenir type shops and some places that have cold drinks and wifi. We stopped in a bar and had a beer, it was a bit rundown but fine. We saw someone there we'd met on the ship who had brought his laptop and was sitting at the bar using the wifi. We saw many others who were from the ship walking around.

At no time did we feel unsafe.

There is a little park right at the edge of town that's worth visiting, sloths live in the trees there and you'll be able to get a good view of one.

It has been a couple years since we were there, but...

When we went into town, my wife was looking touristy as she tried to figure out directions to a cathedral in town on a map. I observed a guy suddenly change direction and head right toward her. I put my hand up,said "No", and gave him a stern stare. He headed away from us at that point.

You have to be careful anywhere you go, but I would not feel comfortable wandering around there if we were to return. But then again our excursion in Guatemala had an armed escort the first time we were there.

We are on a Panama Canal cruise currently, and currently in Puntarenas, Costa Rica. Just not the police presence here that we have seen at our other Mexico and Central America ports.
