Viking Ocean Cruise from Venice to Athens

Can anyone tell me how far it is from where the ship is docked in Venice to the canal area where we could take a gondola ride? Can we walk or need to take a taxi? Has anyone taken one by private vendor? Where would be the best place to find one. From reading reviews, it appears that the ones offered by the cruise line are group gondola rides and seating is not very comfortable nor are you able to seat next to your companion. Not very romantic, 'eh.
