Rose Hall Mansion and Dr. Caves

We are trying to please everyone in our group and want to do both the mansion and the beach on our Montego Bay stop on Carnival. I'm worried that the excursion might take all our time for "shopping" after the tour, so what would it be like if we did it on our own? Would it be better to take a taxi or is there a tour anyone knows of that does the mansion and the beach?
