Belfast -- shuttle/taxi?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

My hubby and I are Titanic-a-holics and will be taking the Titanic Walking Tour on Queen's Island in Belfast. It "looks" like it's near where the cruise ships dock according to Google Maps.

Now, I've heard that there's apparently a free shuttle bus that takes cruise passengers from the dock into the main city shopping area. Would our best bet be to take the shuttle to downtown, then catch a taxi over to the Titanic area? Or are there taxis somewhere at the port to drive straight there?

Thanks in advance! :)

When you dock, you can look out and see the old Titanic dock and Pump house. It looks close, but it's out and around the pier. The shuttle to downtown stops about 200 yards from the Belfast City Hall right in front of a tourist center. The big Ferris Wheel is right there as well. I believe it's farther to take a taxi from downtown than from the pier. As for downtown Belfast, to us, it was a bit disappointing. Other than the City Hall, the architecture is unremarkable. Nothing but regular stores, banks, department stores, and lots of empty shops. We would have been better off going to the Giant's Causeway or something other than downtown.

Thanks for your replies. :) I guess since we are going straight to Queen's Island to do the walking tour & big Titanic memorial/museum at 11am, I was trying to see if there were taxi's near the ship that would take us straight there since it is seemingly close.

Could you walk to the island from the ship? Or could you walk to it from the shuttle drop-off in town? I'll do a bit more Google research on my end as well. Thanks!

No, you couldn't walk from where the cruise ship docks to Queen's Island. It is within the industrial port/harbour area and in places there are no foothpaths/sidewalks.

Also, re the earlier post, the ferris wheel 'Big Wheel' is no longer in Belfast. :(

I think you should incorporate some of the city centre in your visit to Belfast as there isn't all that much to see in the Titanic Quarter once you do your tour there. There are also walking tours from the City Hall and information here - if you haven't already looked at this site -

Are you aware of a Titanic Memorial in the grounds of the Belfast City Hall?

There are walking tours (of approx. 1 hr duration) from this memorial usually on the days when cruise ships are docked in Belfast. Free tickets can be obtained from the Belfast Welcome Centre in Donegall Place (just opposite the City Hall). Perhaps you will be able to do one of these tours as well as the one you are taking in the Titanic Quarter! :)

Thanks LaBelle!

We'll have to look into taking a shuttle from the port to the city and then a taxi from the city ot Queen's Island. :)

The tour that we're really interested in is the Titanic Walking Tour. It seems incredibly cool. www.titanicwalk.com And the giant modern Titanic museum should be finished by the end of may when we're there. We also hope to do a HoHo bus after the tour is finished. Thank you for the bonus info as well!
