  1. vegs1, you are more ambitious than us. We also arrive on the 5th and taking the Magic on the 6th. I am worried about doing the few things we want to do in Copenhagen on Friday, let alone going out to Kronborg. Fortunately, we have a few days after the cruise to do that.

I would recommend doing Kronborg on Friday afternoon after your arrival and then stay close to Copenhagen if you want to do anything in the morning before you get on the ship on Saturday. The hotel should hold your luggage. The bad thing is that most things don't open until 10:00. The first canal cruise is 9:30 AM.

  2. What types of businesses will be closed on June 5th ?( Constitution Day) & Father's day. :-)

All shops will be closed but tourist sites and restaurants should be open.

We arrive in Copenhagen on June 5th. Glad to see the tourist sites and tours will be open. Will there be any special parades or activities to celebrate Constitution Day?

  3. Yes, it's thru Disney. It sounds like a great day, but so long.

That's what my DH said. My mom and dad did the Nutshell thing 20 some odd years ago from Bergen and thought it was the most beautiful scenery in Norway. I guess we'll have to go back some other time to take advantage of it. ;)

9 hours is a long day for just one excursion when your just in port for one day.

  4. UKcruise88: What do you think of this tour? It's 9 to 9 1/2 hours, so really didn't want to do it unless you think it would be really great.

    On this tour you will:

    • Board a motorcoach for an approximately 90-minute scenic journey past the Bryggen and Hanseatic quarters, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, driving out of the city towards the village of Voss. Voss is beautifully situated by a peaceful lake and is well known as a winter resort.
    • Arrive at the Voss train station and board a train for an approximately 50-minute journey through beautiful green agricultural areas and through a spectacular narrow valley up to the mountain town of Myrdal.
    • At Myrdal station, 2844 feet (867 meters) above sea level, you’ll change trains and depart to the village of Flåm.
    • Travel approximately 50 minutes descending the valley to the village of Flåm in one of the most spectacular scenic railroads in Europe. Flåm is situated on the Sognefjord – it is the longest and deepest fjord in Norway – 126 miles (204 km) long.
    • Arrive at the station in Flåm and after a short break, board the motorcoaches for an approximately 20-minute journey through the road tunnels to Gudvangen for a short photo stop.
    • Continue approximately 90 minutes as the road leads you into the narrow Nærøydalen with its many waterfalls. Next, start to ascend up the steep old road of Stalheimskleiva. After having maneuvered the 13 breathtaking hairpin bends of the Stalheim Canyon, you’ll reach the Stalheim Hotel, where a delicious lunch buffet will be served. The Stalheim Hotel is furnished with many precious antiques, beautiful old furniture and paintings. From the veranda, there is a fabulous view of the Nærøy Valley far below.
    • Conclude your approximately 90-minute break for lunch and continue your full day adventure passing the Oppheim Lake and villages of Oppheim and Vinje. After approximately 30 minutes traveling, arrive at the Tvinde Waterfall where you’ll have the chance to step off the motorcoach for pictures and a walk up to the waterfall.
    • Reboard your motorcoach for a short trip back to Voss, where you’ll have a chance to walk by the lake and church, during a short break.
    • Finally, travel approximately 80 minutes via the town of Dale back to Bergen where amazing day full of iconic views of Norway will end at the pier.

Are you going on a Disney cruise this summer? I looked at this excursion too and I thought it was great and reasonably priced. I'm not sure kids would enjoy it as it is very long day of regimented travel having to meet train schedules.

  5. We just got back from our amazing Alaskan cruise. We booked the 7.5 hour White Pass RR and Klondike Highway tour with Frontier Excursions. They were wonderful! We had need of the wheelchair rail car and had a tour van all to ourselves. It was an amazing trip. We went all the way up to Emerald Lake. While it was cool and cloudy in Skagway in the morning, it was warm and sunny in the Yukon.

We went to Caribou Crossing. The lunch was very good BBQ chicken quarters with half a seasoned baked potato, cole slaw and home made donuts. Water was provided at the table or you could purchase soda.

The dog camp and petting zoo are open to everybody. You have to pay extra to take a dog cart ride. There is also a taxidermy museum and gift shop there.

Bring mosquito repellant, they are thick up there.

  6. We just came back from our amazing Alaskan cruise. We booked Weather Permitting in Juneau. Capts. John and Harry were amazing. We spent an hour watching orcas! I highly recommend them. It was fun and educational.

  7. disneyfaninaz,

Thanks for the well wishes and the nice comments on the photos. YOu all see the best of the best - you don't see the couple thousand not so good shots! :D

Believe it or not, I often shoot in Program mode and find it to work great much of the time, and just tweek the shutter or aperture settings as I need to. With the whales, however, it was a different story. I shot with shutter priority when the light was softer, and then moved more to aperture priority in the f/9-f/11 range when the sun came out to control depth of field better. Even then, my shutter speeds all fell into the range of 1/500th to 1/1000th, with the whale tail and eagle shots running 1/640th. I hope that helps, and sorry for the delay responding. Have a fantastic time on your trip!

    L.J.

Welcome back! Thanks for the info, every little bit is appreciated to get those great shots! I will try to share them when I get back. :)

  8. A peek at the web site for NPS doesn't show one for Ketchikan (unless I missed it) but lists one ofr Hubbard Glacier, not Mendenhall. Interesting.

Mendenhall is part of the National Forest Service, not actually a park or monument, but they should have stamps.

The SE Alaska Discovery Center is not part of the National park system. I believe it is a state park.

  9. L.J. I hope your surgery was successful and you are recuperating nicely.

I've been following along with your trip report as we will be in Alaska this May. I am loving the details and the photos.

I'm wondering if you could tell me what settings you used on your camera for the whale photos. They are stunning. I will be using a 300 zoom lens. I was just wondering if you shoot manual, shutter speed or aperture priority.

    Thanks!

  10. We did a lot of Seattle by walking. We visited the harbor, the aquarium, the EMP museum, the science center, the Space Needle, and the Chihuly Gardens & Glass exhibit. We also enjoyed the Underground Tour.

  11. Our cruise will be visiting Sitka. We will be taking a Sea Otter and Wildlife Encounter Excursion through the ship. Afterward we would like to visit the Raptor Center. Is there transportation from downtown to the center? Do you know if it is wheelchair accessible? Would it be easier to walk?

    Thanks! :)

  12. Why would you never wear it again? A good rain jacket is worthwhile anywhere, unless you live in the desert, but your profile says you are in Michigan, so surely it rains there too. You may find that you get more use out of it than you think! :)

Well, I live in the desert, and I can attest that we do indeed need the occasional rain jacket. ;)

  13. We are on the same route in May. We leave from Vancouver, but we are also heading to Sitka. From what I understand you will experience open water the first sea day on the cruise and then once inside the passage the water is very smooth. if you have rough weather, you may have more motion.
