So, higher categories were able to book excursions via paper forms ahead of everyone else who will do so on the app in 15 min. The excursions appeared on the app this morning and all the overland are sold out.  It appears that one group (PVs?) was able to book via paper this morning as at 8 am there were 8 slots on the two less expensive overland trips but by 10:30 they joined the 5 day one as “Sold Out”. Some folks complaining about lack of transparency, but given the Karens and Kens lined up at Guest Services, I suspect Viking decided better to handle the higher categories more discreetly.  Hate it for us that we are all in a scrum but I would be really perturbed if I had paid for an ES and not gotten priority. Thankfully we had already decided to not spend all our credits as well as new money on any of the overlands so seeing them sold out didn’t ruin our day.

Viking delivered to everyone’s room at 11:30 paper forms for those that don’t want or can’t use the app and I think as their Plan B if the app crashes.  Hopefully it  won’t and all this angst and drama will be over by 12:15🤞

We're in a PV and got forms last night as backup for the app. No mention of early turn-in.

With low or high water the other boats can "choke a stomp" - tie up to a tree instead of a regular landing area. They use the stage to get the people off the boat. Viking needs a concrete dock where they can go alongside. Most landings are sloping down into the river. Therefore the boats have a flat bottom hull so they can literally ran aground with the bow and then use the stage to get the people off.

It's totally different from European rivers where you either have a floating docking area or a concrete dock where all boats can go alongside.

A couple of river towns did built a new docking area for the Viking Mississippi.

On our 12/31/22 Memphis to NOLA cruise we tied up to trees and as I recall rarely used a concrete dock except in Nola.

Cruise ship disruption ends as striking marine pilots reach resolution with TasPorts

Strike action that disrupted the holidays of thousands of cruise passengers and affected dozens of other vessels visiting Tasmanian shores appears to have been resolved.

TasPorts and the union representing their marine pilots reached an in-principal agreement on Wednesday afternoon, settling for a 12% pay increase spread over three years.

The state-owned company were forced back to the negotiation table after members of the Australian Maritime Officers Union announced further industrial action due to a pay dispute would begin from 12pm on Wednesday.

The proposed action would have included more work stoppages on weekends and public holidays, bans on work outside rostered hours and no communication with agents.

This latest disruption also impacted multiple cruise ships, with both the Viking Sky and Norwegian Spirit cancelling their planned visits to the state this weekend.

Normal port operations are expected to resume as soon as possible
