Hi, We are a family of 5 (youngest 19) who are booked for two nights at the Essex House Hotel pre our cruise on Getaway on August 2, 2014. Has anyone stayed here and have any reviews, do's and don'ts in area?

THANK YOU so much for posting these - so helpful! Everyone on this board sailing Getaway should be thanking you!
Yes it indeed was a fabulous post. Thank you. Also thank you for your post of the inaugural cruise and your wonderful pictures

I'm on the same cruise - thought I had to wait until I boarded! Did you get charged tax as well? I read somewhere that if you buy onboard there is no tax....
Might need to give them a call tonight!

Hi, Hope you all had a great cruise!!! Just wondering how you found the UBP an d if you would get it again. Not cruising until August on Getaway and still debating. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I bought a DVD a few years ago on the Epic for $200 or $250, that contained all of our pictures, along with a release so we could print any that we wanted. Perhaps now they replaced that with a USB.
Thank you so much for that info. I wouldn't mind that and I certainly don't need them all printed. As you can imagine where they printed ALL of the pictures they took on our 14 day cruise we had a lot of 8 x 10 pictures. What do you do with them all!!!??? Digital is good. Thanks again

Thanks for the review. We were on this sailing as well. We were on deck 8 forward and also had some soot on the balcony one morning, so beware going out there without checking or your clothes will be stained. It was a very greasy substance and very hard to remove from any surface. The deck was washed the same day however and and it never occurred again. Your glass was terrible! Never had that issue with ours and never heard a sound from outside the cabin and no smoke noted either. Great location!
I am surprised you had no knowledge of NCL's Wine Policy. Common knowledge here. Some people carry on several bottles or even cases. Just declare and pay the corkage upon boarding. I agree with you, the list of drinks needs some serious work. Much too generic and sparse. Of course you can ask for and get anything you want, but I would have probably ordered way more drinks with a good menu. The tastings were great fun and a good value.
Glad to see someone else found the "Bananas Foster" French toast. I had a side of it daily! The food in general we found to be very good, with Cagney's a standout.
We found no issue with the elevators. I believe once an "up" elevator arrives, it cancels the call on all the others, unless late comers or those who couldn't fit hit the button again, so no unnecessary stops unless someone is actively waiting. You seldom see anyone complain about too many elevators.:)
Our biggest difference in opinion would be in regard to "the least amount of friendly smiles and service ". We have sailed NCL several times as well as several times on RCCL, Princess, Celebrity, etc., and thought the service on this cruise was outstanding and the crew to be very engaging. Great service and smiles everywhere we went. The smoking was a minor annoyance.
We were able to purchase a USB Flash Drive of the pictures we purchased as we wanted some additional copies and sizes of the ones we bought. But, probably not available without a purchase. It is really cute! The case is a miniature NCL cruise ship!
I am very interested in hearing more about the USB Flash Drive of the pictures you purchased and how this works? We did a 14 day cruise out of South Hampton on the Celebrity Princess a few years ago and ended up buying this package they had available and ended up with beautiful pictures all 8 x 10 and a cd of them all. Anything like this on the Getaway?

I don't know if you absolutely need to, but we did, mostly because we had a preference about what night we wanted to go to the Illusionarium and what times we wanted to eat (we prefer a 7, 7:15, or 7:30 dinner). I will say that once we got onboard, we went to change one of our dinner reservations, and the only times available for a party of three were 6 or 9:15 (a party of two had more options). So, I'd say that if certain dining times are important to you, it makes sense to reserve ahead of time.
Do you know how much in advance that you can make reservations to shows and restaurants? We are not sailing until August 2nd. but checked earlier and the option is not there for us yet. Don't want to miss it as my son's birthday is while we are on board and there are 5 of us so want to make sure we get reservations made. Thanks

This is the Getaway deckplan showing your cabins. I drew to show what I am talking about. Like I said, they are still very close, but the doors are not across the hall from each other, and there is that other locked door into the studio area in between. Just food for thought, in case that matters to you. I hope this helps. :)
LrgPizza....THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! for taking the time out to do this....nothing like a visual to totally understand. Greatly appreciated!!!

I think you will be staring at the back wall of his cabin, because his entrance is on that other hallway, but they look like a close walk (down the hall, around the corner, back up his hall just 2 cabins.) I was just curious about how this works. Thanks! Have a great cruise.
Thank you for pointing this out to me. I will check into it further but in the meantime if anyone has been on Getaway or going may also be able to confirm.

i'm interested to know the cabin numbers, because in looking at the deck plans, the studio cabins have their own interior hallways. It might appear to be across the hall, but the doors might not be anywhere near each other. (i think).

We are travelling with our 19 year old son on the Getaway and our TA has us booked in a balcony and him across the hall in a studio. She did say that my name had to go on the studio where he was under 21. Other than that until I say this thread I never gave it a second thought.

have to agree that All Around Italy is he very Best. Ou family of four chose this way of seeing Italy at he cost of one of us at the excursions through the cruise line we were on at the time. We were treated like royalty and went along our days at our own leisure too rather than on a bus.

There isn't any formal nights on Getaway? I didn't know this. So we won't have to worry about taking suits or booking tux?

We are sailing in August. I don't see what the options are on the Getaway for beverage packages and wine packages. They say everyone has to have a package and I wa on deign what was included in the packages and if I could purchase the wine one while my husband had the be beverage one. Our daughter is not much of a drinker. When we were on Celebrity we purchased for her a package that include freshly squeezed juices and smoothies etc. Havn't seen such option on NCL. So not sure whether to do packages or not.

So do you get the drink package for all these drinks or would they not be included?
-
Would you need to pre book a cab from POM to MIA or do there be plenty there? We are party of 5? Thanks

Where to stay Pre Cruise South Beach/Miami
Hi,
We depart port on the NCL Getaway on August 2, 2014. We arrive mid day on July 31st. So we will be staying two nights pre-cruise. Joining my husband and I are our son and daughter along with our daughters boyfriend. They are in their early to mid twenties. We would like to stay in an area where we can walk everywhere and a place that can accommodate 5. Any one have any suggestions? I have spent nights searching out accommodations in the area but would really like some input. Thanks!

Hi, I too am enjoying your review. We have a family vacation planned on this ship in August 2014. My son will turn 19 the first sea day. He will be the youngest with us. We are Canadians and 19 is legal age. Not too worried about the drinking part but would he be allowed in say the piano bar or lounge with all of us? For example should we be in there for trivia or to enjoy entertainment. Thanks

Hi We are sailing on August 2nd. and our son has a studio. We are on the same floor with a balcony room and our daughter and her friend also on the same floor with an inside room. Do you mind telling me how old your sons are?
