The Norfolk Cruise Terminal is a Carnival Terminal. It was scheduled to be renovated in 23 so not sure how Carnival is using it. There is also very limited parking near the terminal.

I suspect that Vision will to the RC cruise terminal in NJ. It makes most sense. It is actually a little closer to Baltimore than Norfolk is.

I am on the 4th sailing and like you I wish they would make a decision to either cancel the remaining 2 cruises. The ship will be going into drydock in May so cancelling them may be their solution. I find it funny that Carnival announced their plan the very next day. I expected more from RC.

The Norfolk terminal is owned by the city, and has serviced many cruise lines over the years. Carnival is the only line to use it as a home port in recent years, but it isn’t strictly a “Carnival terminal.”

  2. https://www.wavy.com/news/local-news/norfolk/1-carnival-magic-guest-allegedly-attacks-another-with-bar-glass/

According to local news in Norfolk, someone attacked a fellow passenger with a bar glass in the theater.

They got confined to cabin for the rest of the cruise, and once the ship made it back to Norfolk, were passed off to police.

Always amazes me that people think doing crap like this won't end very badly for them.

Sounds a lot like a medical emergency. Most likely the case.

Given the time frame, I figured either:

    A) Helicopter med-evac, and police boats were making sure other traffic steered clear, or

    B) Passenger(s) got rowdy or some type of criminal behavior, and someone was getting handed off to NPD for a private cruise back to port.

Yes, I've been reading the updates. The city would be smart to buy some land adjacent to the cruise terminal for a covered parking structure. The break ins off site in downtown lots has been unfortunate. I hope Norfolk will support Carnival ships for years to come.

The city has majorly improved security at the parking site after the issues they had.

It does suck that you have to park offsite though. There’s really no adjacent land that’s undeveloped. They could always look into expanding an existing parking structure vertically.

The cruise terminal will be closed from this November until February of 2025 for “improvements,” but they haven’t announced what that will be. Just that they’ve agreed to these improvements as a condition of Carnival home porting year round.

This year, they have substantially improved their port operations. I live near the port and frequently watch the goings on. Rarely do the lines of either cars or people get too long. It used to be a total cluster-!*#%. Not sure what they changed, but it’s definitely better.

I usually have friends drop me off a few blocks from the terminal and walk if I’m cruising out of Norfolk.

And for non-locals, you can check with downtown hotels about parking deals. Some offer to let you park during the cruise, and are walking distance to the port. You have to pay, but it’s not any worse than the “official” lot.

I grew up in Tiredwater (spelt correctly) on N.O.B. I wish they had had cruise ships from Norfolk when I was a kid. The closest to it from Norfolk was the Little Creek - Kiptopeke Beach Ferry from Little Creek just north of the Amphibious Base that sailed to the Del-Mar-Va Peninsula arriving in Cape Charles before the Bay Bridge Tunnel was built. I sailed the Magic from Cape Canaveral last November and it was a good 8 day cruise.

    Pin on Virginia's Eastern Shore

I grew up here and have lived here most of my life. Cruising out of Norfolk is fabulous. Done it four times and going on the Magic next month. Starting in ‘25, we will be a year-round home port. (About time!)

  6. Carnival Magic departed from Norfolk a little while ago, and I just noticed she’s come to a stop in the River, near the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. She’s now surrounded by several police / military police boats.

Anybody on board know what’s going on?

  7. I've been on the Splendor twice. She's a GREAT ship!

Overall, Splendor is VERY similar to the Conquest-class ships of the fleet, but slightly larger. The two main differences are Splendor has a much larger Spa, with the thermal suites & thalassotherapy pool, as well as the sliding dome cover for the mid-ship pool. Otherwise, you'll find similar amenities & venues on the rest of the Conquest-class, as well as essentially the same layout.

As far as other older ships:

Fantasy class is much smaller, with fewer amenities and venues. But also nice in that they feel less crowded than the bigger, newer ships.

Spirit class is about halfway between Fantasy & Conquest as far as size. Doesn't have every feature of the newer, larger ships, but they're really great, classic cruise ships.

Dream class & newer will feature all the amenities you had on Splendor, plus more. But IMO, their newer ships pack too many people in compared to the public space. I think Splendor landed in a real sweet spot of ship design as far as size, what's offered on board, and how many people they cram in.

The Brand Ambassador said it last week, mentioned the Senior Food VP Richard had made the decision. I haven't seen an updated menu with the flat iron as yet but I do believe it's coming.

I mentioned in several of my surveys to Carnival last year that the striploin was a nasty piece of beef with its sinew, gristle and fat rendering it inedible. I'd like to think I played my part for the change.

    Bravo!

Do you know if it’s fleet wide now, or just on the ships with the new menu? I dug through Heald’s Facebook and didn’t see anything about it.

You are totally right about the striploin. Tough, chewy, with poor flavor. I wonder where in the cow it comes from.

I had it on the Horizon in 2021, and I couldn’t finish it. Tried it again on the Splendor in ‘22, hoping it was a fluke before. Again, it was so bad I didn’t finish it.

I’m going on the Magic in September, so I hope they offer it then! If not, I’ll just avoid the steak option in the MDR.

Carnival announced 2 days ago the horrible strip loin steak on the every day menu in the MDR has been replaced with the flat iron steak they used to serve. If not familiar, you may want to google the flat iron. Some beef lovers will find it interesting reading how this cut was "discovered". We're hoping the flat iron will also be served with the steak and eggs entrée at the seaday brunch.

Thank goodness! The strip loin was terrible. Love a good flat iron.

    Where did they announce this?

I approached the alchemy and my prospects seemed

I’m very curious to hear how busy the Alchemy Bar is throughout the week.

I’ll be boarding the Splendor next week.

The first few cruises I went on with an Alchemy Bar, it was usually pretty quiet. Became my favorite spot. But last Summer I was on the Horizon, and Alchemy was party central. I never spent any time there. I guess it had been discovered. But it being super busy sort of took away the charm of sitting and chatting with a friend or two and the bartenders, and having them mix you special drinks that felt personalized.

They've been in terminal on the second floor for exactly 1.5 hours...

I'll try to get an actual report and pass it along..

Wow! That’s unusual. I’ve sailed out of Norfolk 5 times, and always been through the terminal in 30-minutes time.

I do usually go for the earliest check in time.

I hope they get aboard soon! I drove past the ship on my way home from work today, and she’s a beauty!

    Likely a factor.

Norfolk cruise port also gets crazy long lines of vehicles for drop off because it’s right downtown. Local police to a great job of directing traffic, but there’s only so much you can do.

When I sail from Norfolk, I always get dropped off a few blocks away and hoof it. The terminal itself is fantastic, and they move the crowds through quickly.

Until this year, the last time I had cruised was 2014.  It was open earlier back then.

I’ve been on 14 cruises with Carnival, 13 of them before the pandemic.

All of them allowed me to check in weeks or months in advance, except the most recent one in August of 2021; and my upcoming cruise next month.

The extra two days (16 instead of 14) for Platinum/Diamond is a bonus they are giving because there currently is no “priority” line available.

My guess is that it won't return until after changes to the VIFP program are announced. I'm also not sure that Carnival will ever bring it back just like it was before where ALL Platinum, Diamonds, and those who pay for the privilege just show up whenever they want and have their cabins available when they board. According to John Heald they are considering adding other levels. He specifically mentioned a Diamond Plus, but it could even include Platinum Plus or even changes to the number of days required for each level. It could mean permanent changes to who gets priority boarding and what that looks like for the different levels.  Who knows?  All just guesses, but based on the fact that Carnival was working on changes well before Covid because the number of Platinums was growing fast.

If that’s the case, I wonder if current Platinums would be grandfathered in with the benefits we have now, or if we’d lose some.

  15. Can we all just appreciate how badly Carnival screwed up this announcement?

The wording was vague as to what “3 days” before meant, IE: does embarkation day count as day 1 or day 0 in your math.

This is the difference between being able to test on Thursday or not for your cruise Sunday cruise.

And amidst this confusion, John Heald has posted one answer, and people’s PVPs are sending them a different answer!

    What a mess!

With Carnival, your new status takes effect at the beginning of the cruise. However, during this interim time, the changes that IT made to allow Platinum & Diamonds to check in 2 days earlier can't handle your situation. Others in your position have called Carnival, explained their situation, and they did manually change their VIFP level in the system to trigger the new check-in date. It might be worth a call.

Well, this seems to have worked for a lot of people, based on the posts I've read.

Sadly, when I called I was told this was not possible under any circumstances. My travel agent also tried calling, to no avail.
